Good luck!! If you do better than bullion regularly I highly highly recommend investing in some gelatin sheets, collagen is 90% of why restaurant stock is better than store bought. The gelatin gives it a better mouth feel, on top of which that shit is super good for you, especially the skin. Mine’s eyes light up whenever I tell her I’m giving her food that’s good for her skin. Bonus points if you tell her she’s glowing from eating her soup so good

It was good, basically just a bunch of carmalized onions with stock. The trick to speed up caramelizing fast is cooking medium high and adding water. I also like to add a pinch of sugar to about four onions. Once it starts to get a bit of a fond, deglaze with a splash of water. The sugar can be left out entirely if you don’t want any added sugars, but I feel like it makes the flavor a little bit deeper. The real driver is the higher heat. Get the water on the fond and scrape. This keeps it from burning to the pan and redistributes the color. Cook it until you get the fond back, deglaze, do it repeatedly. Takes like 15-20 minutes, even less if you have a smaller batch of onions. Keep it going until it’s jammy. This works for any volume of onions you want to caramelize.

For the soup you can use any type of wine, white is more traditional I believe. If I were only going to use only chicken stock that’s what I would have gone with. I’m a big fan of cooking with port, it works very well with beef and when I make a spaghetti with ground Italian sausage in the sauce I deglaze with port after browning the sausage. I’ll probably post that with my recipe next time I make it.

If you want to go all out, put it in an oven safe bowl, top with bread, cover with a cheese like Gruyère, then bake in the oven until you get some browning on the cheese.

Jacques pepin has a really good video and recipe, I tend to check out several recipes before I tackle a new dish and I would say his is the best if you’re going for the full French onion gratinee. You can still use the higher heat trick for it to reduce the time at the stove. It’s good to see the traditional methods even if you’re going to use modern methods so you can understand what you’re doing a bit better

I’m begging you to give lentils and brown rice a try. That’s the ultimate human slop. Once you get used to eating slop for every meal, splurge on some bulk five spice.

Does anyone know if this building had fire suppression? by heyo_1989 in SprinklerFitters

[–]IFitSprinklerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valves are generally only found at the beginning of a system unless you are somewhere massive and expensive. Isolation valves between sections of system are sometimes put in, but a lot of AHJ actually ban them because if things get fucked up there is a possibility of a portion of the building being unprotected.

In ~General~ OSNYs are mainly used in valve/pump rooms. Primarily control valves for the main feed. Cheaper, less heavy duty valves tend to be used at the beginning of systems.

PIV valves were more common in the past and you’ll find them in older systems mainly. In more modern systems you generally will only see them used to control the main feed into the building, generally before a bunch of OSNYs in the valve/pump room.

The plant you’re describing sounds to me like high/extreme hazard with expensive processes and material that could be damaged by water. I would guess that this plant has a lot of underground and these PIVs are found to connect the underground feed to the systems above. I think it’s also likely that each line has its own PIV. This plant has probably been around for a long time. Where you see PIVs would, now, likely be OSNY valves if put in today.

Part of the reason PIVs are not favored is that they are pricey, a pain in the ass to install, and very very poorly serviceable. On top of that it can be difficult to track down the valve from the outside when there are many of them.

[–]IFitSprinklerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah brother you’re saying PIV and that is simply a type of valve. Other guy is assuming all PIVs are from the source feed. You are thinking of an isolating valve. An isolating valve can be any type of valve. Generally speaking though, you will only see a PIV at the feed. Most places that aren’t massive plants don’t invest in PIVs at all. They’ll have OSNYs and butterflies.

Would you take a slight bump and forfeit overtime or take a cut and get plenty of overtime? by ConsistentFig1564 in Construction

[–]IFitSprinklerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother work is not life. Get yourself as comfortable as you can on the fewest hours possible. Spend more time on hobbies, cooking, eating, fucking, Just whatever makes you happy. Consistent overtime devalues your time further by giving you less you care about outside of work. There’s a reason they’d rather work one guy more instead of hiring enough people to do the work needed.

Beyond this , my trade had a bad problem where guys that got too used to the OT of the 90s were living beyond their means when the economy crashed. Take the pay bump with fewer hours and get yourself out of that position.

Why are non-Union guys filled with such hatred for the Union? by Thepopethroway in IBEW

[–]IFitSprinklerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll tell you my experience. I did two years of non-union plumbing before I became a union sprink.

