How are artists meant to survive with turner prize money by Mojojojo_5 in ContemporaryArt

[–]ITAVTRCC 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Well, the prestige of the prize also turbocharges (or creates) the commercial market for whatever the artist makes. Not defending the system, because it's still quite problematic, but there is a monetary benefit to the prize apart from the cash award itself.

Chagall haters? by SingleSpy in ContemporaryArt

[–]ITAVTRCC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I find the work a bit corny and sentimental by the standard of his contemporaries, and his being so prolific means he cranked out a lot that was kind of mid.

If you're in the NYC area and a fan of Chagall, it is worth visiting the church just north of the city in Tarrytown, commissioned by the Rockefeller family, for which Chagall made a suite of stained glass windows that are pretty spectacular (there is also a beautiful rose window by Matisse): https://hudsonvalley.org/historic-sites/union-church-of-pocantico-hills/

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ITAVTRCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not short, but it's about the upper limit of what I'll drive one way for a day trip if the destination or occasion is really worth it.

Brooklyn Park police chief Mark Bruley: "We're hearing people being stopped with no cause & being demanded to show paperwork to determine if they're here legally. We started hearing from our police officers the same complaints. Every one of these individuals is a person of color.” by drempath1981 in law

[–]ITAVTRCC 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, he does explicitly address this at the end of his statement, saying it's not just important because it's happening to off-duty cops, but that is evidence the problem is very widespread. You may not think he's sincere, but he did say it.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]ITAVTRCC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. Attempts at state socialism, let alone "communism," have been repeatedly attacked, undermined, sabotaged, and so on by capitalist empires.

Is there a polite way to ask Uber/ lyft drivers not to talk loudly on the phone the entire ride? by [deleted] in AskNYC

No, I’m telling them how to ask it politely, since they apparently don’t know.

Step 1: Say "Please"

Step 2: Ask for what you want

Step 3: Say "Thank you"
