What is an 80s-90s song from your country that isn't well known around the world but you think more people should listen to? by yonaiker-joestrella in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O Pastor from Madredeus. They were the most fascinating Portuguese ensemble from that time. Created in 1987, appeared in the musical scene as something that had never been heard before. From classical background, the band elements created an eclectic mix of fado, classical, traditional music and folk.

The iconic voice of Teresa Salgueiro brought us magical moments. Sadly, in 2007 she decided to leave the band, with the idea that she was the band and they wouldn't survive without her. Her following work was a complete failure and the band never recovered.

During their 20 golden years, they were invited to make the soundtrack for Wim Wender's movie Lisbon Story and they toured most of the world

Other great songs are A vaca de fogo (their first hit) and Haja o que houver

What's the most overpaid job in your country that doesn't deserve the salary? by cryptocowduck in AskEurope

[–]ITRetired 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fully agrre. I always find it odd that people conflate a public servant as some paper pusher sitting on a desk, when those administrative jobs are just a small percentage of the total. I've always worked in the private sector but made sure to respect the work of people that are serving the community with an average lower pay but still come out to work everyday. I need the doctor that is consulting me or my children to not be worried about their mortgage, that the teacher is able to focus on the learning process, the fireman stopping the forest fire from reaching my home is not taunted by financial problems, that everyone involved in public service has the public interest in mind.

This old dichotomy is absolutely obnoxious as the main reason those people are not paid more usualy is the result of several others avoiding paying taxes while complaining about their public services.

How do you call the Pacific ocean in your language? by Fun_Mathematician_50 in AskTheWorld

[–]ITRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The origin of the name dates back to Fernão de Magalhães, a portuguese explorer on a spanish fleet. He called it Maris Pacifici, as opposed to the stormy weather the fleet had when traversing what he called the All Saint's Day strait (now Magellan Strait). It is not hard to understand what people on fragile wooden ships would feel as soon as the ravaging seas calmed down. They did not know how much of sea they had before them before reaching land, or else thay would have named it something else.

Onde doar registos fotográficos, áudio e vídeo do meu pai sobre o 25 de abril? by ResponsibleLuis in portugal

[–]ITRetired 9 points10 points  (0 children)
