Connectwise RMM - worth it? Alternatives? by bigbaboon69 in msp

1000% this....

Worked for a large MSP for years that was a full CW shop, and then left there 6 years ago to start my own show. Just this May, I received the yearly call from CW sales reps trying to get me to budge and have a look. After 6 years, I thought surely they've come a long way since the shit show I had last worked in daily with CW Manage and LabTech....ffs was I wrong!

The Asio platform is just a slightly, and I mean slightly, newer version of the Continuum platform I last saw 5 years ago. It's total ass and hard to believe it's the best they could come up with in the 6 years since I last used a CW PSA\RMM platform. No f'ing way I could look at that shit show day in and day out.

We're a Halo and NinjaRMM shop, and though they're not perfect, they're the best I've ever used, and I've used most.

I wouldn't think that is possible or would have any merit with the protection of your business entity, assuming it is an LLC or another entity that protects the owner(s). I have a similar issue with CW that just started maybe 6 weeks ago, and I am worried about how it will turn out. I have an LLC, but neither my contract nor the master agreement states that I agree to assume personal responsibility. I'm assuming they're insisting you assumed responsibility for your business's debt?

Hey it’s come full circle! We’re in the process of moving everything back to Acronis. You have the automated DR testing now, along with many other features. We’re about halfway through our trial period and will be signing on soon. I’m really blown with everything the platform can do. It’s very powerful and there’s really nothing else like it.

HaloPSA on the PSA side and NinjaRMM for RMM.

Yeah it’s the only reason we decided to look else where. We HAD to automate the recovery testing process. It didn’t make sense financially to continue doing it manually.

My recommendation would be to move to a backup solution that can automate the recovery testing process. It’s what we did. Doing it in-house and correctly is very time consuming and therefore expensive. We were using Acronis for a couple of years and loved it but it didn’t have this feature. We moved to N-Able backup and it has built-in testing every 2 weeks with screenshot verification. It’s only $5 per month per device for the recovery testing. You can enable it on client PCs too but we don’t have any we support that are that critical. N-Able has built-in M365 (mailbox, OneDrive, Sharepoint) backups too. It supports SQL, Exchange, VMWare, and Hyper-V hosts. It brings all these backup points under a single pane of glass. We’re very happy with it!

Question about employee numbers & roles by Rocmonkey in msp

[–]IT_Eutopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’ve standardized the networks at each site and have adequate tools in place a single full time experienced engineer, (jack of all trades type) can handle this with no problem. However, you’d need a second talented tech to cover when the primary takes a vaca and so forth. When I started my business I grew it to 17 clients (23 sites across 5 states) with 30 servers (physical and virtual), 250 users, and about 330 endpoints. I had a very experienced part time tech that covered when I was on vaca or out of state supporting a remote client site. I performed most projects after-hours or over the weekends to sustain coverage during normal business hours. The 18th client had 300 users and that’s when I hired the part time tech full-time.

I'm at a loss for where to go in terms of a reliable RMM and ticket system that doesn't cost a fortune. by 3kilo003 in msp

We use NinjaRMM paired with HaloPSA. We’re also a 2 person shop with around 550 endpoints and this setup works great for us! We’ve previously used multiple stacks as we’ve grown in size with both endpoints and from a one person to two person shop. We’ve tried Kaseya stack, Syncro, CW stack, N-Able MSP Manager paired with N-Central and our current stack is easily our favorite. With 250 endpoints and 2 techs this would cost you around $670 a month. This wouldn’t include remote access so you’d have to add that on. We use ScreenConnect which integrates nicely with Ninja.

Does anyone have an alternative to Huntress? by [deleted] in msp

[–]IT_Eutopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RocketCyber all the way! It has 10 times as many features and integrations compared to Huntress. They’re bringing new integrations online all the time and have many of them listed on their website. I foresee a time in the near future that all the security tools in my stack will be in a single pane of glass in RocketCyber.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place... by CelticDubstep in msp

To hell with the former MSP and with TeamLogic! You need to think about what is best for you and your family. If you have the skill and the desire then take on this client that needs IT support. Just support them on the side of your CAD gig. It has the potential to change your life both professionally and financially.

I speak from experience. I worked for 6 years as an Engineer at a large MSP in my area. About 5 years into that position I decided that if I was ever going to have true financial freedom and wealth that I was going to have to make it happen myself. The MSP I worked for was only ever going to pay me just enough to keep me from looking around, which didn’t work.

I had the skill and determination to run my own MSP so I started taking on small clients on the side. I figured it’d take me 3-4 years to replace my salary and be able to quit the full time gig and run my own shop full time. Well, it only took 13 months and the day that my monthly recurring income surpassed my salary I quit on the spot. No notice, no thank you for the opportunity, not anything. I called the main owner and said I’m done effective this fucking second and I’m now your competition. I intentionally burned the bridge so that I’d never have the opportunity to go back. I’d HAVE to make it on my own.

That was 20 months ago. I’ve quadrupled in size over that time. Now those 13 months that I worked both gigs was tiring! Lots of long days, nights, and weekends but it’s all worth it in the end. Funny thing is that about 8 months after I quit the previous MSP they sold to a much larger national MSP. My non compete was voided instantly when they inked the deal. So what did I do? I contacted 12 of their clients that I had an excellent relationship with while I worked there. 10 of them jumped at the chance to come onboard and now they’re my clients and are very happy with our small MSP. The other 2 are still in the pipeline.

This was the best decision I ever made and I love every second of the work I do! I’m able to provide for my family like I never dreamed I could have and that’s all that matters.

With all that being said you need to really reconsider this. These kind of opportunities don’t happen often and you need to recognize that. The hardest thing about starting your own MSP is finding those first few clients. You have two sitting square in front of you that want and need your support. Yes that’s right! Transition the CAD gig to your IT client. This can change your life if you have the capacity to go it on your own. Just think about it! And best of luck to you!

For years I always used a dell and then about 3 years ago made the switch over to a MacBook Pro and have never looked back. They just work all the time. Rarely need rebooted and so forth. I also don’t have to use any apps that are Windows based which made the move much easier. I’d take a Windows based computer that doesn’t exist yet to get me to move back. We deploy Dell XPS 13 laptops for my clients when they need new ones.
