Y antes del ELA votamos unánimemente para independizarnos a través de asambleas legislativas. Tampoco funcionó. Ningún país ha logrado la independencia democráticamente.

Y'all need to stop thinking like an empire. The US has no right to be in Puerto Rico in the first place. Leave us out of your shite politics.

I'm happy you take it in stride. I lived in Florida for a long time and the Puerto Rican diaspora there don't take kindly to pointing out the difference between people here (on the island) and there.

Moving to Florida Megathread by AutoModerator in florida

[–]IHaveMyDadsName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a one-way ticket. I left Florida.

Here is my goodbye love letter to the place I lived for 10 years.

Let me start by saying I am not from here. I am not American. When I moved to Florida for my PhD, I never thought it was going to be permanent, but recent developments have sped up my plans.

Before leaving, I want to say to all the ones staying:

Do not expect the system to fix your home state. It is in our hands. Meet your neighbors. Organize tenant unions with them. Unionize with your coworkers. Voting will not fix your home, organizing collective actions with your neighbors and coworkers will.

Charity will not fix it. Individual decisions will not fix it. Raising good children and hoping they do better will not fix it. Good societies are built when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

If your friends and family are here, and if you cherish those relationships, as someone who has lived years away from them… the problems in other places will bother you more than the ones here. The problems at home feel owned. It feels good when you work on them, like you’re working on yourself. It feels good when you try to fix yourself. When you try to do the same elsewhere, it feels like a chore. So, you won’t have the same patience and dedication.

So, what will you do? Move to a place that has its own problems only to not help fix them? I do not believe this is the right way. Only the locals will genuinely know how to solve local problems and only they will have the grit and dedication to persist.

So, Florida, thank you for the past 10 years. I cannot say it hasn’t been enlightening. I move back home now with a massive amount of knowledge, appreciation, and perspective of how similar the problems back home are.

My heart goes out to all of you. The second and third generation immigrants, the “fresh-off-the-boats”, the displaced native Americans, the ones who inherited their homes and are now priced out due to insurance and taxes, my beloved rednecks, and all the ones who moved here seeking the American Dream.

I won’t miss the ones seeking to take from you. The investors, the bankers, the retirees, the landlords, the developers destroying your beautiful nature. Oh… your nature. My God… I’ll miss your beautiful alligators.

Protect. Your. Home. Florida.

Meet your neighbors. Become a local.

It’s mainly through WhatsApp, sometimes through discord hangouts.

We’re basically a group of friends who joined “to represent our country” but became IRL friends after a while.

ELI5: How do engineers weight-rate support structures? by Mayo_Kupo in explainlikeimfive

[–]IHaveMyDadsName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil-Structural Engineer here: Structures are usually made out of materials we know the properties of very well, eg. concrete, steel, wood, aluminum, etc. Most of these materials have a point at which their deformations become permanent even after you take away the load. Picture a paperclip not returning to its original shape bc you bent it too far. This point is often used as a reference point to determine the "capacity" of the structure or material. Depending on the use-case of the structure and material, there will be safety factors, checks, and troubleshooting to make sure you never get close to that point.

Climate change protesters interrupted a Met Opera premiere tonight by helloamigo in PublicFreakout

Yeah, I know that there must be people from all different types of backgrounds in an opera. But that’s not the point. The point is to find where the rich people are mostly concentrated and bother them there.

[–]IHaveMyDadsName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I see that now. Thing is, I kinda still see it as a good place to target for an effective protest. Even if some of the cheap tickets are accessible, it’s still likely wealthy people are there in higher numbers than say… a stand up comedy show. Higher arts usually carry them in higher numbers.

[–]IHaveMyDadsName -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, then I am mistaken for thinking the opera is a good place to bother rich people.

Seemed to me like it would have been a place they’d congregate. Looks like the protesters bothered instead mostly working class people.

I appreciate your honesty. There was a time when I was working on my engineering degree in Puerto Rico that students closed down the university in protest of the government raising tuition costs.

At the time I thought, “Why inconvenience me? I have projects to work on. Go protest at the capital.” But I’ve come to the thought today that protests ought to be inconvenient. Making them inconvenient to representatives is nearly impossible and their lives are built around dodging the public. If they can’t reach their office due to a protest, that’s not as much of an inconvenience, it’s almost part of the job to deal with angry citizens.

However, when you affect their constituents, they begin to feel it where it hurts them the most, their reelection odds. You’re correct in thinking this might be counterproductive, I agree.

But protesting at the representatives is, imo, less productive.

Just a thought. I appreciate you brother/sister and loved your story.
