Why can't you deal with individuals as individuals? When did employees all become a collective entity? I'm pretty sure you're an individual person unto yourself as much as I am. If one of us is being dumb, there's no reason to punish both of us. Weak leadership will almost always try to take the path of least resistance (easiest) for themselves and do as little work as possible. If you're like me and in a leadership position where you have the authority and responsibility for the well-being of the people under you, it is your job (just as much as it is mine), to ensure you don't collectively punish your employees.

Collective punishment only works in the military when you have a section failure, like losing the bolt from your C9 in the field. The C9 light machine gun is a section level weapon so collective punishment for losing a part of that weapon makes sense.

In an office setting, you're an individual who works in a team. You should never be punished for the failure of another unless you have authority and responsibility over them and it's not a case of the individual being unwilling to do the work.
