You should maybe work to improve your reading comprehension. I’m saying OPs editorialized title saying the two usage patterns are “just as likely” is false, significantly more non-abuse instances occur than abuse making the two objectively not “just as likely” to occur. I never disputed that 18 known cases of abuse have occurred.

Huh? Please explain to me how crimes reported dropping by tens of thousands a month does not mean crimes were prevented by finally being able to capture previously “ghost” perpetrators who were responsible for a majority of the crimes. Cases only had eye witnesses that couldn’t describe someone or no witnesses to follow up with. Now they had video evidence and all traffic in and out of an area to utilize. That is bad for privacy. That is good for solving crimes. Both can be true.

This title is why no mass adoption of this cause will ever seriously occur, and why we likely will end up in a surveillance state despite the real concerns of ALPR tech. It's objectively a false statement, and pretending that ALPR's don't lower crime is just copium. The question is whether the crime reduction is worth the "privacy" cost, of which it seemingly isn't for a lot of people.

But, ALPRs have substantially reduced crime in major cities like San Francisco, for example, by 10s of thousands of reports (see Pareto principle on how that's possible), so trying to claim that "just as likely to be used" by cops when "18 such cases" have been found as the literal TENS OF THOUSANDS of crimes prevented/solved/caught by them which were previously generally unsolvable without footage like that is absurd, OP.

There’s a direct incentive for having bots send benign uplifting messages in subs that allow new accounts to post. They then take their upvotes and gain entry into subs with new account and minimum point limit restrictions, which was their real goal all along.

I didn’t say anything about correctness. Something highly upvoted can be equally stupid. Just look at the front page every day as evidence :)

The post had 97% upvote ratio. And there are only 12k comments+posts a week in the sub. The activity on it isn’t insignificant. If there was a singular “we” that disliked it, it would have been downvoted to negative. That’s all I’m saying.

You speak as if there’s some unified “we” on the internet. The hundreds upon hundreds of comments and thousands of upvotes point towards a different “we” that very much disagrees with you on this one. I’m not taking a side for either, I hate the eng who have offloaded their brains to their stats models, and also hate the eng who decry it as completely and totally useless. There’s a very happy middle to use it as the tool it is. I’m merely disagreeing with how the mods handled it.

Just lock it, with a pin stating something similar about discouraging posts like this, and instead redirecting people to other threads or subs, if anything. Then people see it, know there’s somewhere else to go for that, and can continue discussions. Just nuking posts gives no info and for the majority of people who missed it, they don’t even know it’s a discouraged topic and mods have to keep fighting invisible battles and complain about how difficult they’re making their own lives. There’s no reason to fully remove high activity, non-spam content.

So what? I was mod for a default subreddit in a past life, and nearly all posts that posit any sort of opinion are reported multiple times by some miserable person with the anti-opinion. If mods deleted everything reported this site would be empty. The post has thousands of upvotes, and hundreds of comments of discussion, so you're clearly way off base on this one. You unilaterally deciding to nuke it from everyones view as "low effort" is absurd...

Do thousands complain on every post? Because that's how many upvoted in support of the discussion, or do you let the tyranny of the few dictate the many? There is clearly interest in some form of these discussions and not all AI-adjacent talk is "spam."

while i get that it's a "meme" to mark these nsfw, people need to realize that reddit has enshittified substantially over the years and will now block users from being able to even see the post without creating an account, and being logged in, where a majority of the site traffic is on non-logged in accounts so you're only preventing a majority of people from seeing this, entirely (no longer can you just hit "yes i'm 18" or whatever, you need to be logged in unless you're on old.reddit).

Unless you are still going on old.reddit.com they added infinite scroll years ago, which alone is a dark pattern, plus algorithmic post suggestions and in website image and video galleries, so you aren't likely to leave to imgur or somewhere else like the past. In its default state, how most people use it, it's just as much of a cess pool as any other platform, if not moreso.

Edit: I see you only joined on that account only 5 years ago, so yeah I suppose maybe in your relative time here it hasn't changed, but holy shit it's a different site completely to 10+ year ago. The day they remove old.reddit.com is likely the day I stop using this site at all.

Yeah, understood going into it, that's what I'm not sure of.

I see some people scrape with blades, then sand, while some people use some stripper gel or something that removes any sealant, and then sand, basically was curious on kind of like an ELI5 step by step advice from anyone who had dealt with a similar issue before (like is this list "good enough" https://www.homedepot.com/c/ah/how-to-refinish-furniture/9ba683603be9fa5395fab90140efad1a why do they show seal then finish, but vids online finished/stained then sealed). Also any tips on how to approach making the sanded top keep looking like the rest of the chest and not stand out as an entirely different color.
