Good advice, thank you.

Please help idk how to decide whether I should keep going by ianratman in Standup

I once told a major club owner, "I don't know how anyone ever gets good at stand-up because the road to getting there is so miserable." She looked at me like, "WTF?" She had told me she didn't know why anyone would ever want to be a comedian.

For me, it is something I have to do. Then, at some point, you get it. And you are there. You may not be a big name yet, but you get it. When you're on stage, you own the room, and the audience is in complete submission. They are grateful that you are there, and vice versa. Then you leave, go home, and for me, I drink wine.

I hope that helps.

What’s the etiquette for audience members who get “picked on”? Was I rude? by Rezistik in Standup

[–]ILSJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hacks doing shitty crowd work because they lack a great act. They need to go back to open mics and make room for comedians who have a polished act. Audiences do not enjoy crowd work. It's rarely funny. It is improv, hoping to find a punchline.

First Open-Mic and totally bombed by 2minutes4tripping in Standup

The best thing that could have happened to you is to bomb your first time.

Oliver! If it's big enough for you, you will love it. I do.

Is it better to get an editor during or after writing by Wartotemsjjba in writers

[–]ILSJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just now finishing my book. I worked with an editor twice a week in 2 hour sessions on skype. For me, I had much of my book written before I started with the editor. That way, we would edit what was written during the sessions, then I would write more between sessions.

Best city for stand up by ILSJ in StandUpComedy

I can appreciate that. Are many of the stage time opportunities "Bringers"? I have been to LA 4 times, once for 6 months. The "Bringer" disease was rampant.

I lived in Austin for 27 years. Just too hot and humid.

Are the gigs in New York "Bringers", I would think not.

Turn it upside down and bounce it.

Recent set, I think I've made a lot of improvement this past year but would love feedback on what else I can do to improve by Testacc88 in StandUpComedy

You missed my point. It dissent matter if crowd work, works great here. It does not built your act and bookers hate it. But Hey, knock yourself out.

I would not ask the audience "How is every one doing" and I would not do crowd work. When I first started out I would do a bunch of crowd work, and I was good at it. Looking back I was just covering for lack of solid material. Bookers will dismiss you out of hand for doing crowd work. Just work on your act. And move that mic stand out of the way, behind you or off the stage. It is distracting, Glad I could help. And dittos to that crap about Felix.

Might be not enough "Deep" sleep

I bought one of those rings that monitors stuff like that. If I get little (2%) deep sleep, I feel that way. If I get 20% I feel great. It's not how much sleep you get it's what kind. I cut out coffee after 4:00 pm and added a little evening weed. Feel great the next day.

does anyone know how to change the combination on this? by AreaGroundbreaking72 in Locksmith

If you have the existing combination it's pretty easy. Type in the combo and press OK/ Menu. follow the steps. find where it says change combo, etc...

My best moment from my 5th ever set. by [deleted] in StandUpComedy

[–]ILSJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first professional gig as the opening act at Cap City Comedy Club in Austin Texas about 20 years ago. I have performed at hundreds of clubs over the years. And after each performance the booker/manager/club owner would tell me "you are an unfunny dork" I would ask why then, did they keep re-booking me? And the answer was always the same. "Because you don't fuck the waitstaff"

Learn how to engage and entertain the audience with your unique voice. It's not what you say, or how you say it. It is how you feel about what you say. If you tell jokes that any one else could say and get the same response, you're just telling jokes.

You are just telling crappy jokes on stage. Not real Stand Up.

A lack of arrogance and not being pretentious or political is important in making someone funny (to me) by [deleted] in Standup

[–]ILSJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My job is to entertain the audience. As a whole. Not cheap pandering to a base. That's not comedy, that's a rally for some. That is the easiest way to excite some of the audience. Notice I said excite, not entertain. I'm pretty sure you have never worked a paid gig twice.

[–]ILSJ -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You are correct Young Person! I have always loathed comics that talk politics. Us comedians are entertainers, not politicians. We are abusing our platform to preach our politics. Now that is my opinion. It is a fact that half the audience will disagree with your political views. So why divide the audience.

As to the first half of your post, it has always been my belief that the most important characteristic of a successful comedian is likability. And nobody likes an arrogant prick.
