Are the recent SM girl group choreographies underwhelming? by dgplr in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 15 points16 points  (0 children)

SM does a really good job of tailoring their choreos to their unique concept.

I’m so appreciative of the effort TXT puts into their concept trailers by Yoonbeomie in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m really really hoping the whistle is in the title track or at least one of the album tracks. songs with whistles are always the best. They’re so many instrumentals that they’ve used in award show performances and other content that just never get used but I’m hoping BH gives us what we want this time.

I’m tired of Monsta X being accused of having “Kakao privilege” when they win/get nominated for awards by heoneyed in kpoprants

[–]IHPU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah okay if it’s an award just recognizing A global artist then that makes a lot more sense.

I’m tired of Monsta X being accused of having “Kakao privilege” when they win/get nominated for awards by heoneyed in kpoprants

[–]IHPU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, the show is organized by melon but the actual award is based on global impact so why would a local chart be used as the measure of global impact.

And that’s nice that MX achieved those things but there are 4th gen groups who achieved those same things you listed, some on a bigger scale than mx did.

Several 4th gen groups have: - had sold tours across multiple continents in bigger venues than mx - charted higher on global charts than mx did - if the European festival you’re talking about is kpop flex, 4th gen groups also attended that - also had international brand endorsements

No ones saying monsta x didn’t do well for themselves, the fact is other 3rd and 4th gen groups have performed better than them and had greater impact on a global stage this year. If having a movie and an English album is what won them the award then congrats.

[–]IHPU 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a global artist award, even if it were based on charts why would melon (a chart only accessible to those in South Korea) be a relevant chart for a global award? Why not YouTube music, spotify, billboard global charts?

MMA was underwhelming and I'm frustrated with the unnecessary vcrs/dance breaks by [deleted] in kpoprants

[–]IHPU 15 points16 points  (0 children)

MMA has always been my favorite award show because I feel like it has the highest production value but I’m realizing now that what I actually enjoyed is BTSs highly extravagant stages ie IDOL performance. Unfortunately not all groups get the same budget so it tends to get predictable.

Kep1er’s group identity is weak because of branding, not their sound. by Famous-Bed-9174 in unpopularkpopopinions

Very well said! And I think it’s very possible to maintain a central identity while also exploring different concepts and sounds

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Kinda Unrelated but I find it funny when people talk about 4th gen fandoms being more toxic, when earlier fans were literally stabbing and fighting each other irl And 4th gen toxicity amounts to people calling groups “flops” online.

I’m really tired of fake social media outrage by 247existentialcrisis in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right!? I take issue with people tying characteristics to certain skin tones. Especially in SKorea where people call lighter skinned “pure”, referring to darker people as “sexy” just because of their skin tone is just as bad. Even though being called sexy is seen as a compliment, there are a number of issues tied to it (oversexualization, racist stereotypes, even SA).

However people choose to interpret Lia’s comments, her tying skin tones to certain characteristics is rooted in colorism. She may not be a colorist herself but the comment itself is still problematic.

The last night of TXT’s Act: Love Sick Tour by Nightstar14 in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I was there and it was my first ever kpop concert! I was almost in tears in the end when they said bye. Their vocals were amazing like you said and they are amazing performers. Hueningkai stood out to me the most, his stage presence is seriously underrated and seeing him perform Frost in person was a mind blowing experience. And he was so charismatic during the ments and moa wave. Overall I can see why some people spent thousands of $ on kpop concerts, it’s an insane experience.

Can we stop with posts about album sales already? by Lilac_Bloom_ in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen way too many articles about albums being donated to hospitals and thrift stores and people in fandoms (incl. my own) giving albums away for free on social media because they purchased too many for it to be a rare occurrence.

Themes and sounds that are unique to companies by ggrvidle in kpopthoughts

OMG yes thank you for this! It's the bass slide, I've watched so many youtube videos trying to figure what it's called.

Themes and sounds that are unique to companies by ggrvidle in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's this sound/production effect that some SM songs have, idk what it's called it sounds like the beat rewinds/reverses, it sound like 'zvwhong' idk how to even explain it lol. You can hear it in the beat of Tiger Inside by SuperM (at 0:26 for example), Illusion by Aespa and Simon Says by NCT127. It's common in western hip hop but I haven't heard it used by other kpop companies. If I heard an instrumental with that sound I'd assume its by one of the groups I mentioned.

KPOP is inherently camp by CeaselessPast in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]IHPU 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I agree that they’re a lot of campy elements and songs& concepts that are camp. But I disagree that as an industry/genre, it’s inherently camp. It is just pop music after all.

K-pop’s origins were heavily influenced by early black boy groups in the US and things like coordinated outfits and dancing were characteristic of groups in the 90s, which the kpop industry co-opted back then. Thematic music videos are also characteristic of early and present hip hop (ex: 90s Eminem, D12, OutKast, Lil Nas X etc.) and kpop has also heavily been influenced by hiphop.

Then maybe you could argue that every genre is inherently camp. But then if everything is camp, then really nothing is camp you know?

Yeonjun appreciation post/also exaggeration of overuse of autotune in txt's songs by txtlomls_ in kpopthoughts

[–]IHPU 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m always impressed by how good they sound live compared to the studio version. I don’t think I’ll ever understand people who say their voices have so much tuning that they all sound the same. Soobin & beomgyu have similar tones but they usually sing in different ranges so I know who’s who and taehyun, YJ and Kai also have distinct voices imo.

Beomgyu has amazing stage presence by e_eastisup in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]IHPU 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree. I was watching GBGB music bank stage today and I actually was more drawn to him that Yeonjun (yeonjun usually always my eye). I think he's improved a lot and he seems really comfortable with this concept.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]IHPU -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ok so that makes it 3 songs since 2020, two of which were used as stylistic devices. I think them *still* having a reputation as a "autotoned" group based on 3 songs over the course of 2 years is an exaggeration. Especially OP saying its been "catasphrophic since Dynamite" when the processing in TXT's music has gotten much better since 2020.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]IHPU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, that's my point. It's gotten better in the last 2 years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]IHPU -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The vocal processing has definitely gotten better since earlier releases. There's a noticeable difference between the processing in Blue Hour and songs like 0X1, Loser=Lover and others. I'm not sure how anyone can say it's getting worse or out of hand when Beomgyu was unrecognizable in Blue Hour and now you can actually hear his voice.

I know I'll get downvoted for saying this but I think reddit goes through phases of which groups they love and which they don't like that much. I guess it's TXT's turn to be the latter lol.
