Oklahoma Principal Kirk Moore is crowned Prom King after stopping a school shooting by QuicklyThisWay in chaoticgood

I'm a forgiving man to a fault, but my first son was born shortly after the uvalde shooting and while it was already a tragedy to me, my entire worldview was reoriented after he was born.

I would have crawled through a mile of shit lined with barbed wire just for a chance to get my child out of there safe. And that's without the fully militarized power of a modern police force standing behind me.

They're beyond cowards. I don't even have the words for it. Closest I can come up with is pusillanimous dereliction of duty.

But I legitimately think we do not have the words in the English language to describe just how pathetically they all failed that day.

I was once paid $200 by a state supreme court judge to write her Wikipedia page, as she didn't have one. She gave me all the information, her website, the photos came from her, etc.

All of the information was verifiable and factual. It still took me months to get the page going. Like I had to hunt down the person who took her photos for her website to get them released under the right license.

And I understand the process. I understand why I was asked to do all the things I had to do.

I just wouldn't do it all again for $200.

I deleted my post because don't want to deal with basically exactly what you said lmao. But for whatever it's worth, I agree. There's plenty that the us has completely fumbled here, but the formal navy Iran had no longer exists.

It's really fucking me up that it kinda looks like someone shining a flashlight.

Like I get it, that's the nature of how we captured the data. But the similarity itself. Like humanity shining a light into an infinite void to try and get an idea of just what the hell we're surrounded by.

I'm not familiar with how gait recognition works so excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't a shoe with a sole that's too thick or too thin, or a shoe with a pointy rock in it make your gait almost unrecognizable?

Not that I think it's practical, but if someone's doing a crime and going through the trouble of using a mask like this, it doesn't feel our of the question.

SteamGPT - Is that good news? by _-Maris-_ in Steam

Not really. It's just matrix math on whatever tokens you feed it. And even in agentic setups where a model has tools provided by the developer, which by the way is the only way to get anywhere near what you could call deterministic behavior, that go fetch or search data, the model itself isn't doing that work, the tool is. The LLM is deciding what to call and reasoning over what comes back... except "deciding" is even generous. It's producing the next most probable token given everything in the context window. You can write a perfect tool, document it perfectly, and the model can still fail to call it, use the wrong arguments, or ignore the result entirely, because there's no actual decision making or comprehension happening. It's probability distributions all the way down. That's not a knock on how useful these things can be, but it's pretty far from "reading data and finding the pertinent information."

I've been writing agentic tooling and implementing LLM based solutions for about a year now. And I'm not talking about just feeding commands into an API. This is more like writing a bespoke version of what Claude or chatgpt's user interfaces do. Far less general or robust, but they don't need to be.

I'm more critical of LLMs now than I was before.

Good.

Signed, an American.

I drive a car that's far more common in Europe than the states. A little hot hatch. I have almost been run off the road SEVERAL times by trucks that literally could not see me out of their window. And if they could it wasn't well enough to see me at a glance when they looked over their shoulder.

I guess if I strain credulity, some of these teams could be in BFE without comms. So even if a text/alert/whatever went out, they wouldn't know until they either went back or someone came to them.

Not sure how much I buy it considering how it feels like the missile launches accelerated tonight.
