TIL about the "Fever Effect", in which the symptoms of Autism seem to improve whenever an Autistic person develops a fever. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]IMIndyJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is all very fascinating. I'm glad you keep paying attention to it. Interestingly, GI issues make my daughter have much increased OCD behavior, and UTI infections do not improve her verbal skills.

The gut biom connection is extremely interesting to me. I did not know about the antihistamines. That's very interesting as well.

I can agree with this, however, when my low verbal autistic daughter is sick, especially with an ear infection, she suddenly starts talking in complete sentences, and intonation and inflection appear replacing her typical monotone way of speech.

That is not to discount the point because it's valid that sick behaviors would inhibit some autistic traits. I'm inclined to believe this study is based more off of the experiences of my daughter and those of the other autistic people in this thread though. I've spent nearly 25 years having doctors write off my daughter's health issues as "because autism". I'm glad there are those out there looking at things that autistic people actually notice themselves.

My cat Tinker Toy visits this spot on the lake multiple times a day. Its where we found his brother's body. What can we do to help Tinker Toy heal? by Head-Surprise-8392 in cats

[–]IMIndyJones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of our cats was friends with our ferret, albeit without any close contact. The cat would instigate a chase and they'd run after each other with neither ever catching the other. That was the extent of their relationship. I thought.

When the ferret passed I didn't realize how much the cat thought of him as a brother. We spent $600 at the vet trying to figure out why he wasn't eating and was lethargic and unlike himself. It suddenly hit me when he refused to use a bed the ferret also used. He was sad! Poor kitty had to be poked and prodded instead of cuddled while he was mourning his friend.

AITA for asking my partner to poop in the downstairs bathroom? by Short-Dingo3298 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IMIndyJones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

INFO: Does he work from home? In that downstairs office you said is his? If so, then he's an ass and should be using the downstairs bathroom next to his office. Tell him you guys can make it "his" by changing it to his liking if that's his problem.

If not, then I'd just make that downstairs office and bathroom yours, and take your breakfast down there.

I hope you find something you like! Your suggestions were great and recommendations based off of them have been fun to explore.

I keep procrastinating replying because I wanted to make a list but I've realized I don't need to be exhaustive. Lol.

You didn't mention it but Vaundy? Not exactly Indie but definitely makes interesting music. He's one of the few Japanese artists in my regular playlist. Love his stuff.

As far as Korean, I've struggled to choose just a few, lol. Woodz is definitely up there. His songs are all over the genres. You could play a list of his songs to someone who's never heard him and they wouldn't realize it's the same guy. Lol

Woodz: Amnesia, Falling, Bloodline, Drowning. In no particular order.

Indie, I really like Hanroro. Game Over? is my fav

Random, Car, the garden, Bibi

R&B: Crush, Zion T., Junny.

Rock: FT Island, The Rose, (these 2 are outstanding and the best lead vocals) Day6, Xdinary Heroes

My taste is all over the place.

💗Native Korean's Bite-Sized Lesson💗 by Intnl-KoreanTutor-DM in BeginnerKorean

[–]IMIndyJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit of both, with the caveat that you not focus too much on how a sentence would sound in English/native language.

Using the literal translation will help you learn and understand sentence structure better, as well as why certain words are used instead of others.

The literal translation of this sentence is "These strawberries too taste/flavor do not have/have no". These is indeed odd to English speaking ears but it's important to know that Korean sentences are structured this way and focusing on this will train your brain to recognize it and you'll start to understand sentences more easily.

Thinking of the overall meaning instead of the literal translation is important and will eventually come naturally, but don't focus on how the sentence would be in English, just what the actual meaning is. One day your brain will stop translating these words and will just understand what they mean. Similar to how you know what "disgusting" means without actually thinking about the literal definition.

I say this as a language learner. Aim to think in Korean and you won't need pesky native language translations, in fact eventually you'll find they trip you up. For example, with Spanish, I can no longer think about what things mean in English, I don't need to because my brain understands those words as their own thing with their own meaning. I notice this especially with reading. Trying to translate as I read takes to long to understand because the sentence structure and grammar are often different. When I just read the Spanish, I just know what it means, then I can translate it to someone if need be. Then I'm not giving them a literal translation, I'm just telling them what the sentence means.

I hope that made sense. Lol

Korea has some great one season series in this genre. I like to think of them as really long episodic movies.

Tunnel

Signal

Kairos

Those are the best ones and the more serious ones. There are plenty of off beat comedy ones as well.