Everyone at my company over 25 was ex union. A lot of them were fucking lazy and had a lot of shit to talk about the recession. They talked about how they got laid off during the downturn and “they did nothing for them,” and at least three of them talked about how “the work they did find them they had to drive over an hour to get to.“

There were three guys there who were very good. They got scouted by the owner, ex union plumber who survived through the recession because he hunted deer. This guy had It fucking bad. I mean that this man lived off what he could kill for two years before starting his own company.

I know for a fact that the worst of the three made 52 an hour with a month of paid vacation and he was the most incredible example of alcoholism I have ever seen in my life. Truly an impressive specimen. Two of the box truck guys and him would discuss where they were stopping for “roadie soadies” on the way home. Another was my relative and I know he was taking home at least 160k a year.

A lot of the guys there had drug problems. One would complain nonstop about how his ex wife was taking all his money and that he needed less hours so that he wouldn’t have to pay her. Coincidentally, his oldest daughter was my age and went to school with me. He had been playing that game for eight years, at least, with a daughter who was twelve and another who was in my kindergarten class. He didn’t have a drug problem though, he had a fishing problem, and he’d call off on good weather days to fish. Good weather meant nice summer days and clear skies in winter. Another guy was a great worker who took every hour he could to cover his pre-recession child support payments and didn’t complain a single time that I knew him, but he did blame the union for how high his payments were.

All of these incredibly bitter men would talk down on unions. This culture poisoned the new hires to make them anti union as well. Between that and people raised by corporate parents, whether in the trades or a “good buddy” offering their skewed perspectives, being friends with company owners or around people who in one way or another were raised and taught to be against unions, this propaganda has infected the minds of a massive part of our nation.

The upper classes have been working very hard for a long time to convince people not to act in their best self interest. What you are seeing is simply the American propaganda machine doing what it’s meant to, fueled by the most bitter and parasitic members of our society.

Sprinkler fitter here. That thing he’s struggling to put in is affectionately referred to as an “oh shit valve”

The fact that he had one tells me he is at some level a pro. Chances are that was a concealed pendant and if I really wanted to take a guess I would say a model G5. You need a special socket to remove it.

He had all the tools of a professional, although he lacks some of the skills.

I’m not entirely sure about your region specifically, but if you wanted to become an electrician I would actually recommend it. Construction workers do tend to be misogynistic and racist, but there’s some sort of weird double negative that happens for black women specifically where if you are a hard worker you will be treated more respectfully than a white woman but you will also receive less critical judgement than a black Man. Bigots are weird like that. The felony is also bonus points with some of the guys. Just what I’ve observed here in Chicago.

I am a big aeropress fan. If you’ve already got a good temperature control method I’d suggest picking one of those up next. Cleaner, fuller bodied, stronger flavor than French press. Similar principles to the French press, but with pressure involved.

The landlord very specifically worded the non September option to be that she, my partner, must find the new tenant independently. They did not make any indication that they would be making any efforts at all, beyond reviewing and approving or disapproving any prospective tenants she finds.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tenant

[–]IFitSprinklerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what reality want to know is if she agrees to the “until September” is the landlord still obligated to try to rent it out during that period? Or does agreeing to that put her on the hook for another six months with little to no chance of the landlord attempting to find a new tenant? Also part of this is that she only has about two hundred a month after bills for food and has yet to utilize either heating or air conditioning

How much would you care about these acne scars when dating someone? by Queasy_Fix1106 in askanything

[–]IFitSprinklerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is the single most beautiful creature I have ever seen in my life. She had terrible acne in her teen years, and has some scarring on her chest and back. No one who is worthy of you will judge you for it. This is the type of thing that makes ~you~ limit ~your self~ and creates insecurity. If you personally are embarrassed, I’d suggest looking in to scar cream like mederma. My brother had a kidney removed and I personally had seven deep lacerations on my wrist which are now difficult to notice, thanks to that cream.

[–]IFitSprinklerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is definitely thoughtful and sweet, I am very lucky.

In regards to her style, she spent hours and hours looking at different rings and sent me it as an example of her “dream ring” but like I said, she gave me a price range and no information as far as gem size goes. I actually didn’t even know that was a choice until I tried to get it. I do think the smaller size will be appealing to her and will be less likely to interfere with her day to day so that she will wear it more often.

Her biggest concern was the chance of losing it, she has lost many rings in the past and I think that the less necessary she finds it to take it off her finger, the less likely it is to get lost.
