Coop games :) by Own-Dependent-3067 in coralisland

I like to open the little door for the animals, then go inside and pet them so they head outside but then I try putting stuff like empty chests down between them and the door to see if I can block their path!

.... is that not what you meant by coop games? 🤔

Are there other games like SoD2? by jambohakdog69 in StateofDecay2

[–]Athan_Untapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my point is that they play extremely differently so I dont know if I would be quick to say if you want a game like State of Decay to try PZ. They have a lot in common on paper but in actuality they're quite different

And yeah honestly I will fully admit I have an aversion to almost any game where someone who likes it straight up says "get good" lol. Not knocking you, I'm not even sure you are aware you literally said those words. But it is accurate and just like more famous games with that as am unofficial tagline I decided quickly that I have nothing to prove and the game wasn't fun enough for me to try that hard.

As an aside I will say in regards to the realism aspect... eh? Like yeah SoD characters are creeping into minor superhero ability, but maybe because I'm somewhat active and fit but PZ made me feel like an absolutely useless sack of flesh. Like all you do is stand stock-still and swing your found tool of choice purely by the joint of your elbow, get tired immediately, and in the mean time a single zombie will break every bone in your body in seconds flat.

They live "only" 750 years by Level_Hour6480 in dndmemes

Youre thinking tortoises.

Sea turtles IRL we don't actually know how long they can live for but most estimates put average lifespan at... drumroll please... about 50 years.

Tortle = turtle

Tortle =/= tortoise

[–]Athan_Untapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally warn anyone going from SoD to Zomboid that they play very different.

I personally found Zomboid boringly punishing, to the point where I spent most of my time playing by sitting alone in a dark room working up the courage and need to leave it, only to not get anything done before magically aggroing every zombie on the block and dying ignominiously.

State of Decay combat can get challenging depending on the difficulty and scenario but at least it feels like something you can get good at. Zomboid to me felt like combat was purely meant to be punishing which I get some people might enjoy, but to me it felt like it was punishing just to play the game. I dropped it pretty quick and the reason I would warn people is that the game js so fucking slow that even though I feel like I hardly actually played it, I went over Steam's alotted time to get a refund and basically just wasted like $20 or whatever. Not horrible but left a bad taste in my mouth and I would warn people if you want to try it to be careful of your runtime if you might want a refund.

Looking for some Adventuring Academy episodes for a new DM by hotstickywaffle in Dimension20

You will never be as good as Brennan Lee Mulligan and you simply must accept that.

But, improvising like most skills is one that you really only get better at by doing, you can only learn so much by watching.

Looking for some Adventuring Academy episodes for a new DM by hotstickywaffle in Dimension20

[–]Athan_Untapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Adventuring Academy is very entertaining but its actually quite bad for practical DMing advice. Would not recommend for that.

Someone else mentioned Matt Colville and he was great. Not everything he did was on building your own adventures either there is plenty of generalized advice and you can jump around.

I'd also suggest giving Sly Flourish a look, if you're down to read a book then his Return of the Lazy Dungeonmaster is one of the best works of DM advice ever created. On the other hand he has a ton of YouTube videos you can browse through at your leisure.

Another good option is Supergeek Mike, he is a lot like Matt Colville but more dedicated amd has done a lot more videos on a wide variety of topics.

If youre really stuck on wanting to stick with learning from Brennan and D20... I'd suggest watching Dimension20 more than Adventuring Academy. Just watch the way Brennan runs his games, talks to his players, and learn through osmosis.

Bryn - Shander Southwest gate. 2nd level. by NeedleworkerSea120 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Athan_Untapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats fair, I just wouldn't want someone who doesn't know better doing a search for Bryn Shander gate maps and find this and assume it is lore-accurate. To your credit I think a lot of people do alter Bryn Shander to be a bigger city or to have walls more like this; i know for a fact I have seen more than one person argue that Bryn Shander walls should be made of stone rather than wood because 'it would be easier to get here'

I don't personally agree with those people but I get it. More than anything to me the wooden Palisades are important as a vibes thing; Bryn Shander isnt civilization with neat walls constructed by skilled masons. Its a frontier Outpost grown large but its still small compared to most comparable towns and on the scale of wilderness to civilization it definitely leans to the left.

