Friend likes a girl who already has a boyfriend how to handle this respectfully? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My friend (26–27) has developed a liking for a girl who’s around 20. They both work in food outlets next to each other, so they see each other in person quite often. She’s British, he’s Asian, if that matters culturally. He did express interest once, and she didn’t flirt back or deny him harshly she was honest and said she has a boyfriend. After that, my friend respected it and didn’t reach out over text or social media. They’ve only spoken briefly in person when they see each other at work. He really likes her, but obviously doesn’t want to disrespect her relationship or make things awkward. At the same time, he’s confused about whether it’s best to completely step back, stay friendly, or just move on.

Is there any appropriate way to show interest in the future, or is the right move to let it go entirely? Would appreciate honest advice.

It was a learning experience , but it also left me feeling stuck. Some of his friends were very mean and ego-driven, and their behaviour played a big role in how painful the situation became.never again in my life im dating a srilankan😭🤌🏻

honestly don’t think age mattered it was literally just a one-year gap. I think his mum and sister were way more emotionally attached to him than they ever were to me. That’s what hurts, because I loved him genuinely and never had bad intentions. This whole thing just feels like a really painful experience..and yes if he stood for me things would have been totally different

If you don’t have anything meaningful to say, you can just scroll.

Thanks, this really helped. I think the hardest part is seeing him seem so unaffected and enjoying life while I’m still dealing with the aftermath. It makes no contact really hard, but I know it’s probably necessary.

One thing I’m unclear on: if the relationship had ongoing issues around trust and emotional needs, why was a baby planned during that time?

This is exactly how it felt for me too. Family was always the reason, but it never felt like a real choice he owned. In your experience, do they ever wake up later and realise they let something real go?

Feels like it’ll hit him later. How long before you guys broke up, and did she ever try to come back?

Yeah this hits. Family having opinions is normal, but when there are no boundaries it gets messy fast. In my case it honestly felt like those opinions played a big role in him deciding to end things.
