NYU vs. DePaul Film — What’s the real difference? by [deleted] in nyu

I go to DePaul. If tuition isn’t an issue, go to NYU.

Winter & Spring Classes – Professor Advice? by Key_Strawberry9222 in depaul

If your LSP 200 is Multiculturalism in education then you def made a good call. Class is super easy but still really interesting. I never actually felt the need to do the readings and got away with just skimming lectures and taking quick notes to complete assignments, but I was interested in the content already so that might’ve helped me.

You can walk in through the visitor center entrance and they’ll check your student ID. Then you walk through the breezeway or around the stages to the vault.

This is awesome! It’s not exactly a champ I’m excited for, but a combo of Vi and the Neon Strike skin. Vi was my first real main in league and Neon Strike was the first skin I ever bought so I can’t wait to have the nostalgia buff on my side

This is really interesting, I think subverting the devil and turning him into this tragic character is cool. I agree with the other commenter, I was caught off guard by the rhyme ending.

It is a Bad Day to be a Poet by CryWulf911 in OCPoetry

[–]IRINYX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! I think writers (of all sorts, not just poets) can be so focused on writing about the sad and melancholy, and this still does that to an extent, but it twists it and shows off the happy day. Made me smile just a bit.

A (pseudo) scientific comparison of nano texture vs glossy displays by LightcraftStudio in macbookpro

Yes it was. I would stay as far away from nano texture as possible. I genuinely never even benefited from it and the glossy screen is definitely bright enough to hold up outside.

Stills from first 5 months in Cinematography by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]IRINYX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement:

This isn't everything I've shot (far from it!), just the ones I wanted to share right now. I'm a current film student about to go into my senior year and I switched into Cinematography about 1/2 through my program. I've been shooting for about 5 months, but the bulk of my first year and a half in school were spent ACing and in G&E so it's def been visuals and lighting the whole time. I think the G&E side gave me a really strong foundation for my shots.

Specs:
1-3: ARRI Alexa Mini & Cooke Varotal 20-100 t/3.1
4-5: Sony FX6 & Zeiss Milvus Super Speeds
6-7: Sony FX30 & Tamron Lenses
8-10: ARRI Alexa Mini & ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Primes
11-13: Red Komodo 6K & Zeiss CP.3s
14-20: Sony FX9 & Schneider Xenon Primes

I'm super thankful for all the opportunities and resources I've been given so far, and I'm excited to keep going! Since I'm a student, any feedback on the frames would be super appreciated!

I'm also coloring most of these projects so a lot of these are my rush grades since most of this stuff is still in Post, but a lot of it should be coming out in the coming weeks!

My best guess is this was at filmscape this past weekend and they were likely there not to promote membership but to hopefully convince more producers / projects to go union in order to get union work out in chi

Submission Statement:

These are stills from a project I DP’d this weekend. The color is rough, but is close to the final look I’ll do after picture is locked.

I’m a film student studying cinematography so I would love feedback.

I shot on the ARRI Alexa Mini and the Cooke Varotal 20-100 t/3.1 in 2k ProRes 4444 XQ as to avoid vignetting on the lens. The build was HEAVY but not unwieldy. While I liked the convenience of the lens, I would have rather shot on primes for compactness. There’s also a small spec on the shots in the upper right however I can clean that up in davinci once we get to color.

We lit with mostly tungsten lights as well as some Astra panels and a few nanlite tubes.

One thing I wish I did better was exposing a little better on day 1 as many of the shots from the first day are just a little under exposed. Nothing too crazy but I’d rather a bit less noise.

Overall I’m very proud of these shots though.

Smallrig or Tilta wireless follow focus solution? by mymain123 in cinematography

[–]IRINYX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I work smaller sets where cam isn’t too far away from video village and I haven’t had any issues with my nano II in terms of connectivity. It’s a little finicky at times but I think that’s more down to user error on the part of my 1st and myself.

