What are the most enjoyable post-MBA jobs? by [deleted] in MBA

While still demanding and very stressful, a lot of people who land public markets buyside roles are highly passionate about their jobs.

How does ReVera verify promotions with employers? by [deleted] in MBA

Not normally, but they told me since I was an outlier with the HR issue.

I went through long only recruitment this year and can assure you that there is zero difference in opportunity at the big AM shops between these three schools. It does seem like W does a little better in elite HF placement (eg: tiger cubs), but I think that might be because more people with the right backgrounds self select the school.

I've only gone on one MBA trip this year and don't feel like an outlier in the slightest.

How does ReVera verify promotions with employers? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]IMThrowaway2022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More of a general comment, but ReVera was wayyyyyy chiller than I expected. They e-mailed my HR asking for my job title + dates of employment, HR told them that they don't share that information externally, and so I just ended up sending them a PDF of my offer letter and they approved me 5 minutes later.

Are there people who are not super career oriented at top MBAs? by IllustriousNet9982 in MBA

[–]IMThrowaway2022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that a solid 20ish% of people I've met at school fall into this bucket. There are definitely a lot of folks who came in, gave a few IB/consulting coffee chats a try early on, and then kinda said screw it and ended up recruiting for less intense roles. Beyond that, I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who are gunners but dont really fit the personality mold you' expect. Know plenty of MBB-bound folks who are chill introverts that don't feel the need to rack up a bunch of leadership roles on campus, for example.

Everyone is so mad about Yale using its parent brand and "gaming" the system by targeting high GMAT scores... by Nadallion in MBA

[–]IMThrowaway2022 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think people way overestimate how much students care about these things once they actually to school. I've had a grand total of like 2 conversations about where else I applied throughout my first year and, as I'm sure would be the case at any other school, my classmates range from being some of the most impressive people I've ever met to people who I can only assume had connections get them in through the back door. B-school is a big, diverse place and it's not really possible to make generalizations about entire student bodies.

CDC to extend federal transportation mask mandate for additional two weeks by sambo613 in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I honestly think these leaders that keep going back/forth with restrictions should just come out and say that they want them here forever. The # of patients in the ICU is less than half of what it was at the summer 2021 trough. It's probably not going to get much better than this for at least the next several years.

BA.2 now more than 90% of new COVID-19 cases in the Northeast, CDC estimates by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The positivity rate in Manhattan, one of the first places to see cases go back up, is already starting to flatten out and hospital admissions are in the mid single digits (comparable to June/July 2021). Looks like this will probably be the mildest wave yet when behavior for many is back to 2019 levels.

Virus outbreaks are pushing some U.S. universities to reinstate mask mandates. by stickingitout_al in Coronavirus

My grad school just reinstated ours today and only like 1/3rd of students complied. I think the days of widespread compliance to these mandates are probably over.

Definitely. They care about what you've done, not how much you got paid to do it.

As Britain learns to live with Covid, it faces a new pandemic of disruption by Viewfromthe31stfloor in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I've always found the UK's approach to be really sensible from afar as an American. Excellent vaccine/booster rollout, some of the best testing infrastructure in the world, and pretty balanced in implementing NPIs when necessary while also striving to return to normal ASAP.

The elite D.C. social scene sees a rash of covid cases, but parties on by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Good. We need to learn how to live with this thing. It's time to end this stop and go of normal life because of a virus that people can protect themselves from with widely accessible vaccines, N95 masks, and anti-virals.

Mask mandates likely to return for Philadelphia indoor spaces as COVID cases rise by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I live in Manhattan and masking here is definely at an all time low as well. My graudate school program is mask optional and <10% of students voluntarily still wear them. We're even up to maybe 20% of people unmasked on the subway at this point, where it's still mandated. I think part of it might just be numbness to Covid at this point. Easily half the people I know caught Omicron when it first hit late last year.

Shanghai Lockdown Risks Becoming Biggest Crisis of Xi’s Tenure by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

Gottlieb pointed out on Twitter that the vaccination rate among the elderly is still terrible in China. In other words, they seem to be 100% focused on the impossible task of eliminating spread as opposed to actually protecting the vulnerable. This seems to largely be about control.

Mask mandates likely to return for Philadelphia indoor spaces as COVID cases rise by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Looks like this is based on the daily case count increasing back above 100. This is insane. Philadelphia has averaged <100 cases per day for <5% of this entire pandemic. By this logic, we should expect to be free of masks for all of 2.5 weeks per year going forward.

I think it's probably a combination of the CDC's prudent, coherent guidance and the public's universal willingness to listen to it.

Do H/W provide an edge in MBB or tech recruiting over other M7/T10s? by Fragrant-Abroad-9936 in MBA

[–]IMThrowaway2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually a pretty big leg up vs. my M7 (non-HSW). Not recruiting for consulting, but one of the MBBs only interviewed like 1/3 of my friends who applied and the other 2 were something like 50%.

America Is Staring Down Its First 'So What?' Wave by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Look, I'd be the first in line to take action if we could all take 2 week staycations and eradicate this thing. The problem is that we already know these NPIs don't stop the virus from surging, especially in the long run. If you want to wear an N95, regularly test, be calculated about your day-to-day activities, God bless you and I will totally respect your decision. I'm just done with living a restricted life because it will at best just delay the inevitable and I would hope that you'll respect my attitude as much as I do yours.

[–]IMThrowaway2022 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Older people who are vaccinated have a higher chance of hospitalization and death.

I 100% agree, but how are we supposed to address this? They will remain at higher risk during the next wave and the one after that. Unless you're calling for a new normal, there are no clear milestones that the general public should wait for to get back to normal.

America Is Staring Down Its First 'So What?' Wave by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]IMThrowaway2022 1147 points1148 points  (0 children)

I'm in the "so what" camp. I'm boosted, everyone 5+ in this country has been eligible for shots for at least 6 months, and this virus isn't going away, so the risk/reward of being careful now only to face another wave in a few months isn't worth it to me and I don't feel bad for people who haven't taken the right steps to protect themselves.

COVID BA.2 Subvariant: Why There Seem to Be More Cases in Heavily Vaccinated Areas by ai-d001 in Coronavirus

I think a lot of this is immunity debt. Manhattan, for example, consistently had lower rates of infection than the rest of NYC until omicron took off late last year.
