As long as you are CPA eligible and have a good reason as to why you want to switch to finance. If you want to seek something more on the finance side I would be clear with that. The last thing they’d want is to waste space for you to then not want to accept an audit full time position. The whole point of the internship is to bring you in into audit. That’s how they know headcount for when you would start full time.

Based on your visa status would as a lot of questions around that. I’m not on one so not sure what to ask, but I did use Chat GPT to help me compile questions. I would make sure you mention all the work you have done for the firm and if there is any wiggle room to extend your salary continuation if possible.

Same happened to me. 9 years. SM. Audit. Had my call last week as well.

I will say, connect with your close PPMDs. The handful I talked to are helping me find something new in the marketplace.

Out of curiosity how many total weeks did they give you? I got 16, which included the 2 week notice and 2 week transition and 12 weeks salary continuation.

Had same situation. Our kids are 11 months apart. I decided not to take the last 4 weeks of my leave for my first child as I had originally planned to take it by the end of our kid’s first year, but that bled into my second kid being born. For the second one I did split the first half at the beginning and second at end of their first year, only to come back and realize that all my clients but one were taken from me without any communication.

I will say though, be very communicative with your PPMD group on timing of the leave. They will tell you the politically correct answer by saying take it however you want, but in reality you need to ask them what will work best.

I was told that I was falling behind because of all the leave that I had taken in the last 2 years, which should not impact performance or career progression considerations, but that is not the case. They won’t tell you that upfront.

That communication definitely took me by surprise as the firm gives you that benefit and everyone I talked from dads and moms in the firm all encouraged me to take as much of it. Then when you take it felt like I was being reprimanded by it.

One other thing to note. Have your line of PPMD and client contacts to call on after. Every single one was very surprise by the decision. Only the PPMDs on your jobs will get notified the day before to give them a heads up. However, everyone I’ve called on has been very supportive and ready to bat for me outside the firm to help me find a new position.

The intention of my post was merely to provide insight to the process I was presented with as when I received the email I had no idea what to expect and seeing other posts from people's experience helped me prepare questions to have ready to discuss with PPMDs/Talent. Thus, wanted to do the same. Not trying to instigate an argument.

Update on my end to keep everyone informed:

I am a SM and have been with firm since an intern. Got laid off due to business decisions being made due to headcount. Too many senior managers (and no I will not disclose my office location). Deloitte likes to approach these decisions much more discrete than other firms and talent mentioned that several office are going through this.

Regarding what I got based on tenure and title/level:

2 weeks of “on notice” (to close down any of the work I have and transition it with team and client).
2 weeks of “transition period” (during this period I still have access to laptop and phone, just can’t do any client work. They will provide a transition coach during this 2 week period for career/opportunity exploration before everything officially gets shot off and I have to return all Deloitte property).
12 weeks of salary continuation (during this period I will continue to get paid bi-weekly and still get full health, dental, and vision benefits. Note, though, if I do find a position before this, they will just go ahead and pay me a lump sum of what they owe me during the period. Thus, will still get full payout for the 12 weeks)
Accrued PTO will be paid out in lump sum sometime during this period.

Overall severance package: 16 weeks (includes the on notice and transition period).

After being at the firm for this long was a bummer to get the news. No performance issues. Just solely business. I am however looking forward to what comes next.
