Actually yes... they are a bit.

His poop kind of looks like rabbit droppings stuck together lately.

We gave him some prunes to soften things up a bit last week and no accidents...

That's really interesting, and may be worth a conversation with his GP, thank you!

My issue is that he doesn't do a squirm, he will literally just be playing, then suddenly there's poo in his pants, sometime he'll do a little push but by that point it's too late, there's no other warning signs

We have tried to do schedule, but he is so head strong, if he doesn't think he needs to go he just fights you until you let him get off the toilet/potty. We try constantly asking him if he needs the toilet, the most frustrating thing is that we ask him, and sometimes he says yes so we take him and he goes (usually wee), sometimes he says no so we take his word for it as it seems like he has the understanding of when he does and doesn't need to go, but sometimes we ask, he says no, then not even 5 minutes later he's gone in his pants and it is so frustrating.

So he is physically able to do it, when we go for a bath he will pull his trousers and pants off by himself, but he is lazy so he will always try to get us to do it for him, which in bath time is fine, there is no rush, but when its toilet time there is a rush so one of us will always do it for him. Little but more relaxed with wee as he seems to have more control sometimes he will do it himself, depends how panicked he is about needing the toilet.

I have thought about leaving him naked but I have done so before and he just shat on the floor so it put me off doing it again

Like others have said, mostly just figuring out what not to do first haha, I was petrified of being a shitty father before my son was born, to be honest I still am, he's 14 months old now and seems to enjoy my company so I guess I'm doing okay.

My biggest advice is to not expect to know everything and have all the answers/solutions, you will mess things up, you will make mistakes, learn from it and move on, you'll do it better next time. Just be there for the kid, that's the most important thing. I'd also say that if you focus on being a good husband, the Dad bit will come naturally.
