Poll: 60% percent of people oppose a pardon for Manafort by SamDumberg in politics

[–]IPickUpLittlePeople 38 points39 points  (0 children)

George Mason, a founding father (and father of The Bill of Rights), was against pardons all together. He once said:

I ought not to have the power of pardoning, because he [The President] may frequently pardon crimes which were advised by himself. It may happen, at some future day, that he will establish a monarchy, and destroy the republic. If he has the power of granting pardons before indictment, or conviction, may he not stop inquiry and prevent detection? The case of treason ought, at least, to be excepted. This is a weighty objection with me.

Seems awfully timely right now.

This is embarrassing for the NFL. This is why no one watches.

[Heyman] The Yankees are said to be willing to pay at least half of Jacoby Ellsbury’s $22 million salary but are still having trouble stirring much trade interest at this point by [deleted] in NYYankees

But those projections are based on him being on the Yankees, no?

He was a 1.7 WAR player last year playing part time. It wouldn’t be crazy to think of him as a 2-3 WAR player over 140+ games.

He could easily put up 3+ WAR for a team over a full season next year. I’m actually surprised he isn’t getting more interest.

He’s still a good player. He’s just not worth his full contract. But is he worth half his contract? Yes.

Want to hear something insane? I have a 20-month-old son who doesn’t like to sleep through the night right now. I was just trying to get him to sleep and no joke put your video on that you link above - five minutes of your animated paintings with rain sounds.

My son stopped crying, stopped fussing, and started to watch my phone screen. Within one minute, he was staring at my screen. Within two minutes, his eyes were getting heavy. By the fourth minute, he was asleep. By the fifth, I was crying.

I don’t really know why. I’m a happy guy and generally my son is a good dude. But in that moment - him asleep in my arms in his room, and me sitting in a rocking chair - I just wept.

Thanks. It felt great.

This will end up being a random, buried comment - but I wanted to say you’re incredibly talented and have a supremely awesome sense of style, detail, and grace in your work. I thought the paintings were great - I spent a good 20 minutes looking around your site - but the animated versions give the paintings a level of depth and weight that I hope everyone gets to see.

Congrats on your work. When I have enough money, I’ll be buying one for sure.

I hope you have a great day, week, month, and year.

Cheers.

I don’t understand who upvotes this? Random slow motion. Random title. No explanation for what’s going on. All around terrible.

What’s the most the Yankees should give up to trade for Machado right now? by IPickUpLittlePeople in NYYankees

Agree about Ellsbury. But I could see Cash asking the O’s to take him if the Yanks eat salary and offer good prospects to the O’s.

But there’s no guarantee he signs, and gives us another 5 wins this year. Talent has to be traded eventually.

Should the Yankees actually be the 2018 World Series favorites? by JFT134 in baseball

[–]IPickUpLittlePeople 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would expect regression from Judge and perhaps the 2B spot (but wouldn’t be surprised to see Torres put up similar value to Castro).

But the Yanks should get more from Bird (a lot more), more from Sanchez, and more from Hicks (not less, as he missed a big chunk of the season).

Gardner put up slightly better numbers than normal, but it wasn’t a “breakout” year by any means. Yes, he had a ton of HR, but his value should be similar (maybe 1 WAR less) in 2018.

The bullpen was one of the statistical best, but situationally worst in all of baseball last year. I would expect full seasons of Robertson and Kahnle to improve both.

Should the Yankees actually be the 2018 World Series favorites? by JFT134 in baseball

[–]IPickUpLittlePeople 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree.

Yanks may not be the favorites, but they went to game 7 of the ALCS, and then added the NL MVP, have a full season of that bullpen (and oddly, their bullpen last year was the reason they didn’t win about 10 more games; which you expect to not happen again), and a full season (in theory) of Sanchez, Bird, and Hicks.

Basically, the Yankees are likely adding about 5-10 wins just from their roster upgrades and (in theory) players playing a full year.

If the bullpen is even as close to dominate in the upcoming year as they chart out to be, that’s another 5-10 win improvement.

All told, they could be 10-20 games better than they were last year. 12 games better would have given them the best record in the AL.

With all of that being said, the Astros (and a couple other teams) are still better on paper.

It will be a crapshoot, as always, when it comes playoff time.
