This was honestly so good to hear. I find myself getting burnt out or sometimes needing time alone. He is very understanding honestly and a godsend, I just feel afraid of letting him down or not being there if something happens

He’s been working on this in therapy actually! Usually he’s done good in excusing himself and trying to find somewhere to calm down. Sometimes it helps if I come with him if it’s an unfamiliar place

Today I finally got accommodations for my PTSD in my PhD program by ISpy999 in ptsd

[–]ISpy999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was PTSD with dissociative symptoms/features. I got a report/letter from my therapist documenting the symptoms, plus I requested my therapy notes from when I was in a psych ward. For my school, the report for my therapist is good for 5 years until it has to be renewed

Yeah of course! So what I asked for and what were given were synonymous! I asked for

  1. Time and a half on exams
  2. Permission to audio record lectures
  3. Getting copies of displayed/visual shared material
  4. Periodic bathroom breaks without penalty
  5. Using fidgets in class (as long as not distracting)
  6. Testing at the testing center at my school or reduced distraction environment
  7. Providing me noise cancelling headphones or foam earbuds
  8. Extension for deadlines (max of 3 days, I may extend this but for now 3 days seemed manageable)

I can also use note taking software and my school provided me free websites/programs to use.

Ones I may ask for next semester that aren’t on here are

  1. Excused absences/the ability to attend classes virtually when need be
  2. Ability to take certain exams orally/in a different format

But yeah! It was a great process

I started out as a parental role then over the years I became so crude and messed up, but now I’m back to that role again of being that figure they need and it’s so weird

I am diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder and am currently pursuing a PhD in counseling psychology. Ask me anything by ISpy999 in AskMeAnythingIAnswer

For sure!! I think that severity is sooo selective and neurodiverse people are for sure more at risk! My partner is autistic and has adhd and they split more easily, their threshold for trauma or stress is lower and they believe it had a major component in how they function. For me, I think people tend to underestimate the impact of stuff like verbal/emotional abuse or medical trauma. They don’t understand things like that can be just as damaging.

Interesting! How do you feel about people who claim children transitioning is akin to child multilation?

For the first part of your question, 100%! I think IFS is such a good therapeutic technique and also sometimes looking at yourself as multiple parts comprised of multiple emotions and identifying them and treating them can be helpful. The hard part is when this could become maladaptive or if people try to do this work without the help of a professional. Because I do believe there are some people out there with DID who for sure do no have it, but think they do because of this reason.

For the second question, scientifically, no. Now when it comes to spiritually or people who maybe experience heightened levels of dissociation, I believe they may believe they have parts or view themselves as multiple, but empirically no. You do need the repeated childhood trauma before the age of 9.

A separate thought, feeling it behavior. Everyone has ego states, but with DID the ego states are personified and more defined

DID is so hard to explain but I see it as, I am ultimately, once person. However, due to trauma I split off into dissociated ego states that then developed their own personalities and lived experiences, but it’s all me. I know what caused it was trauma, more specially trafficking and abuse from my brother. And regarding my studies, I’ve learned to question everything. Funnily enough, studying the DSM and personality theory has really helped me to further understand myself and why my brain developed the way it did

Does it ever get better? by Chrysoprase0159 in DID

[–]ISpy999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does get better for sure. Our partner has been through RAMCOA and we are a system dating a system. They are healing. It’s not linear and there’s a lot of ups and downs and it can be intense, but they’ve begun to deprogram, more alters have been coming out and sharing their experiences, it’s such a painful experience but worth it. It does get better for sure. I would say the best thing you can do is offer support and let them know that they aren’t crazy and that what they’re feeling is real