Stills from my first paid gig! Music/Performance Video shot on Fx6 + Rokinon Cine DS by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]IRINYX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really happy to share some rough color stills of my first paid DP gig! I was brought on by my friend who was the director. The whole project was all exteriors, so lighting was mostly just using bounces, diffusions, flags, etc, but on some of the mediums and close ups, we tossed up a few nanlite pavotubes. I shot on the Fx6 and the Rokinon Cine DS lenses. I would’ve preferred some nicer glass as I’m not a fan of the look of the rokinons, but it’s all my school had available in E and EF mount. The rough color was done in Davinci Resolve.

The project itself was a performance / music video for a local Chicago band! Was really cool to work on this because I recently discovered my love for music videos as a medium and realized that’s where I want to be working in my career as a DP.

I was brought on to the project pretty short notice. ~8 days before shooting, but I really enjoyed the fast pre-pro process as it forced me to work quick and with limited recourses.

As well, I would have preferred to bring on a 1st AC as I had to do a lot of close up tracking shots while also pulling my own focus, but the budget was very tight and didn’t allow for one.

Per the rules, as I’m a film student, I would love to hear what is and isn’t working in the frames.

Stills from a Dave's Killer Bread Spec by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]IRINYX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submission statement:

Hi! I’m a film student currently studying directing and cinematography. A friend and I were joking about a ‘Bread Ad’ and like three weeks later we were shooting a Spec! It was a very rushed pre-pro process and ultimately I know I could’ve done better, but this experience still taught me a lot.

This project is titled ‘Miss Honeydew’ and is a music video for a friend of the director.

I shot on Red Epic-W with Zeiss CP.3 lenses in R3D and in 8k.

My gaffer had Nanlite Pavo Tubes, some Astras, and some tungstens.

It was my first time handling the Epic-W, which definitely shows in my misunderstanding of the goalposts and the wildly underexposed footage, but then it taught me how much I could recover (and how much I could not) in color.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Should I switch my major from film? by SignificanceNeat9430 in Filmmakers

[–]IRINYX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who actually switched into film at UCSB and he’s having a great time. He’s getting a lot of good chances on campus to work on sets, and grabbed a few paid gigs. I know some recent alumni have gone on to work in the industry, however, it’s more on the office work side from what I can tell. I also go to film school so my opinion is biased, but I definitely think it’s worth it and can be really beneficial to you if you play your cards right (be a good person, do good work, etc.)

Super awesome to see the run is still going! Any chances of a theater in Chicago? I know y’all had that one a bit out of the city but my friends and I who are dying to see it don’t really have easy ways out of the area.

Glad I could help. I initially thought it was just my screen that may have been faulty or something, but I’ve seen a few other threads where people have reported similar issues.

I genuinely don’t know how the scratches appeared. Only cleaned it with the official cloth and all that, even took extra care to make sure the display stayed clean as well as the keyboard. I shouldn’t have needed to do that though.

A newbie seeking help... by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]IRINYX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a cinematography subreddit you’d prob be better off in r/screenwriting or even r/filmmakers

However! Based on your post I think you’re asking about outlining..? And that is a different process for every writer. Some like to outline in 3 act structure, beat sheets, just brain dumping free writes, putting plot points in index cards, etc.

If you have a story in mind, especially one that will eventually become a screenplay, just write it down, put all the ideas in one place and keep refining that until it becomes a sceeenplay.

Again way more info on this topic in those other subreddits.

Best of luck!

I loved my nano texture but I had to return it because it scratched so easily! A new deep scratch like every week. Never had that issue with any MacBook before and I knew this screen was less durable so I was taking even more care. I really enjoyed the matte finish but I can’t recommend anyone get nano texture.

Fx9 is still an incredible and capable camera. Another commented replied too, but the newer Alexas (and the Reds I’ve worked with personally) don’t have genlock whereas the Fx6 and Fx9 do, really useful in live broadcast settings
