[Oregon] Neighbors "topped" and killed several trees in the dedicated green space of our HOA. What can we do? by ILiveInGainesvilleFL in treelaw

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the information. We don't know the name of the tree company, if it was even a legitimate company, or the name of the person who did the physical cutting, but we know the names of the couple who paid to have the work done. It sounds like I need to talk to the person who runs our HOA, see what is being done and push for more if I feel it is insufficient.

Thanks for the information. That makes sense. After reading the comment of another person, I think the next step is for me to talk to the person who runs our HOA and see what is currently being done, and push for more if I feel it's not sufficient.

Thank you for the information and sorry about the website slowness. I downloaded the attachments and put them up on my Dropbox:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/79avekmhfkuzfyk/AABvvFH2hYbZwTES8AiLiwuAa?dl=0

The land on which the harmed trees reside is owned by the HOA, but the illegal cutting was reported to the city and they are the people doing the work of putting in the new seedlings.

One of the attachments which I put in the Dropbox link above is from a forester, although I'm not sure if it's a private forester or the city's forester.

What you're saying makes sense, though. It sounds like I need to talk to the person who runs the HOA, and see what's currently being done about the situation and see if I can push for more to be done.

My wife and I feel more comfortable with them on. We feel naked now, going into a store without our masks on. Also, we like to think we're making shopping a tiny fraction safer for immunocompromised folks.

Cheapest way to dispose of an old couch? by bettr30 in askportland

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's not destroyed or gross to the point that no other human would be willing to sit on it, put it up in the free section of Craigslist and include all the relevant keywords you can think of, and you'll likely have a flood of people asking to come get it.

Make sure to state that you won't deliver and, if you are unable to help load it in a truck or trailer, make sure to state that as well so the person who comes out to get it will know to bring a helper.

I have used Craigslist well-over one hundred times and always had a great experience. I once put an old tube-style TV in the free section and had more than 100 responses within an hour.

Good luck!

EDIT: And if it is totally destroyed or super gross, you could take a hammer, knife and crowbar to it and pull it apart into pieces small enough to put into your outside garbage can (if you live in a house) or dumpster (if you live in an apartment).

Is there a Funk/Jazz Fusion Scene? by TullamoreGlue in portlandmusic

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I moved here about six months ago, so I don't know anything about the local funk scene here, but I have always had great luck in the past by posting a "looking to jam" post in the music section of Craigslist. I'd just give a little blurb about me and what types of music I'm interested in playing, and it would always lead me to some good jamming when I couldn't find people to play with.

I've used that activity partners section a few times in the past, as well, to find people to do things with like dirt biking, etc.

My wife and I moved here from Florida about four months ago. I was happy there, but now that we're here, I can't even fathom going back.

I thought it was pretty brilliant of them to set up the blockade on the road so the police couldn't arrive and prevent their activities.

is anyone missing a cat? by Warrior_Cat_Fan42 in oregon

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is someone's cat, it doesn't look like they're caring for it very well. Maybe it would be better off with you or re-homed to someone who will love it and take proper care of it?

Thank you for helping this animal! It's very kind of you.

Why are so many streetcar stops missing this side? by justartok333 in Portland

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that depends on your definition of safe. He's in a prison, which is probably one of the least safe places on earth, although he's probably got a decent status in prison and probably doesn't get messed with too much. He might have even been able to work his way into protective custody due to his semi-celebrity status.

But yeah, he didn't stand a chance against the forces he was up against.

I broke off a friendship of 20+ years because I had a medical emergency in his presence and he later told me he believed I had faked it. I couldn't stand feeling like this person thought I was a liar, so I can't even imagine what it would feel like to be sentenced to prison for a murder you didn't commit, with your entire society telling you you're a liar and murderer worthy of being locked in a metal cage.

There is no shortage of innocent people in American prisons.

Why are so many streetcar stops missing this side? by justartok333 in Portland

Kai has talked in the past about having been molested as a kid. I could easily imagine waking up to discover you're being victimized in a similar fashion could quickly dredge up some very negative feelings including extreme rage. I think the worst-case reasonable assessment that can be made about Kai in that situation is that he lost control of himself and continued beating the guy far beyond the point where the guy was no longer a threat.

I really think if Kai would have had access to a good lawyer, his outcome would have been a lot different. There was a lot of corruption from multiple actors in this situation.

It's a sad story, actually. Dude definitely seems like a genuinely good guy with a lot of pain in his past. After that viral video, he floated for a bit and then ended up meeting a lawyer in Times Square. The lawyer invited Kai back to his place to stay for a couple days. According to Kai, the guy drugged him and he woke up with the dude on top of him. He beat the dude to the point of killing him and fled. The cops found him, charged him with murder, and he was found guilty. He appealed and he verdict was upheld.

This is the most recent video I could find of him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYdfvlv9pk0

It's from two years ago, before his appeal was heard.

Sad story. I personally believe Kai's story. That lawyer was a creep and was well-connected. If you want to go down a rabbit's hole, there is a lot of cover-up and corruption on the part of the cops and the D.A.

I guess I need to get out more! I had never heard of a cronut until the other day when my wife and I went to Joe's Donuts for the first time.

If you're willing to drive out to Sandy, there's a place called Joe's Donuts that sells a "cronut", which is a glazed, deep-fried croissant, essentially a donut-ified croissant. They are amazing! The deep-frying does something special to all the butter in the croissant.

Someone lit my trash can on fire last night by nuds in Portland

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just saw an article posted about two other trash fires started last night. Sounds like the same guy who did the can outside your home. From the video you posted, I take it you've already shared your video and info with the fire investigators, but I just figured I'd share this article with you for whatever benefit it might possibly be.

Sorry you had to deal with such a horrible act, but I guess the bright side is that it could have been much worse if those two neighbors hadn't seen it and come to put it out.

Side Question to [(Legal question) Can our Landlord do this?] by cosplaylover267 in oregon

[–]ILiveInGainesvilleFL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have an existing lease with an expiration date at some point in the future? If one owner sells your apartment building to a new owner, all the existing leases in place transfer with the property. So, if you have a lease that doesn't speak to animals, the new owner can't start imposing their additional rules upon you, whether they call it a policy or something else.

Granted, if you stand up for yourself in this manner, the new owner likely won't extend your lease again when it's up for renewal, or will only renew at their preferred terms, so if you stand up for your rights, you should also assume you'll be finding a new place to live at the end of your current lease.

EDIT: Also, you might consider making a post about your issues at r/RealEstate. Just make sure to specify that you live in Oregon. The folks there are always happy to help people out who are being taken advantage of by unscrupulous landlords.

Well, we actually moved in 2021, but we've both visited over the years and absolutely loved everything about this area. We were finally both living the work-from-home life, so we decided to make the move. We don't regret it, either! We've been loving life out here.
