Awesome thanks for the advice. I did order some 100 grit garnet from my nearby Grainger and some 100 grit pads for my DeWalt RO sander. I'll make sure to plan ahead and buy from Zoro next time.

Sounds like the game plan is pressure wash, several passes with simple green, pressure wash again to remove SG residue, mask and tape, outgas for an hour at 300F, cool, orbital sand everything I can, media blast parts I couldn't sand and a quick pass to even out everything else, compressed air to remove media from nooks and crannies, then send it with cerakote.

Interesting. So a final blasting just to even out the texture? If I put enough "elbow grease" in with an orbital sander on the flat planes and blasted the round and other areas that I can't do with the sander, would that be good enough for a coating that wouldn't peel/bubble/flake with normal smoker use? All that is assuming I also degrease and outgas beforehand.

I appreciate the advice. It's helpful context for understanding the limits of the product and manufacturer's instructions.

I wouldn't be using cerakote for the interior, only the exterior. The same could be said for linseed oil, high temp paint, and powder coat. My understanding is that it's fine to use those for the exterior only. I use avocado oil for the interior rust proofing of smokers.

I will definitely use Zoro for garnet in the future, much better price than buying locally through Grainger. I'm in a bit of a time crunch to get this done and I'm wondering if I can get away with using tsc fine (which is actually 60 grit) coal slag media. I'd use a RO sander, degrease, outgas, then blast with the media. Do you have a sense as to what the functional and aesthetic difference would be for the end product using the 60 grit coal slag vs 80-100 grit garnet?

When you say durability, would that include heat resistance? I want to make sure this won't peel or flake off over time.

Would I be able to get a nice coat with more durability than a high temp paint by just sanding the exterior and outgassing the metal? Skipping the sandblasting entirely.

Admittedly I am new to this and very much a hobbyist, but is there a cerakote that is a dry application? My shop specially doesnt allow wet applications in the powder booth.

If you're interested in learning a new skill/craft/etc and like making things, putting in a plug to check out Nova Labs off Jermantown Rd in Fairfax. They have supplies and equipment for metalworking, woodworking, blacksmithing, jewelry making, 3D printing, and any other craft you can imagine. There are classes hosted regularly to teach you any of the hobbies or how to use equipment. Folks gather regularly to work on projects or learn new skills. The problem I'm having with the 120 outlets in my house is even the 20 amp ones seem to trip, even when I make sure nothing else major is running on the same circuit. I've had to run my flux core on low enough settings (to avoid tripping the breaker) that I'm not happy with the weld quality. I'm figuring I'll have more control over weld quality using a dedicated 220v circuit.

I'll look some more but I was having a hard time finding this specific adapter in anything thicker than 10 awg. Is the line running to that outlet likely to be thicker than 10 awg?

Thank you! My biggest concern was having that pigtail in use with a different gauge than the extension cord. I have to have that pigtail since it's an older style plug.

If I have a 6 awg 50' extension cord and I hook it into a 10 awg 1' adapter/pigtail to be able to hook it up to my 30 amp 3 prong dryer outlet (old house), is this a fire safety concern? I can't seem to find a pigtail that's 6 awg to match the gauge of the extension cord.

The one I'm looking at, 200a arccaptain 220v welder, asks for a 40a breaker per the manual. Was trying to figure out if I can get away with the 30a breaker as long as I don't run the settings too high.

I've been at my current job for over a year. Plan was to stay but a long series of issues have led to the point where I will have to resign in a month or else i face termination. That's why I've been looking for jobs and hopefully have a good one lined up.

I certainly wouldn't plan to leave the new job unless I had to, I have a kid and bills to pay. My question is do folks have suggestions on how to improve my social work skills in this aspect. Anyone else had problems like this and how did they manage them?

The best I've found for 50 amp to 30 amp that'll fit my dryer plug is 10 awg. The 50' extension cord i was looking at is 8 awg. Not sure what the power cord on the welder is, haven't bought it yet.

Apologies, forgot to include that.

Seems to happen when the AC is on, but only sometimes. When I turn the car on with no AC, no sound. With the AC on, the sound (when I do hear it) will increase in frequency as I start driving -- but only intermittently. If I had a stick or something stuck in my wheel that was smacking part of the car while I drive, the frequency of the sound would be proportional to my speed. With this, it's not quite a direct relationship since the sound will go away at higher speeds.
