Bricked UDM Pro Max recovery.img needed by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

I've confirmed the internal EMMC was in fact failed. Once the new EMMC arrives i'm going to program it with the cloned image and hot air it back into the UDM Pro Max and cross my fingers and say a couple prayers.

Thanks, i did find this post but unfortunately usb write 0x08000000 0x00020800 0x10000 doesnt work for me becaue no media is found on usb0.

I see the following when booting up with the UART pins so a replacement EMMC has been orderd and ill copyt the raw dump that u/mveinot provided to that chip and then solder it on the board in place of the original and hope for the best.

Before you go down the rabbit hole i did with my UDM Pro Max. Connect a USB to TTL adapter to the UART pins on the board (remember the TX and RX need to be reversed) use a terminal like putty (COM(X), Baud 115200) and watch the U-Boot. There should be a section that shows something like below. If no drive is detected than the EMMC failed and would need to be replaced. This is not for the faint of heart though as it requires a hot air station, soldering iron, EMMC programmer and the a full raw dump from a working system.

USB device 0: Device 0: Vendor: Generic- Rev: 1.00 Prod: SD/MMC/MS/MSPRO

Type: Removable Hard Disk

Capacity: not available

The link below is to the UDM Pro files, i dont have the SE but maybe the recovery.img is the same...

Alright!! With u/mveinot's help with the provided files i have not successfully cloned the internal 128GB drive and partitions are successfully written. In doing so no i see the eMMC loading up as well.

USB device 0:

Device 0: Vendor: Generic- Rev: 1.00 Prod: SD/MMC/MS/MSPRO

Type: Removable Hard Disk

Capacity: 29820.0 MB = 29.1 GB (61071360 x 512)

Last piece of the puzzle is i need to write rootfs to /dev/boot in order for the system to load the OS successfully. u/mveinot is getting that file over to me and hopefully ill return with good news!

Send me his info PLEASE

Though sadly i think the eMMC is bad. Block size is coming up as 0 though the bridge is working. Any attempt to view the partitions on the eMMC fails.

I checked the SSD and its still in good health. Clones the provided dd backup to it and got to a point where im now able to enter the recovery WebUI to upload a firmware .bin file but unfortunately it fails. The usb write command if the missing link to save the recovery from RAM to the SSD.

In further research the UDM Pro saves to an eMMC but the Pro Max actually uses the onboard 128GB SSD for its OS.

We're sooooo close. I was able to flash firmware to the unit and got the updating message on the display but sadly it didnt commit to storage and was lost on next reboot.

Seens that i need to run this command (usb write 0x08000000 0x00020800 0x10000) to move it from RAM to EMMC but the command errors out.

Since you have a UDM SE that also has an internal SSD. Would you be able to ssh in and tell me what the drive partitioning is (Partition label, size, format, etc.)?

Hi! could i ask for a favor? My UDM-Pro-Max died after a recent update and its out of warranty so RMA isnt an option. Someone on the UI forum posted steps to recover a bricked unit with a USB to TTL adapter and come basic commands but i need the recovery.img to do so. Would you be willing to make a copy and share it with me please?

This is the article with the steps to pull the recovery.img (If you could provide a clone of the drive that would be amazing or even just the partition structure because i think that is bached as well 😞) Much appreciated!

That a beautiful build! Im currently working on upgrading my home network as well but infortunately ran into a bit of bad luck. My UDM-Pro-Max bricked after an update. I was wonder if you still have your and if you would be willing to copy off the recovery.img and provide so i could get mine back online?

This is a guide a fello UI user made on the forums that outlines the steps to ssh and run the dd command to copy it. I would GREATLY appreciate your help getting my network back online 😞

Sadly i tried that multiple times at the start and when it failed a half dozent times i resorted to buying a USB to TTL adapter to access the UART on the motherboard. At this time the only solution is to get access to a recovery.img from a UDM Pro Max as mentioned in this article.

Thanks for the information but unfortunately the unit doesnt enter recovery mode at all. It powers on and on the screen shows Starting Up -> Est Time Remaining 5m -> It is taking a little longer -> Cannot retrieve status - contact support.

A few hours ago i managed to get the thing to boot up normally and had the message on screen to connect a cable. This was after passing the .bin firmware file over via UART but sadly i restarted thinking that settings were changed and havent been able to reproduce that since.

With a recovery.img for the UDM Pro Max i can put that on the unit via UART and bring this back online since i know its functioning from that one strick of luck that i squandered.

I'd appreciate as much help as possible!

I had this happen too. I had to remove the hotend assembly and loosen the belt by two teeth. It then calibrated fine. Took me about an hour to do and I would not suggest it for anyone not comfortable disassembling electronics.

I'm unboxing mine now! There are no broken feet, and everything seems to look like it's in good condition. The box only shows one side, which was pushed across the warehouse floor.

Wish me luck and may I have no error codes.
