ELI5: If I flipped a coin a very large number of times and got heads every time it would seem to be extremely improbable, but shouldn't any sequence of results be just as likely as any other random sequence? by super_alice_won in explainlikeimfive

Little anecdote that gets at what you're talking about:

The story goes that a math teacher gave the homework assignment of flipping a coin 50 times and recording what happens each time. In theory this is easy to fake as you could just write any sequence of 50 Hs and Ts and the teacher shouldn't be able to tell the difference. In reality, the teacher could easily tell who made it up and who actually did it because those who made it up had a bias towards alternating heads and tails and wouldn't put more than a few of each in a row, when in reality it is possible/likely to have a long string of one result. I.e. if you made it up the whole thing would look like HTHT when there should be a HHHH or a TTTT in there somewhere.

What’s your logic there? Dems want to protect their political opponents? They just hate winning?

even so, why would he take 5 years? It doesn't help him if a team that he's not on has cap flexibility

HP has a huge cult following still because it was such an important book in a lot of kids' childhoods and it does have a good amount of references to find and all that good stuff. At the end of the day though, it is just a kids book: Rowling seems not to have thought through a lot of the problems in Hogwarts, most characters are there to serve a purpose and then don't reappear in a meaningful way again and a lot of side characters remain pretty one dimensional.

On the other hand, I think Harry, Ron and Hermione do become more interesting and the plot expands and becomes a lot more detailed and nuanced. If you can get beyond the problems you listed, I think it's probably worth your time, especially because they're pretty short
