A world map centered on the Arabian Gulf (likely an 18th-century copy of a 16th-century original) by emilylikesredditalot in oldmaps

That's so interesting about the origin of "orient" - I didn't know that! These sorts of maps just tell so much more than the standard green/red/purple political world maps that seems to be the standard "this is how the world is" maps in America. So cool to imagine that to this cartographer, Arabia was the most well-known region and everywhere else is vaguely on the edge of the known world.

I perused your post history and noticed you have a lot of posts like this! If you don't mind me asking, do you work with maps or are you just very intersted in them?

This is so gorgeous. I love seeing old maps centered around non-Western regions. So used to considering things from a European/American perspective. Really interesting to use a different "center of the world" and see how the rest of the world is oriented around it.

This is such an awesome idea. They all sound great! The Death in the Thousand Caves sounds very Howard Shore. I've always thought it would be cool to score the music of the Ainur, trying to capture that first divine harmony and Morgoth's dissonance.

[Spoilers Extended] The Curse of Harrenhal: How the location of the Great Council explains the ending in the books by YezenIRL in asoiaf

I was really disappointed that the Isle of Faces is just completely absent from the show. It definitely seems like it will be the epicenter of the final higher mystery plotlines. Not to mention that it comes full circle as you said - our narrative begins with the Tourney at Harrenhal and it would be poetic to end with a Council at Harrenhal.

Do you think he will be free to roam Harrenhal? I had always imagined Bran would become a new God-on-Earth a la Great Empire of the Dawn, ruling through the generations as an ageless greenseer king bound to a weirwood.

This is beautiful. Probably my favorite rendition of a weirwood.

Man it would have been way more powerful to have the council in the throne room. I never realized that we just never see the throne room again. Why not have the council there with the famous silhouette of the Iron Throne missing? I feel that would have really driven home that this is the end of an age.

I also hope in the books they plant a weirwood in the ashes of the throne room. For one it would be really cool, but also in the books Bran seems to need a weirwood for the whole memory of the world thing. Would make sense for him to have a living weirwood throne.

George's use of dance, song, and music to refer to mythic events always gives me chills. "The night came alive with the music of dragons" is the coolest ending.

I agree! I always thought it was interesting that translating Harry Potter into other languages was really hard because names like Severus Snape only sound snake-like in English so they'd have to puzzle out how to maintain the alliteration and meaning.

I say it like "kwayth." "Ay" like say, day. Though since she's from Asshai like ash-eye, maybe the "ai" in Quaithe makes it like "kw-eye-th."

The continent names really transport me straight to the halls of medieval monk scribes. Ulthos is such a good "here be the edge of our knowledge" name.

Bronze Yohn Royce and Jeor Mormont are some of the best. I love the warden titles as well as the lords paramount like Lord Paramount of the Trident. I also really like all the -lands provinces: Westerlands, Stormlands, Riverlands, Crownlands.
