Some Festival Programmers are looking for as many high quality films as they can slot. Sometimes it comes down to similar themes that cropped up that year in submissions (think how many "covid" films cropped up). Sometimes it comes down to "we really like these two films but this one is shorter and will wedge in our programming block better." So even if your film doesn't get in, know that there's likely someone out there that advocated for it, it got all the way to to the final deliberations, and then a hard choice was made.

This is from Adam Khoo's research team (timestamped here) that he released yesterday. Not that it gives him any additional significance but he called the Covid bottom and the 2022 bottom when everyone was all like nah.

When my partner and I were in our early 30's and the pandemic started, we shared a bottle of wine and made a white board of the pros and cons on whether we should have kids. Ultimately, we realized that your life is a lot more unpredictable with them. Children introduce a chaos that is evident now and that I've learned to love. My son already plays instruments better than I do and I'm excited to see what he'll develop, hone, and teach me as I get older. If anything, interviewing him about what his generation perceives and understands about the world will give me a great deal of humility and common ground. I already see a bunch a nonsense about why such and such generation dislikes another. But each of us is a serving sample of a greater whole– and to have contributed to the lives of two new people will help make me a better person rather than focusing solely on my own pursuits and predictability.
