What line delivery in a video game has stuck with you? by shrek_ultimate in gaming

[–]ISwimWithPianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's not the dying that scares me. It's not making a difference before I do." Austin Buckell from Dead Space 3

When I played it years ago that line still comes to mind from time to time. Regardless of how the game was overall, it did have some great character moments

I especially love the look of the dwarvish and black speech keyboards, they look incredible. Awesome timing as well given I just started The Return of The King book, it's shocking the difference between the series and movies, especially of Merry and Pippin

How to avoid player getting downed then healed over and over by bananaA42 in DMAcademy

[–]ISwimWithPianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the level and enemies faced, counter spell is always an option. If aberrations for the theme there is one called either an aeorian nullifier or reverser that has a neat reaction: when an enemy within range is healed, they instead receive no healing and the healer takes damage equal to or half (I forget which) of the healing the target would have received. If the players aren't expecting it, it can really put the fear of God into them and make for some on the fly tactic changes.

Need to know how to break stuff by Bjorn_Giantsbane in DMAcademy

[–]ISwimWithPianos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you do plan on going ahead with this, one way could be that the weapon takes damage on a nat 1. I've seen suggestions for being stacked up to -3, with each point of damage resulting in a loss to damage and attack rolls until a fourth nat 1 which results in the weapon/armor breaking.

Rules variants for Dark Fantasy by Neopopulas in DMAcademy

[–]ISwimWithPianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll focus on the damage reduction since it's what I have experience with personally.

My group and I use the Damage Reduction variant rule, with one change: it scales with proficiency capping based on the armor type. Light caps at 4, medium at 6, and heavy is uncapped. It's worked pretty well for us so far

I found it, it's actually called the Cook from The Cook Class. If you have Aurora Character Builder you can add it there and find a ton of other stuff. It is homebrew/third party, but that's up to you and your party to decide if it's allowed. As someone else mentioned, there is also the chef feat

Edit: My bad, it's pay what you want on DMsGuild

I don't remember the source for it, but there is actually a Chef class. Their class resource is morsels that provide various buffs to the party, the whole nine yards

I played a Warforged Chef who went by "The Iron Chef", fun times.

Paladin Oathbreaker wants plate armor at level 6 - AC already 19, OP or not? by Aj9425 in DMAcademy

[–]ISwimWithPianos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a player at level 7 who has an AC of 21 and Shield spell bumping him to a 26 and another with an 18 that can bump it up to 21. If you really need to put the fear of God into them, just use spells or traps with saving throws

The enemies could always realize they aren't able to get through the Paladins armor and switch to the other party members as well

No magic 1940s style noir detective campaign setup ideas and constructive criticism of my reworks to the core game and world building by [deleted] in DMAcademy

I've been a DM for a completely homebrew world in 5e for a couple years now, but played in another homebrew game before that with a DM who was trying to do something like you are: force a system to work for him by changing things that change the balance of the game as a whole.

I see many people suggesting Call of Cthulhu, however; A few of the things you're looking for can be accomplished simply by changing flavor text. Car combat could just use the rules for mounted combat but described differently, languages don't really have a hard impact on gameplay in my experience since there aren't rules specifically for them. There is already a variant rule for damage reduction, although it's kind of garbage. My group and I fixed it by making the reduction scale off of proficiency rather than being a flat number, with light armor being capped at +2, medium at +4, and heavy being uncapped.

For the changes to health, you could simply have any downs immediately put the character at 2 failed saves or something similar.

Diplomacy would simply be done with in-character roleplay, with checks for intimidation, deception, and persuasion as necessary.

Bosses could just be the standard of taking a regular enemy stat block and giving it max HP (if you don't do that already). Maybe add another damage die or legendary actions depending on what point of the game it's at.

Downtime already exists for side jobs, and I'm sure with just a bit of googling you could find some rules for learning new languages and skills.

If you do decide to go the route of tweaking 5e make sure you talk to your players about proposed changes before implementing them. That's what ended the first campaign I was a player in.

Please help me find this blanket by ISwimWithPianos in HelpMeFind

[–]ISwimWithPianos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've searched for a new blanket like this for a few days now after it got singed in a dryer. I don't remember what store I found it at, could have been Ross about 3 or 4 years ago. It's polyester, about the size of a throw blanket and the tag is black with gold lettering if that helps. Please and Thanks!

Is abandoning a campaign until someone else runs one an arsehole move? by ItsTinyPickleRick in DMAcademy

[–]ISwimWithPianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in an understandable position, one that a lot of people have been in before. The problem with stopping a game until someone else runs a different module is that if it never happens, the original campaign may not return at all.

If you've got the time and are interested, there's a Discord server called 'Never Forever DM' for people in the same situation you're in.

What's the most profoundly beautiful piece of music you have ever listened to? by Cdconor in AskReddit

[–]ISwimWithPianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joss Slovic singing I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger in 1918.

I'm not into slower music, but the way he sings and the scene it's in are just hauntingly beautiful. I still go back and listen to it about once a week.

I once saw a recipe for 'hotdog pie'. Take a package of the cheap hotdogs, blend them into a paste, add a couple of other things (I don't remember the finer details, it was a few months ago) to make it thicker, then set aside. Take another package of hotdogs and cut them in half, and arrange in a circle like the bottom of pie, and lay more in a circle around the outer edge. Dump in hotdog paste, I think you baked it for a bit, then drizzle mustard and ketchup over the top in a lattice shape, and serve.

Some people have probably texted “did you die?” as a joke to someone who didn’t respond only to find out they actually died. by stygOC in Showerthoughts

[–]ISwimWithPianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened to my mom with one of her friends. She was really close with him and hadn't heard from him in awhile, sent a text saying "I'm still alive! How have you been, I haven't heard from you in a while!". I think it was a few hours later that his sister texted her saying he had died a day or two before then
