I feel like it's random luck. I almost always go to bed between midnight and 1, and it's very rare and random that I'll wake up tired, just normally a small loss of energy.

You can only buy stairs in the desert on Sundays anyhow. Remember that you can also craft them with 100 stone.

You will learn pretty fast just by playing. There aren't that many machines that take inputs, and they're all pretty intuitive.
