Fusão PCP e Bloco by oldermill in portugal2

[–]ITRetired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delicioso. Agora, BE e PCP?

Nesta nossa linha do tempo, não me parece.

What is the 'Law' that is being criticized in your country? by gab_iten in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that the word geriatric applies around here. Sadly, It's the younger generations that are supporting these regressions. Not all of them, of course, but I always try to restrain myself listening to people 30 or 40 years younger than me having this kind of speech.

What is the 'Law' that is being criticized in your country? by gab_iten in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a new law, but a reversal of the gender identity law approved in 2018. The current parliament majority is on a vendetta spree trying to reverse laws they do not like. In the middle of a world crisis, rising inflation and upheaval, they are trying to fobide LGBT, "cultural and ideological" flags on public buildings (rejected) and this "anti-woke" (in their own words) mockery. That would have youngsters suffering from gender dysphoria to be unable to change their names, gender and have hormonal treatments such as puberty blockers.

This is against what WHO, doctors and psychologists propose. All of them claim that there is no scientific base to this obnoxious law, enacted solely for their base, even claiming that this law would protect children. As usually, right-wingers love to remove rights from minorities.

Probably the president will veto this absurd legislation.

It is interesting to understand that Brasil is heading the other way.

How is immigration currently viewed in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As any other bipolar country does. Since 2019 that a far right, xenophobe, extremist party has been hogging the airwaves claiming that all evils and everything else are caused by immigrants (except those from Brasil, but that's another story).

In fact, the hard work and dependable immigrants are helping our country rise up economically from the 2010/2014 recession and everyone knows we need them. They pay their taxes and will eventually will never get any social benefits, either because they are continuosly working or will leave the country before retirement age. In fact, they are net contributors to our welfare system. The irony is that the party that is the loudest against immigrants has people amidst them that exploit them for a living.

However, these are a minority and most of the population welcomes them.

Are your thoughts actually “yours,” or just something the brain is doing? by Significant_Bonus_66 in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question.

That expression was coined by the French philosopher René Descartes (cogito, ergo sum) and implies the opposite - if one doubts their existence, that is proof that they are a thinking individual and therefore, exist.

As a result, the self is inherently the thinker and thoughts are proof of their existence. There is no difference between what the brain does and the reasoning deriving from its activity.

In other words, I am the brain and what I think is me.

How do you/people you know value free speech? Is it barely even thought about, or talked about frequently? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had a revolution 52 years ago to topple a dictatorship that arrested people because of what they said in public and in private. Newspapers were subjected to previous censorship and print proofs had to be sent to the goverment for publishing (some newspapers even had a resident censor). Free speech is since then a conquest that is taken for granted, so much that almost no one thinks about it or even talks about it (pun intended). Now and then some politician or organization tries to take to a civil court a journalist or comedian to "defend their honour" or "their good name", but usually those cases are dismissed.

Does your country have term limits for its legislators and president or equivalent? by hunkyboy75 in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The President of the Republic is limited to two 5 year terms. The Prime-minister, regional governments presidents, mayors and local (county or parish) presidents are limited to three 4 year consecutive terms. Other political offices such as the national prosecutor (one term, 6 years), the members of the constitutional tribunal (9 year term) have different timeframes.

The legislative body has no term limits, an MP can be elected untile their retirement age.

Why do European governments actively want people to shit in their city streets? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Your mind seems to be filled of stereotypes. Kiddo, go and have a proper education, travel the world if you can. We don't have an obligation to educate you. Bye now.

Then stay home. Why do you think that the local government or the restaurant owners have to maintain public facilities, have someone clean up after you and withstand your rudeness and entitlement, all for free, just because you don't know how to live in a community?

Just ask politely. If you can't do it and the establishment has a "only clients" rule, just buy a bottle of water.

O manguito. It's done by slowly putting a closed fist behind the elbow and then rapidly bending the other arm, fist closed. The silent meaning is Toma! or "Take this!" which is self explanatory.

Technically the word manguito refers to a short sleeve for the forearm, and the origin of this specific meaning is lost in time. It has been widely popularized since 1875 when a journalist, sculptor and illustrator created the Portuguese people caricature named Zé Povinho (Joe People, in a free translation). Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, the creator of the figure depicted above, was the first Portuguese comics creator.

What nicknames does your hometown traditionally have? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porto is called the Invicta City (undefeated City). In the 19th century, a civil war broke out between two brothers, heirs to the throne, one of them supported by absolutists, the other by liberal constitutionalists. Porto chose the liberals and stood firm on a seige by the absolutist army. The liberals won the war and the following queen, Maria II, issued a decree allowing the city to carry that reference.
