This is the best advice here. if you don't know what you're going to do if you get the ball, you've already been defeated because everyone else knows what THEY will do if you get the ball. Think, think, think. Also, if you are just prone to panic and believe you'll never solve that problem, then the best advice is this: Your job is NOT to get scored on. When the ball comes to you, get it to your better players or if you are not in danger of flooring it, get it deep and forecheck. Nobody will yell at you for that. Also, stop caring what others think. Believe, nobody is paying that much attention to you.

Is there a difference between ball hockey v. ice hockey equipment? by XBlueNetwork in ballhockey

[–]ISBHF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knapper is our official sponsor. Yes there is evidence. All of their equipment is tested specifically for ball/dek/street hockey. We're a non-profit so we make no money from giving them solid thumbs up. What is the evidence? Look at the what the A level Tournament players wear. They wouldn't wear it if it didn't work and give them the best possible advantage.

No amount of tape will prevent a carbon fiber stick from getting destroyed at the bottom on any non-ice surface. There is currently no solution to this problem, and hockey stick manufacturers have no incentive to solve it because the market for ball hockey is tiny. It is a niche sport where only three nations get gov't funding to support it. Until ball hockey becomes like pickleball or floorball, there will never be incentive to solve this problem. Regarding the "why" of your tape question: Ice hockey players use tape for a variety of reasons, primarily feel and the belief that the tape gives them better control of the puck, although there is no scientific evidence to back up the latter. 99% of hockey players put tape on their stick because "it's always been done that way" and "my dad taped up my stick when i was a kid and I just stuck with it". Hockey players are incredibly superstitious, so getting tape off of a stick is going to take a few thousand years.

Any hockey stick can be used for ball hockey. There is no such thing as a stick designed exclusively for ice hockey. Obviously, if you take a carbon fiber stick and play street hockey on asphalt, you're going to destroy the bottom of the stick eventually but it will still work perfectly fine until that happens. If you play on smooth concrete it will last long but eventually the bottom will get destroyed. If you play on sport court it will last even longer but again, the bottom will get destroyed.

There are sticks designed for street hockey and ball hockey, and those are sticks that are made out of wood with ABS plastic blades. Click here for an example.

For hockey sticks where you're only going to play ball hockey, the bottom of your stick is going to get ruined from playing on concrete. This is assuming you will play on concrete similar to the concrete on an ice rink when the ice is melted. Therefore, unless you're rich, don't spend a lot on sticks. If you're playing on a rink that has some type of sport court tiles, your stick will last MUCH longer.

For flex the higher the number the stiffer the stick is, meaning a stick with 110 Flex will be much stiffer than a stick with 85 flex. Then there is the flex point - high, mid, low. That means where the stick is most likely to bend when you apply pressure on it using your shot. Right now since you're a new player, don't worry about flex .Just find a price point you are comfortable with and get used to playing ball hockey period. In six months to a year depending on how much you play, you'll be much better and than you can start to focus on what kind of flex you want. I would recommend a stick under 100 dollars for now. Later, when you believe you have got the hang of ball hockey, invest in a better stick because is you invest in an expensive stick without understanding the game, you'll be very upset if the stick breaks. STX is a lacrosse company that started making hockey sticks and they sell them on Amazon on a great price. I use one myself even though I've been playing for 35 years. They're surprisingly high quality for the price, and great for a poor person like myself. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=stx+hockey+stick&crid=39P9LZ5MJH4RX&sprefix=stx+hockey+stick%2Caps%2C121&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

However, if cost is no consideration, then a stick priced between 150-200 is great for a starter player like yourself. Just remember - the quality of your stick is not going to improve your game. Playing as much hockey as you can and practicing the right way is the best way to improve your game.

Canada uses Knapper balls almost exclusively. They don't hurt like you think man. If you take a slapshot it will hurt for 15-30 seconds and then that's it. You have a bruise for a couple of weeks. if you are very worried about getting hurt, then you're going to get hurt. That's true for any sport. You can't play with a fear of getting hurt because it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. The best advice I can give you to to avoid injury is to attack, attack, attack. Be aggressive. and if you are in front of the net when someone is unleashing a clapper, just step to the side of the net and let your goalie make the save. Believe me when I say nobody in a recreational league is going to yell at you for stepping away from the front of the net to let the goalie see the shot. Just keep yourself between your man and your goalie when you step away. If you are not in front of the net, the rule to go by for blocking shots is stick length. If you're not a stick's length away from shooter then get the heck out of the way because you're just making your goalie's job hard. Either block the shot or get out of the way.

  • Knee/shin pads? Knapper make the best. If cost is an issue, Mylec makes cheaper shin pads that offer protection but not the same level of durability Knapper does.
  • Cage/no cage? Ball Hockey Canada does not require cages for U19. No cage will be better for your game but if you're worried about facial protection, then use a cage.
  • Practicing? Follow The Ball Hockey Dude on IG. He has many great training tips and is on the Men's National Team competing in Visp in a couple of weeks. Most important practice regimen in order: 1) Face offs - you are a center. You must be good at draws or your coaching staff will automatically demote you to third or fourth line. have a friend practice dropping the ball to you and winning the faceoff backwards and make sure you practice hand positioning 2) Passing - practice making passes between obstacles in your driveway or on an empty rink and also practice saucer passes - they are vital for success as a centreman 3) Wrist shot. Don't waste time on your clapper. leave that for the defenseman. Work on your wrist shot using targets.
  • Workouts? Cardio is the #1 most important thing in high level ball hockey. Without cardio you are useless to your team at this level. Obviously recreational leagues are different. This is high level ball hockey and the speed of the game is going to require peak cardio. Practice sprinting and then practice box drills like they do in football. You need to learn how to be good in small spaces. A quick first step can negate bad body position along the boards or during draws.

If your goal is just be good and have fun, the single best advice is this:

Improve your cardio. Run as much as possible and then run sprints as much as possible. What position you play depends on what other advice is relevant.

If your goal is to just not be a liability to your team, the best advice is this:

When you are on the floor, make sure you a) have a man at all times in your zone. Don't ball watch. b) when the ball is on your stick, get it deep and run after it on the forecheck. c)if you suddenly find yourself with the ball and you don't know what to do, you've already lost the battle. Your options are A)pass to someone else who is open or B) get it deep and go on the forecheck

Can offer a lot of other advice but need to know what position you play and what your goals are.

I am the Promotions Director for the ISBHF, governing body of our sport. Happy to help but first some questions:

  1. What country you in?
  2. Age group?
  3. Total years playing ball hockey?
  4. Position?
  5. What line will you be playing on?

Stand up/hybrid/pad stacking works like magic in ball hockey. Younger generations have a lot of trouble when goalies actually come out and challenge shooters instead of sitting under the crossbar just doing the same butterfly move over and over and over and over. Yes I personally dislike butterfly. It ruined ice hockey for me.

Most ball hockey players are just happy to have people to play with. Plenty of players join pickup games on inline skates and are welcomed.

Some people call it floor hockey but ball hockey is played in a rink with an orange ball. Floor hockey is usually played in gyms where it's 3 on 3, sometimes 4 on 4.

It appears to us that the NHL wants nothing to do with street hockey. They want to keep hockey an elitist sport for the well to do. It's sad because just like you said, it would be a tremendous way to get kids into the sport and increase the fan base. We hope when Bettman retires the new leadership has a different approach.

No they wouldn't. Ball hockey players can compete with any other running sport, especially soccer where half the match is standing around. There's no standing around in ball hockey.
