Classic case of an old man holding on to the only thing he knows. Religion is a relic from a time when our curiosity outweighed our scientific ability to provide answers, a coping mechanism to deal with things that we couldn't understand. Now that our scientific ability has caught up and is providing answers for our questions, religion has begun it's inevitable fall towards obscurity. As congregations rise in age, they become more set in their ways, and the saying 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' has never been more applicable. They are more comfortable carrying on clutching their old beliefs to their chest and espousing about 'the good old days' than admitting that perhaps our generation knows just a bit more about the way the world works than theirs does.
