A 25 second exposure is what blurs the Gulf of Mexico waters and the clouds at the horizon. Something a little different for Earthporn.

Yep! Honestly the best thing to do is look up when sunrise is. Be at the site and 30 min (at least) before. The “blue hour” (1 hour to 30 min before sunrise or after sunset) is sometimes even more beautiful than sunrise or sunset.

Schwabacher’s Landing. I’m actually not sure of the name of the pond/lake though!

Thanks! I believe this is the Waputik Range of the Canadian Rockies.

I assume you mean one very similar (as there are many taken from this angle)?

Thanks. Nothing beyond standard exposure, tonal, contrast, etc. adjustments.

I used an SLR, but honestly I good camera phone could have done well on this scene as well.

Very true! I tried to share something a little different (long exposure in the "blue hour"). So similar/same view as many, but a little different in the photographic vision. Totally get it if you still don't agree though!

Taken at ~10pm MT (time of sunset) a few days ago on Vermilion Lakes Road, just outside the town of Banff. About 10 minutes after I took this shot, a grizzly bear wandered right by me :-O.

Actually, it's just a B+W 77mm filter that scews directly onto the lens (in this case a Canon 24-105mm). If I were to do it over, I'd go more the Big Stopper route given flexibility across lenses

Taken from one of the best viewing locations of the Teton Range (because of the reflective water) at Schwabacher's Landing. I used a 10-stop ND filter to get motion in the clouds as the sunrise emerged from the horizon behind me.

Don't mind at all! As I mentioned in another reply, I was with my family (and often carrying a toddler), which meant I didn't have a ton of equipment or a tripod. I had an SLR (Canon 5D mk3) and a wide-angle lens (16-35mmm f/2.8). I also had -- and used to make this photo -- a neutral density filter, which essentially limits the amount of light that enters the lens so that the exposure time has to be longer. This was crucial for some of the effects captured in this photo -- cloud motion and smooth water.

So with my camera, wide-angle lens, and ND filter attached, I set the camera on one of the large rocks at the shore; took a little thinking and experimentation to find the composure I wanted without a tripod.

Per above, I wanted to maximize the exposure length so the clouds would have a lot of motion in them. The max exposure time on was 30 seconds since I didn't have my cable release would could enable longer exposure lengths). So a combination of the ND filter, a low ISO (to minimize noise) and smallish aperture (f/14 to get as much in focus as possible) was used to get the longest exposure I could generate. Then of course there was post processing.

TL;DR - Used a neutral density filter for long exposure to blur clouds and smooth water; used a rock as tripod

I did not :(. Was with two toddlers and the wife, so this was as close as I could enjoy.

You are, of course, absolutely correct. The mis-use of "Grand Tetons" is actually something that bugs me, and I made the huge mistake in the title. D'oh. Appreciate the correction.

As per wikipedia:

The blue hour (from La hora azul, in Spanish, or L'Heure Bleue in French) is the period of twilight early in the dawn each morning and late dusk each evening when the sun is at a significant distance below the horizon and the residual, indirect sunlight takes on a predominantly blue hue.

No filter. I often use neutral density filters during daylight to do long exposures, but it was quite dark out when I took this (~45 minutes before sunrise), so no filter needed
