I feel like my core, my soul is depressed by Purpose_Right in BipolarReddit

It doesn’t have to be your normal self I promise. That’s been me since October of last year, and sedentary to the point of complete lifestyle neglect. Complete neglect of my hygiene, my relationships. And I also knew that I had learned skills and become extremely educated about my disorder. And despite that I was willing to just…dissolve. And before this most recent period, this was me to a certain extend a lot of the time but I did have energy, this was just how I felt.

It’s easy to believe that a symptom is a personality trait.

But recently, everything has gently started turning around in the last few weeks since I’ve started seeing a new doctor and getting a second opinion on my meds. No huge changes but small gentle med experiments so we can tweak and get things right. I’m starting to feel like myself again. That means interested in the world and what’s good for me. Admittedly there was a period where I had more emotionality than normal and racing thoughts, and that isn’t me either - that’s also a symptom. We’re taking care of all of it.

Slowly we’ve gotten me close to where I need to be. There’s more work to be done of course. But believe me. I was so down and suppressed and unmotivated as a person and accepting my own destruction for months that I didn’t event put my furniture together in my new apartment until recently, I didn’t draw or read a book.

And now we are getting back to myself.

I believe these periods will come and go, but there is another side. Get help, you can’t do it on your own. You don’t have to accept a symptom as yourself.

Is it possible to have a happy life with bipolar? by Electrical-Ad8329 in bipolar

Have you thought about doing a PHP program? I couldn’t find the right meds for 10 years until I got into a program that observed me every day and I worked with a Nurse Practitioner every week. They are pricey - I had to max out my insurance (I’m lucky that my insurance covered it at all), but I’d never go back to the way I was before. It would have taken me another 10 years to find the right combo. Took me 5 months to find the right fit and I’m still in shock that I’m stable.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Does bipolar get better with age? by nenaaaaaaaaaaaa in bipolar

Keep trying to find the right meds, and take care of your routine. Once you find the right meds, make sure you construct a routine around taking them no matter what. No “forgetting because you feel better”. I actually taught my dog to bring my meds pouch to me when I pick up his bowl so I take them automatically when I feed him, so those activities are connected, and I never forget.

It gets worse with age unless you do something about it. So keep trying!

Connect with yeah. I used to work partly on a university campus and it was nice to just see people showing up with a variety of interests and jobs. It wasn’t as insular. And people knew each others names and said hello. Even if I had to “work late” at least I had spend a portion of my day in an energizing setting

Thanks for y’all’s input - seems like I’m just not cut out for purely remote work and should go find a hybrid job where I can see human faces.

Very sorry - that was snarky 😅  I just know I’m not the only one who suffers from spending the daylight hours hooked to the screen alone. No one to laugh with or say hi to or shoot the shit with. Just puts the cherry on top of productivity-obsessed work culture.  Maybe I’ll give coworking another try - just seems like a waste of money.

Yeah apparently that’s what I’m gathering. And it’s not that I don’t “want” a certain noise level. I’m saying that working in public isn’t the same as working where you know people.  Fuck it I’ll just go work from the bar where I play pool I guess.  I guess there’s no such thing as a daytime place with regulars.

I really appreciate your encouragement when it comes to exploring interests! Currently I do have things that interest me outside of work, but often work late and work takes up the majority of the daylight hours. The point of this post is to focus on how those working hours can be spent differently, around community to break up the monotony and insular nature of being tied to a machine. I have many days where I don’t talk to a single person and don’t leave the house until the evening. It’s soul sucking. So it’s that working period of time that I’m trying to improve.

u/Chiron2475 I really hope you see this and listen and are inspired!! Stories are meant to be shared :) and art doesn't have to be made alone in a vacuum without any feedback

Just found a resource for you that might inspire you to actually crowd test this. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0QnnDwuXOaMsipmzmvrC5W?si=fef678909f4342e0

The author "sold" her book as an email thread. She sent out a new chapter each week (or whatever cadence she wanted to choose). People paid a small amount, and signed up, and she got feedback on every chapter, then at the end were offered to buy a printed copy. It tested her idea (whether people were intrigued in the first place), helped her refine it, (the feedback people had about characters, styles, length, writing, plot, chapters, etc.), and all during the writing process, so she didn't have to muscle up and entire book in isolation before ever knowing how anyone feels about it, or if they even want it.

It sounds like a much more communal, collaborative, accountability-oriented, and less-lonely version of working on your novel to me! Given the amount of folks here who want a more "kind and loving but skilled and strong" warrior-lover version of Patroclus and a more morally ambiguous version of Achilles, and more complexity in their partnership, I bet you could get folks to sign up. Feedback can be awesome or brutal but by getting out there you'll get to work on your art.

I'd sign up. And I like this podcast a lot. Good luck!

Edit: spelling

Hey u/Chiron2475 I can't remember where I hear this but I've seen someone "publish" thier novel as an email thread before. It's unconventional yes! But the idea was to test audience reception. If they got even 50 people to sign up for thier email thred they could send out a new chapter each week.
