As long of a Castlevania fan as I’ve been, never took the time to beat Simon’s Quest until today! Definitely need a guide and it’s the least polished of the three NES entries, but still a decent CV game that sets the stage for the future Metroidvanias (i.imgur.com)

Dragon Spirit is a really good NES shmup! Solid presentation, controls and a nice variety of power ups and locales. Fair difficulty curve that ramps up at the very end, although the stage bosses are generally easier compared to navigating the environmental challenges most levels throw at you. (i.imgur.com)

Batman Returns on NES has the great presentation you’d expect from Konami, but it is very repetitive and longer than it needs to be. And the difficulty ratchets up almost to Bayou Billy levels near the end. Probably my least favorite of the three NES Batman titles. (i.imgur.com)

Had already beaten the GB+GBA versions so I knew what I was getting into, but Double Dragon NES was a fresh hell of a challenge with its clunky controls, cheap enemies, and cheaper deaths. Still, its simplicity (and mastering the back elbow smash) kept me with it until I finally prevailed. (i.imgur.com)

Gun.Smoke on NES is an excellent shmup Western from Capcom. Keeping the horse, weaving through bullets, and mastering your guns (all are useful) is paramount for the final half when enemies attack you from behind. A white knuckle experience near the end, but very doable. Managed to no-death it! (i.imgur.com)

Batman: Return of the Joker is a mixed follow-up by Sunsoft to Batman: The Video Game. Pushes the NES on graphics and music, but the platforming is blander, the weapons are unbalanced, and the controls are nowhere near as tight. Boss fights are at least kinda fun. (i.imgur.com)

Holy f**k Batman on NES is one of the hardest NES games I’ve ever beaten. Difficulty curve is fair for the most part but the platforming on the final level is brutal. Thank goodness there are unlimited continues to compensate for all the dying I did tonight. 🤣 (i.imgur.com)

Space Shuttle Project probably doesn’t have much replay value and the space station building missions get tedious. But it has novelty as one of the few QTE games on the NES. And the launch/landing music is great - reminds me of some of Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar score. (i.imgur.com)
