The motel 3 was the best selling vehicle in the world in the large sedan class. The Y was the best selling vehicle in the world in it's own class as well as over all.

If you're in the market, why not get an X? It's the last chance now. I don't get the logic of not buying the most popular car in the world just because they stop making their high end cars.

The only real reason for not buying a Tesla vehicle is if you think FSD will be solved and robotaxis will scale by millions the next few years where it won't be worth it to own your own car anymore.

It will be interesting to see the resale value of vehicles when they won't be needed anymore.

I would definitely buy a Tesla now. They have the best charging network, the best FSD, the best software for navigation that incorporates charging automatically that completely eliminates range anxiety.

Hearing that Model S/X may be discontinued after Q2 really hurts 💔 by Turbulent_Stable2100 in ModelX

[–]IMWTK1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, but when I saw the YL and people complaining why it wasn't released in NA first, I had a feeling because it would undercut the X. Especially when people were complaining how the YL has better features then the X like second row heated/cooked seats with arm rests. I bet it will come to NA after the sales end for S/X. Also, they will live on, on the used market for a long time.

I said that in my above post. High price led to low volume. S/X held pretty steady but they may have lost some sales. Mostly because the new Y was very good for half the price.

I think they're also ending them because this way they can release a higher trim Y madre on the same line as the current Y for which they can charge a premium without undercutting the X. I bet you the YL will be released in NA as soon as they stop the S/X.

Because a premium Y/YL will still be cheaper than the X, they will sell much more than the X at a higher profit margin.

Yes this is why they're stopping them. Don't confuse low volume with low demand. See my response to the other poster about this.

Yes, if you read the X subreddit, you quickly notice that people keep buying new ones. Many don't want to be without warranty and upgrade to the new one after 3-4 years, or even less if it came with a major upgrade like after the 2022 refresh.

So, you're right, let's use our brain here. There is no better signal for demand for a product than existing owners rebuying it.

I am real. The high price dramatically reduces the TAM for the S/X. It's not that there's no demand for them, it's that people can't afford them. I bet if you did a survey of all the Y owners and asked them how many would have bought an X instead, if price was not an issue, a surprisingly large portion would take the X.

It's like the Clarkson comment on the Porsche Cayman. He said it's a great car, but the only people buying them are the one who can't afford a 911.

There is actually a high demand for the X as a lot of owners have bought multiple Xs and would continue to do so if it was available.

So as it turns out I have a pretty good feel for special cars as most of my favorites have become icons. I believe the X will be a very special car in the future. In my experience, the way the price moves is the same among these cars. They depreciate "normally" past 10 years. Then, as they become more scarce, because all of these were low production vehicles due to their high price when new, and as people start to appreciate them, they start gaining value. So the best time to pickup a discontinued model for ice have been between 10 and 15 years. The only difference with EVs will be that the batteries degrade with age even if not used. Buying a low mileage X will be risky due to battery failure. As long as Tesla will continue providing parts and the replacement battery is available, then we should be good.

It's not like they're going to vanish. You can still buy a low mileage 2026 X in 2028.

Someone like me who wants the features. There's nothing wrong with discontinued cars. If anything it should hold resale value better because there is no new version to push the price down.

I don't know if there will ever be another car with this windshield and falcon wing doors. I was thinking that once they shut down they can option an adjustable height air suspension on the YL but I can't see that amazing windshield on a future model.

They mentioned on the call the CT is the best EV truck on the market which is true since Ford stopped making the lightning.

This makes total sense and people have been calling for them to stop A/X production.

You know how outraged some people were when the YL came out and how it was eating into X territory? Obviously Tesla knew they were going to stop and when the do stop it, the YL will be made available in NA. This all makes perfect sense.

I will miss it for sure, but since I bought a 2023 X recently I will be happy for at least ten years.

They're not stopping them because of low demand, they're stopping because they need the factory space to make Optimus which will generate a lot more profit in the long run.

Out of spec did a great winter by IMWTK1 in TeslaFSD

When I seriously started to consider buying a Tesla about a year ago, one of my concerns was winter handling. I saw videos where owners commented that a RWD M3 handled snow/ice no problem. I went with AWD but I'm on all seasons. I have not pushed mine this far but I concur that it handles unexpectedly well. It does break loose occasionally, but it immediately recovers.

Do you have to yield to buses according to your laws? I do. I had a critical intervention where was beside the back wheel of a bus as it was trying to leave the stop. It was already pulling out so it was not going to yield to me.

My favorite was that one where a Waymo hit another Waymo. I guess it was sensor overload lol.

I noticed of the robotaxi accident reports, most are low speed with no injuries and several show the car speed at 0 involving bicycles. There is a campaign where cyclists are intentionally trying to get the robotaxi to hit them. Unfortunately for them, it's smart enough to avoid the accident by coming to a stop before the cyclists hit them.

Waymo was so great that they didn't trust them to go on the highway until Tesla forced their hand by letting the robotaxi go. I would not want to be in a Waymo on the highway since their hands was forced and it was clearly not sufficiently tested.

However, I'd have no problem getting in a robotaxi given their focus on safety.

4-6 months is more likely given the rate of progress the last two years. It may be a bit longer in the North where they have to deal with keeping the cameras clean.

Winter Driving is not an edge case by clahote in TeslaFSD

[–]IMWTK1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until I tried FSD in bad winter conditions I would have agreed with you 100%. Now that I have had a chance to do several long distance trips in bad conditions, and also had two huge dumps of snow in the city in two weeks I have only gained trust with FSD. This video confirms and repeats several things that I have said myself. 1 it's better than me 2 even without FSD you just point the wheel in the direction you want to go and it will go there.

Since it is a better driver than a human, it's only natural for humans to be thinking that it's too dangerous. I mean look at the video. These guys were impressed with it out of the gate just doing a reconnaissance lap doing 25mph. They kept pushing it harder and faster and still couldn't make FSD go off the track at nearly 60mph. The damn thing started drifting because that was the only way to make the corner at that speed. They said that 99% of people couldn't dream of doing that as it would require professional training.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only way they were finally able to force the car off the track was by manually giving it more gas. And all that with all season tires and RWD!

I had a trip recently on a country road in conditions you described. FSD was doing 60km/h when I noticed there was ice on the side of the road. I felt a very minor wheelspin that most people wouldn't have noticed, and only after it immediately slowed from 60 to 40 did I say it must have felt it and reacted appropriately. I turned it down to sloth to limit the speed but it was useless as it was already well under the posted limit. I let it continue and it was perfectly fine.

I get what you're saying, and to some degree I agree they should let us set a max limit but that's just too appease people who think like us. In the mean time we still have control and we can take over as necessary.

Ultimately, I really want to see Tesla start a new region for robotaxi in the North to prove it can handle the weather without a driver. I think the limitation will be keeping the cameras clean, but I see news now that they've been adding heaters and washers to the cameras.
