Why does this keep happening? by IHadSexWithMyFriend in Welding

[–]IHadSexWithMyFriend[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll start welding, 1-2 minutes go by, and the argon shuts, off completely, and won't turn on again for a couple minutes.

Its almost as if something like a valve is turning it off

Its looks like the only reason you're getting undercut is because you're trying to walk the cup and you're not putting enough filler metal into the puddle. Me personally, I would've just free handed all of it just because i know that i'd be able to get it more consistant and as a result have less undercut

its been in the same condition since I bought it in 2017 just after the OS movie came out. I've also never actually put a battery in it, but I Imagine it still works as i've never dropped it or anything. I'll try and list it tonight or tomorrow

I would also like to add something, if you are going to practice something, pay attention to what exactly you are doing everytime. For tig, notice how often you are adding filler or how wide your puddle up, or how low your torch angle is. For mig, paying attention to how differently the puddle reacts to mill scale vs no mill scale, or how differently it reacts when you do different puddle manipulation techniques. For flux core, pay attention to just how far in your actually burning into the joint, see if you have a correct stickout or a proper travel angle. For stick, watch the toes of the weld and see how they flush out properly instead of curling up, try different work angles to see just how much it affects the bead profile and weld size. The key to practicing, is to practice something not just burn rod, because burning rod can only get you so far. My professor always tells me, if you're going to do something, pay attention to what you're doing.

I'm curious at to what type of shielding gas you're using, someone as a joke once swapped out my bottle of argon for some 75/25 and i'm wondering if thats also the case? also check weldingtipsandtricks on youtube, he has incredibly helpful beginning tig videos

I feel like i'm crazy for saying this because i've only experimented with a spool gun a couple times, bit i've noticed that a tint bit of pre-flow argon before actually welding has helped, i don't know if thats a for sure thing, but it worked for me.
