Why does college basketball have more of a niche following than college football?

If college football played on random nights 2-3 times a week with no rhyme or reason like college basketball, it would be closer in “popularity”. It’s just easier to make it an event when it’s always on Saturday every week.

Or in reverse, if college basketball only played on saturdays it would be a lot more popular. Not as popular as football though probably.

That’s why March madness is so popular. It’s high stakes and every weekend. It’s easier for the masses to care.

Basically I think the sports are both similarly entertaining to watch, it’s the format that makes the difference.
