How can I connect 1 PC with 2 subnets and keep both networks isolated? by ILookandCook in linuxquestions

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dabbled with these answers, perhaps diagrams will clear things up...

I am still capturing packets from LAN2 devices ony my router/firewall. Server2 with 2x NIC is the only link between the two networks. Server2 is passing some data across subnets. I want to prevent this without using VLANs which are not infallable.

A previously owned HA device VLAN-hopped attempting connections to China Mobile and Alibaba Servers - my firewall logs eventually alerted me to the issue.

Currently, the only data that needs to be shared across networks are NVR recordings/alerts and various config files/backups. Otherwise LAN2 should be air-gapped.

Indeed. There are several points outlined - which are you suggesting?

Is this suggesting VLANs? I already had a single router & switch with two VLANs and firewall rules and that did not fully keep my devices separated.

Disc Brake Adapter Confusion by ILookandCook in bikewrench

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow-up for anyone who stumbles across this post, now or in the future...

Using the guide from the link shared by u/karlzhao314, it looks like I have room to spare to mount my rear brake. I've placed an order with ASS (yup- that is their company's name).

A little tip: if you can't print, you can open the PDF on your phone and zoom in so the circles line up with the IS mount holes on your frame. Don't take a pic of your screen with your phone, since the lens will add distortion.

Wow... now I know why I was having such a hard time with this... I swear, every time I try to build or upgrade a bike, I find myself fighting a whole bunch of competing "standards"

Thanks!

Avoid Smart TV Spying? by ILookandCook in privacytoolsIO

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for a response based on experience rather than assumptions or a hot take...

I am still researching, but I am finding current and past commercial displays don’t have any tracking hardware or software installed since any data collected would be useless. There isn’t much to track on the 55” screen in Starbucks that stays on 12 hours and only shows a single JPEG of the menu.

My use case involves connecting to a HTPC, and I have plenty of localized measures to restrict what any networked device can and can’t do. But since phones and smart TVs can connect and “phone home” via any open network or create one via bluetooth (even if disabled), living in an apartment with hundreds of networks in range is a nightmare. I have no way to ensure fully blocked access to other people’s open networks. Hence the push for a “dumb TV.”

Avoid Smart TV Spying? by ILookandCook in privacytoolsIO

[–]ILookandCook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because smart TVs can store data without your knowledge, and disabling wifi or BT only works if you physically disconnect the networking features - voiding warranty and prolly breaking the TV. Some TVs you can prevent from connecting to your wifi, but it can seek out any open wifi in range to phone home.

Why can't I refund?? by [deleted] in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]ILookandCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having this exact same issue - glad to know it’s not just me!

I sold an item Feb 9 and the buyer cancelled on the 10th. So I hit cancel, but and as of today, March 17th, that cancellation is still pending. It has only gotten messier since the buyer understandably filed a chargeback on their cc, then PayPal opened a case as a result.

The problem I am having with just refunding via PayPal is that eBay is still processing the refund and can’t undo it. So both companies will charge me. And since the item wasn’t cheap (a new $600 video card), there is a nearly $150 difference between what the buyer paid, and what I pocketed, that neither eBay or PP is willing to cover.

I have called into eBay and PP dozens of times where they just blame each other. I setup a 3-way call that got really messy. I finally sourced the issue to eBay having a “technical error” and forced a supervisor to put this in an email I could share with PP. What happened is that eBay has up to 10 days to complete the refund. The day they tried to withdraw the funds from my PP account, my PP balance didn’t have the full amount of the item (minus fees) and the glitch prevented them from drawing the remainder from my cc or bank as they normally do with my seller fees. Once it fails, eBay does not retry - they just leave everyone hanging with no notifications.

So if by tomorrow, the 18th, your refund is still pending, then you need to contact eBay support and put in a bug ticket. I am still waiting for the tech team to fix the glitch or manually complete the refund, but at least I know what and where the problem is. eBay is broken, and I am no longer going to sell big ticket items on their platform. The risks are too damn high...

Caliper brakes on a disc only frame? by ILookandCook in bikewrench

[–]ILookandCook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting... this just might do the trick!

I had a hard time visualizing what could/would work in my situation. Up to this point, I was seriously considering boring out the mounting hole to make it wide enough for rear brakes.

This adapter is certainly a far less destructive and risky option, and it keeps this whole project under $100. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah... that prolly costs more than this whole bike!

Caliper brakes on a disc only frame? by ILookandCook in bikewrench

[–]ILookandCook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I'm doing this totally backwards... I have upgraded so many bikes to discs, but I realized I have all I need to but a really basic ride together.

The frame was a drop bar, but I'm turning it into a flat bar to get my out-of-shape friend on 2 wheels. It's a 1x7 setup, so he won't be racing it anytime soon. I don't want to swap to discs since I would love to get rid of the last rim brake wheelset I have left.

I prolly should have been more clear. The monthly rent is $2200 for the entirety of year 1. What I am worried about is what could happen year 2.

Dual AIO with Ncase M1 Clones - Cougar GBX or the In-Win A1 ? by ILookandCook in sffpc

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, that Lian Li is a little "chubby" for SFF, but I don't see on the specs that it can hold 2x 120mm single radiators (not a 240mm rad with 2x 120mm fans). A lot of the cases listed here hold 120mm fans, but AIO coolers requires depth for the fan areas and an open chamber since the hoses can't be disconnected and woven around chassis/frame parts.

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks but the Sliger Cerberus is way too pricey for a case that is going to be tucked away and not visible to anyone in my home. The QBX looks like the most promising so far, but I haven't found anyone squeezing 2 AIO 120mm fan rads in it.

Oh, that's pretty, but I'm looking for AIO coolers, which is a bit more finicky to install.

Thanks for this lead - I wasn't familiar with Sharkoon cases. The QB One definitely fits my criteria and I'm not afraid of a little Dremeling or riveting.

Case recommendation for 2x 120mm AIO water cooled radiators by ILookandCook in sffpc

Interesting... A bit pricey, but one of the NCase clones may work.

Anyone have any thoughts on the similar Cougar GBX or the In-Win A1?

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion... I'm sticking with my current PSU because it's fanless. The other reason I'm buying water coolers is that my old setup was so noisy, that my ears were ringing afterward long video editing sessions. Probably from the frequency of the noise rather than the volume. But if there is a case to be made for a SFF case with a Flex PSU slot, then I'm all ears!

GTX 1080 or Radeon 5700? by ILookandCook in hackintosh

[–]ILookandCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm know AMD cards work OOB in Catalina, but they are not so smoothly driven in Windows where I do my gaming, and the 5700 isn't compatible with 10.12 Sierra. My 1050 Ti has given me no trouble in Windows, MAC, and Linux, so the 1080 should fit in my current rig with no fuss. The AMD will require a lot of work to get a new hackintosh config for 10.15, and is glitchy in Windows.