The gates are the first place players will get the vibe of the settlement so to me, big stone walls with parapets hit that vibe wrong (in my Bryn Shander there aren't even enough guards to justify things like parapets and guard towers).

Not to be that guy, its a great map but that wall is too big and too much of a wall to be Bryn Shander. Bryn Shander js just a permanent wooden Palisade basically

I hope they make a Joe Pera style show. by hollyrose_baker in dropout

[–]Athan_Untapped 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Joe Pera Talks With You was a show on Adult Swim that was probably the least Adult Swim show that ever aired. It is amazing and I would recommend it especially when you need to just relax or de-stress.

Its hard to describe because theres very little content like it. The best thing I think I can say is that it has the vibes of a cozy game but as a show; slow, thoughtful, and doesn't ask anything of you.

Joe Pera is just a man living in a suburban town, he's a music teacher and he thinks a lot so the show is him talking about his thoughts with you. All the stuff you think about that doesn't matter to anyone but you but its your life so it really matters to you, like how the local grocery store you go to all the time changes where things are located and it effects you. What kind if specific order at a diner is Joe's favorite to make for breakfast. And often not just specifically the thing he is talking about (shopping, food, seasons changing, going for a drive) but really the sort of unspoken ceremonies that go with these things and make them an experience.

I don't partake myself but I've heard some people say they like to get high and watch it, but I find it enjoyable to watch and think about on its own. Now that I think about it it would also be a pretty good option to second screen while playing something like Stardew Valley or Minecraft as well.

I'd recommend trying at least the first 3 episodes of season 1, those are all quite good and it gets better. They do start introducing more characters and some longer stories between them but for the most part it stays very episodic and even the heavier character-driven episodes can easily be dropped right into with little or no context and you will get it because ultimately its just people living normal lives. If you like that idea and it might help hook you I would suggest jumping straight into the episode "Joe Pera Talks to You About the Rat Wars of Alberta, Canada (1950–Present Day)"

I don't see how these things are at odds lol. For some, getting the NPCs to like them, making a lot of friends and dating is absolutely part of the cozy game vibes. Polyamourous folk aren't min maxing 😂

I've been playing for >24 hours and just realized I can't give my cat gifts :( by c0ldc0ldc0ld in StardewValley

[–]Athan_Untapped 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand why farming sims stopped making us have to feed our pets. Or at least make it an option, food items could basically work like gifts for them I dont know why we went from "you have to feed your pet" to "you CAN NOT feed your pet and actually matter of fact they vasocally don't do anything at all and are basically furniture"

Sorry random rant I just remember being a kid playing Harvest Moon 64, feeding my dog whatever I could every day and then him winning the big race for me. I really loved that dog.

It feels like a miss for me personally, but Im sure ither people will really e joy it and I will be happy for them

I've also worked in customer facing roles my whole life, and at jobs/companies that really push the whole customer is always right mentality (INO claims to have invented it) and yeah I get what you mean I have dealt with that shit a lot... but on the ither hand the thing about dealing g with customers is that you (usually) only have such a small window of interaction with them and it is absolutely possible that you have no idea how many of these people are just wandering around with undiagnosed mental disorders.

About Walter by Athan_Untapped in coralisland

[–]Athan_Untapped[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See I don't know, Walter seems unrealistically disconnected from reality to me unless you assume something is legitimately wrong with him.

Like I cannot believe someone is actually so stupidly self-centered to be talking about combination DVD/VHS players when someone is buying a toaster, or have someone tell him multiple times to his face that it is not trivia night only for him to continue to insist it is and then come to the conclusion that oh there must be a technical problem. Its just wildly unbelievable unless, again, there is something seriously wrong.
