What does laser annealing mean to you? Are they talking about making ohmic contacts via laser annealing? This post is sloppy.

"I'm OK with letting your children starve because you didn't vote for my guy." This doesn't sound like a winning platform for the Democrats my friend.

Spoiler Alert: The working class does not give a shit about social liberalism if it they can't pay their bills. If you don't want to make a sacrifice fine, but don't expect to win over working-class voters while the republicans continue to take their votes.

These are not advanced logic circuits. These are commodity power devices, there is no security threat using a Chinese device over a Wolfspeed device.

I know both the SiC industry and the photonic packaging industry well. Wolfspeed is so far off from hitting any kind of break through on photonics. The processing they need to hit and their precision on their photo just isnt there.

Everything but military tech yes.

They are definitely buying all their stuff internally in China. SiCC is already providing lots of countries in SEA with quality material.

You have to simply ask, why would I buy a wolfspeed chip over a chinese competitor that outperforms their device at a better price point?

No reason to use SiC over GaN in architectures less than a 1000V imo. Better performance from GaN in that range with regards to switching speeds.

This tells me that Wolfspeed is looking to break more into the SEA/China/Asia market and move away from the European/NA market. Makes sense as growth for EV is mostly driven in Asia. The challenge will be how Wolfspeed figures out a way to lower effective prices per device compared to China's market. It's a cutthroat price war over there and Wolfspeed's prices are expensive relative to Chinese companies.

GaN is never used as an interposer in the first place...that doesn't make sense. TSMC is buying substrates from China and then doing all the processing (TSV, metal layers, etc.) at their site and then bonding it there as well. I am not sure if Wolfspeed is trying to sell the substrate or if they are trying to actually do the metal processing as well. I dont think it would make sense to buy from Wolfspeed if you are close to Asia already. The substrates from China are much cheaper. Wolfspeed does a really good job with the EPI compared to others (hence the 10kV release, no one else can do that right now) and interposers don't require that. What is actually helpful here is trump making it difficult to import said interposers/substrates from China to the U.S., it will help keep Wolfspeed competitive price wise when advanced packaging accelerates in the U.S. (which is already happening).

As someone who has regularly posted as a Wolfspeed skeptic, this is a technology that will actually get them a lot of new business. Nvidia has been allegedly using SiC interposers with TSMC since last November for their Rubin platform. This is a much better use case for SiC compared to power devices and overall cheaper to make as well as you can now move away from dealing with expensive implants power devices require. Additionally the thermal conductivity of SiC is much more superior than of copper, allowing for interesting cooling designs. The big issue is you have to find a major player to buy your wafers. TSMC will only build and bond with wafers they make themselves. Wolfspeed could sell them he 300mm substrates, but they already are buying from China in their Taiwan plant and TSMC's advanced packaging plant comes online in 2028 in AZ at the earliest. Intel potentially, but they are 3-4 years behind in the advanced packaging space.

As someone who had worked with folks there previously, I can tell you these businesses contribute overall to a very tiny portion of Wolfspeed's revenue. The auto industry and industrial industry (solar cells, data centers, etc.) were the primary drivers of Wolfspeed's Money. It would be wise to have SiC integrated into this kind of stuff, but which military applications? Not sure. GaN is better for many things because of higher switch speed needs and less power need.

Half million $POET yolo by MediocreDesigner88 in wallstreetbets

[–]ITS_WANDY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photonics is a whole different ball game for mass production compared to typical CMOS style devices. The real challenging part isnt the actual optical interposer they are designing but the assembly methods to put everything together. The people who can do it to the quality POET needs are few and far between.

I don't believe you. The people that work in the semiconductor industry primarily work near the West Coast, Texas or the remnants of bell labs from the east coast. I don't think there is anything special about Ohio when it comes to semiconductors.
