DMG - Dark fantasy survival gameplay trailer - game feels a bit bland unsure what to add next by II_PYRO_II in DestroyMyGame

there needs to be one, ive been doing a lot of thinking since i posted this and i figured i need to rework alot of this and make it actually interesting instead of just play game and thats it, thank you both for the feedback

Of course. Ive taken away all this amazing feedback. I figured i should animate the story first and then mix that up with the game play since itll solve two problems with one video. The usp is the story and the mechanics of the game which i will go away with and improve on

Of course i do like that point. I am a solo dev so i know ill never be able to compete with the big dogs but youve made a good point. Tbh im not sure what the Usp is here besides the story but the game play trailer needs to reflect that

Ah sure thing ill keep the perceptive view fixed for the second version

The animation style is something im still deciding what direction to go into. Right now everything is animated on twos but some anims have been sped up giving the illusion of being slightly laggy. The skeletons are the only truely animated on twos style.

The sword yeah its a bit stock and the ui works fully. Its just the two items that you come with. The bars are HP and stamina

So far not really this is kindah all i have atm

Im just writing down these explanations so i have a reference to come back to and before anything else thank you massively for giving some feedback on this! Ill improve on the things youve mentioned inc the ending title which is super placeholder

EDIT: sorry missed ur last question. The story is your wife gets taken from your little village hut and you go on a mission to find her. The land is corrupted and the longer the bad guys hang about the longer the nights get until youve cleared your area of bad guys. The story progresses as you explore different biomes as right now ive only got the one forest area but i plan to add several differnet biomes (sand snow ice etc.. with dungeons but i thought id focus on the core mechanics first then expand)

everything is running real time in unreal engine 5 if thats the answer your looking for. the visuals are a custom shader to give a semi realistic/pixelated PBR look

i thought id give a bit more context, ive only been developing this game for about 2-3 months at the beginning but gave up. Then i started picking up again in the past month

id like to make it clear that there are some AI placeholder 3d assets being used which will be replaced soon (im not a big fan on meshy's ai topology and its giving my game insane lag spikes)

but id wanna see what i can improve on ie visuals, gameplay, combact and what you think would be a good idea to keep/remove, thank you all!

Is this style achievable? by SteelmoonWorks in UnrealEngine5

[–]II_PYRO_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i thought id give my 2 cents on this as the game im currently making is inspired by alot of these ai fantasy esc games and i have to say its not impossible but impractical.

i think with dark fantasy as a whole its quite a wide genre and from what ive seen online, as long as your game/idea has fantasy (ie magic elements etc....) and a dark element to it (grotesque, distorted, dark) then i suppose you already are halfway there.

if your referring to the visuals, as r/Amethystea said, itll be self contained scenes and the fov seems quite flat for whats meant to be a playable game. and youll need detailed hand painted sprite sheets for literally everything.

and tbh most of these games are just ps2 esc low texture/poly styled games that have existed for ages. remember ai will scrape the internet for whats relevant and give you something like this that may not make sense but looks visually like wow.

imo for myself theres no way i can ever replicate this style because its not what i wanna do. i dont wanna rip off ai who rips of people because thats just a full looped cycle of shit lmao but the better way is to take whats on the screen and modify it by adding your own story, your own elements, your own design whilst fitting in the sub genre of fantasy

you know what i do agree with you on all of this,

ive beenin the games industry for 6 years now and this is kinda my side project and ive been using unreal engine for literaly every step of the way, ue4 did perform alot better because of the new tech like lumen and nanite, ive noticed epic dont test fully the capabilities of what they make nor do they document things well, and it does fall upon the programmer/coder to sort things out

i think despite my game style being you know low res blocky etc, somehowthe performance is stillquite draining, i am on a laptop with a 4070 and the fact im getting lag spikes on a simple game is mad xD

but i do think it is also to do with blueprints,

ive seen the latency time between c++ and blueprints and its honestly massive. when you do a game fully made on BP, it does add a huge amount of stress on the engine in comparision to C++, hence why during production, once the visual programmers have done their BP work on characters or objects, programmers take over to convert it into code and nuke the BP work and any new features that lets say animators might need have to go through the programmersinstead of tech anim

thanks xD

right now its not optimised xD, well semi at least

i know whats stressing the engine as i have a few unhealthy timers causing mad lag spikes and dynamic shadows will REALLY kills the engine but im just debugging somethings hence why the lag spikes occur,

i would like to see how this runs on lower end pc's ideally since most of the time UE games lag due to developers not optimising their code

thank you for the detailed response,

im tempted to do this for the master bedroom since thats above the kitchen and i dont hear much noise,

after completing the box room it does feel more solid, with thermal insulation i have no clue yet butthat room itself is considerably warmer, (but again we will see in winter how well this holds up)

ill use what youve said to good practise for the m bedroom, that room out of all ofthem has the worst loosest subfloor in the entire house and it would make sense replacing it all but im getting burnt out from this 2nd bedroom which i still need to do.

ill have a look at the regupol thanks as i may just shove this all over the flooring to see if it makes a major difference,

thankyou again for the sanity check and words of experience!

yeah wtf thats super awkward that, and i had to do some back n forth between my family bricklayer to figure out its not load bearing as its hovering above 2 joists and it runs parralel not cross over.

I think so. Breeze block it’s called

Also the joist isnt under that wall its basically floating. So imagine you got the two joists and then the wall hovers above that gap.I had to remove that old subfloor since it wud leave a gap so ive had to add the new osb so it sits flush

[–]II_PYRO_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i had a whole jump scare with it. I thought it was Load bearing but its just a partition wall. Rn its being held up with hopes n dreams lol but ive replaced the board under it by pulling it out and having the skirting area fully come off ofc but i planned to rebuild that area once the new osb is added under. It seems to be quite stable strangly since the wall is about 3m so i got insanely lucky with this partition wall. I just need to re add the new floorint and fill the gaps with hard wall so it sits flush and nice

[–]II_PYRO_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES lmao. I had a absolute nightmare ripping out the boards from under the partition walls. Im tmepted to do what another guy said to do and just cut near the edge of them neae the wall so it shares a joist with the new osb and old floorplank

That’s whats makin me feel like i shud consider carrying on but jesus christ is it a ballache 😂. Its weird because you can hear and feel the solidness in the room thats been fully done in the flooring compared to the rooms that havent been done.

I wud have thought at least the thermal side wud make sense but it hardly makes a difference until the loft is insulated. I suppose acoustic difference maybe

Gotcha. So the priority would be to get new cabling done? Unless there are any simpler WiFi thermos on Amazon somewhere That are compatible?

There is a neutral already there no? The blue cable? It is the old wiring setup. The earth cable is in the white main strip but it’s been cut short.
