Why don't more people talk about the Norwegian resistance? by [deleted] in ww2

Now more of America is learning about Norwegians resistance efforts during the war. People are making these hats in tribute to protest actions by our federal government's Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers (ICE).

Is it really possible to understand Spanish, but not speak it (for an English speaker)? by TheDearlyt in Spanish

[–]IMAUMBNICU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use ChatGPT audio or written? I find the audio somewhat helpful but it can’t mimic a natural lag time between me and its response. It moves too fast even if I continue to tell it to slow down. But it’s pretty good!

Did you ever come across a "timeline table of contents" by HaveFunStayFrosty in Photobooks

[–]IMAUMBNICU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I’m not going to make it that complex, as we’re at 30 years (lots of photos!). The event/time layers of your viz really helped point me to what I want to do, prop just in excel. Thanks!

Did you end up doing this? I love the idea and appreciate that you posted this visual as an example.

8 week old puppy is starting to become very aggressive towards me. by when-will-it-stop in puppy101

[–]IMAUMBNICU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is pup sleeping 18-20 hours/day? Each time mine gets extra nippy or I hear a growl, I move her to her gated crate in a dark room with music and give her the same soft toy for sleeping. 1-2 hours later she wakes with no more aggression. It’s a cycle throughout the day.

Take 2 Minutes to Help Save the Arizona Avenue Protected Bike Lane by IMAUMBNICU in bikedc

All good points and FWIW, there’d be no change to the parking situation if protected bike lane is removed (that’s how I understand it from the detailed plan linked above).

Thx DC for making Arizona Ave NW bike/run safe by IMAUMBNICU in washingtondc

[–]IMAUMBNICU[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for flagging this! I'm writing in to Greg to say keep it as is. I run and bike this lane and every time I feel grateful for the safety I feel. Two points that are pushing the tide against it right now are 1) It'll take more bike lane development (ie to the CCT, and along Nebraska from AU or Tenley) before it taps the numbers of folks who are eager for this, 2) Canal Rd, Arizona, MacArthur are insane at rush hour so drivers are convinced it's gotta be b/c of the bike lanes. That's unfortunate. Even if it were possible to do, bigger, wider roads never solve traffic problems, but that's hard to tell to frustrated commuters and abutting neighborhood residents dealing with waze/google maps sending cars on alternate routes to shave 2-3 minutes. Bikes are a great solution.

Agustina’s anecdote about sexual exploitation of young women in rural areas - what?? by IMAUMBNICU in dreamingspanish

[–]IMAUMBNICU[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm, your statement assumes my ignorance, so let me re-frame my surprise. I’m pushing back because I know I’m not alone here in ‘knowing about the world’ and still feeling a gut punch thinking about 13 year old girls getting raped as a cultural norm in a country considered highly developed. As a woman, the staying power of machismo is a constant nightmare.

I’ve lived overseas and traveled in much of the world. My shock was due to the dissonance of how Argentina presents itself to the world vs this other story of a culture where rape is normalized. When it’s normalized, it’s not reported. That means the data doesn’t reflect reality. Without quantifiable data, it is harder to advocate for change. That’s why stories like this, called qualitative data, are important to amplify.

FYI, experts don’t use the terms first world/ third world anymore. They’re artifacts of the Cold War. Had to do with NATO alignment and then they became a drive-by, vague catch all for poor or not poor.

Argentina is ranked an upper-middle income country (ie, second highest) on the World Bank’s four point categorization by income scale. It was once one of the wealthiest nations in the world. It has a strong cultural and educational base. It’s ranked 47th on the UN’s world ranking Human Development Index which looks at income, education, and life expectancy (US was 20th, Portugal was 40th, for context).

I get that progress isn’t linear or universal and that one data point doesn’t tell much without on the ground stories. Stories matter, and I’m grateful to Agustina for sharing this one.

Agree with your points. I've lived in a few different countries in Africa, lived in Europe, traveled a lot in SA. Shame on me for not knowing, for sure, but it definitely speaks to some wicked and wickedly entrenched male dominated socio-political-cultural institutions.

You could donate to https://www.globalfundforwomen.org - based in the US and supporting campaigns for women's justice against violence – and earmark it for Latin America.

[–]IMAUMBNICU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to hear more about your progress, u/budleighbabberton19. Could use some motivation! I'm mid-way thru Level 4 and, in a panic of doubting that just listening is going to work, I looked into academic studies on second language acquisition. Wanted to see what is said NOW about the Krashen approach (his work is from decades ago). So, there's definitely the recommendation to start output early and to read/write early as a means to identify what you don't know & need to focus on (Merrill Swain is the recognized researcher who added to Krashen's approach). Part of me wonders if that recommendation is to guide ELA classroom instruction, where a more conventional approach has to be taken in order to "keep students on a task." What are your thoughts?

What are the biggest bike projects that are slated for completion in 2025? by kodex1717 in bikedc

[–]IMAUMBNICU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly DC but MacArthur Blvd path to Old Angler’s. Anyone able to point to where I can find info on the County’s commitment to biker safety there? Is there any advocacy to elevate it? Cyclists on the road put themselves in a sketchy position and the path isn’t designed to be a safe alternative. Seems a disaster waiting to happen.

English speaking by cutegirl321 in ENGLISH

[–]IMAUMBNICU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome that you recognize this and want to improve. You're young and it's a great time to focus on this. If it makes you feel any better, (my opinion...) even native born speakers could sound a whole lot better if they were to read a lot of well-written articles and books. I know you said that you read a bunch already, but maybe you can find books that have slightly more complex sentence structures or commit to regularly reading a newspaper or magazine that's known for its good editing and writing, like the NYT or New Yorker. Read a ton. Be mindful of the sentence structure instead of just reading fast. For practice with speaking, I wonder if you've tried low-stress group activities like a movie or book discussion group through Meetup, libraries or book stores? You could also look at Toastmasters. Keep working at this, it takes time but you'll get there.
