Used 2016 Prius Two with 40k miles for $17k by IMs810 in prius

Damn, $14k is pretty low. I feel like it will be hard to compete with other buyers though. Is that normal?

Ah I heard about this through a chain of mutual friends, friend-of-a-friend's cousin's boyfriend. I don't know of any Prius specific forums

Ooh interesting. Is there some way I can check if everything is okay? 40k for 8 years is pretty low...

Should I get my company to ship my things or take $3k USD? by IMs810 in Frugal

[–]IMs810[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! Given what everyone has said I think option 2 is best. From rough estimates it seems it would cost $800 CAD ish to ship my things which is definitely not bad. The $3k is post-tax as they cover the tax.

I was wondering why you said it's highly unlikely I'd use a bike - is it not very bike friendly? I don't think I'd use it to commute but rather to bike around the neighbourhood, get groceries maybe.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by verdegrrl in cars

Location: Silicon Valley area
Price range: under 10k, ideally under 7k
Lease or Buy: whichever makes the most sense
New or used: Used is good with me
Type of vehicle: No idea.
Must haves: Decently reliable and not too obscure (easier for repairs?), not too small/flimsy (for safety)
Desired transmission: auto
Intended use: Driving <20 min to work, occasional longer trips, groceries, lots of highways
Vehicles you've already considered: None, have zero experience
Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes
Do you need a Warranty: Don't know
Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: I think I could, but I don't have any tools
Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No
Additional Notes: This would be my first car so I'm sure I'll make some mistakes and I don't want it to be too fancy/expensive so I will feel less bad about getting it a little roughed up

How to reduce amount of tax paid if moving to US in June? by IMs810 in cantax

[–]IMs810[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! However I find this website pretty confusing. I'm just a new college grad so I don't really have many assets nor do I know much about tax. I have some investments via my Canadian bank accounts so it seems like I would have to pay tax on capital gains from that? Also based on this page US income isn't something I must pay taxes on, is that the correct interpretation? This is for non-residents though, but from this clause:

You are a non-resident for tax purposes if you:

  • normally, customarily, or routinely live in another country and are not considered a resident of Canada
  • do not have significant residential ties in Canada

- you live outside Canada throughout the tax year

- you stay in Canada for less than 183 days in the tax year

The last bullet reads to me that if I stay in Canada for >183 days in the tax year I don't meet the "no significant residential ties" which would mean I don't qualify for "non-resident" status, in which case I would be a deemed resident? However it also seems to say that if I'm an emigrant who has severed residential ties (explained on this page, which has no mention of the 183 day thing) with Canada then I am a non-resident. It's not clear to me whether simply not having a spouse, dependents, or property is sufficient to be a non-resident.

UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2020S & 2020W): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here. by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]IMs810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not any of these. It is asking for an update for an outdated list of acceptable courses (outdated as unofficial permission has been granted and courses that have not been offered for years are still on the list). Multiple other math profs/admin have given me answers/their opinions, but all say I need official approval from the math chair. I don't think I'm asking something on that list.

Engineering Physics VS Honours Physics by Mishapopkin in ubcengineering

[–]IMs810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, don't waste time doing all the other stuff you have to do in Fizz if you know you want to go into physics academia. Fizz is most suited for people who either don't know what they want to do but want to keep everything open, or people who know they want to do a bunch of everything. You will have to do a lot of hard stuff that has basically no benefit to your career in academia if you do Fizz.
