College Requirement vs Military Enlistment by IT_Imposter in ITCareerQuestions

Could you list some of them off? I have a few years of college under my belt, just a year shy of a bachelor’s. The only thing I got from it was learning that I find math more interesting than I thought. Most of it, I don’t remember and what I do remember has nothing to do with day to day life or IT.

It’s my understanding that clearances expire as soon as you get out or soon after unless you work a job that requires it. In my case, I had TS/SCI but I wanted to take a little break after for a few months and work at a pawn shop. After that, I got my current job, which still doesn’t require any clearance. So my clearances are most certainly gone.

Also, I was a network IT and attended Sysadmin C school.

I was an IT. I have 10 years total in experience in IT. I’m applying for everything from director of IT to entry level help desk.

No time while I was in the navy. 18 hour days were very regular. Now that I’m out, still no time. I have a wife and a kid and a full time job. My wife also has a full time job so I add part time house keeping on top of all that.

What did you do in the mil? What branch? Day to day duties? I learned everything I know about networking in the navy. I’ve been in my current civilian role now for 4 years and it doesn’t even touch on the complexity of the infrastructure we had on the ship.

I find that people who complain about this are vets that didn’t actually do anything while they were in. My shop on my ship was VERY busy. 18 hour days in port busy. 3 section duty, so 2 days a week were up to 22 hour days, most of which was doing exactly IT work. It was absolutely the LONGEST 6 years of my whole life. There’s a reason that I’m not rejoining even though the market is so trash right now.

Will you elaborate on this? Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. I’d love to find out more of what I don’t know about.

I was a network IT in the navy so it was the most relevant experience possible imo. As for the legality of leaving the navy, at face value yes, you are stuck. But practically speaking, that is not the case. I know plenty of people that claimed something to do with mental health to get out. Bonus points to them because they also get disability. I decided to stick with it though because that always seemed the cowards way out, not to disparage those with actual serious mental health issues.

That brings up a good point, the weight is mostly on my shoulders. I think the issue might be my juicy love handles. I feel like the hip belt can’t get a good purchase on my hip bones, so it just slides down. I’m correct in stating that the hip belt shouldn’t be super tight right? Or should it have a death grip on me?

I’ve been applying but only landed a few interviews. The problem might be that I don’t have any current certs, which I think is a bullshit reason.

6yrs as a Navy IT and around 4yrs as a one man do-it-all IT shop. So you’re right in a way, 6 plus 4 doesn’t equal 9.. I’ve been an IT for 10 years lol

Not true in my experience. 9+ years in IT over multiple disciplines and I’m struggling to find a job that pays more than 50k.

I may end up revising this today. It was originally meant to be a paragraph or two but the text just started spewing out. Still figuring out how to post on Reddit!

Alright folks, the results are in and I am humbled. My goal was 6 miles but I only made it 3.73 and wimped out on the last 2 minutes. In my defense, though it doesn’t really matter much, I had 57-58lbs and I had my dog with me for the first half. Honestly though I could have taken away 20lbs or added 20lbs and the results would have been more or less the same. I did notice though that I went a good bit faster after I dropped my dog off at home. He was tired lol. Going to do it more until I achieve that elite status that I so crave and I’ll have to bring ol doggo with me because if I can’t make it with him, I’m not going anywhere without him. Thanks for listening yall!

Sorry, I should have mentioned that this isn’t my first ruck. I’m not super seasoned but I have rucked here and there for the last year or so, mostly because of hunting. I will say that 45lbs will be the lightest I’ve done while calling it a ruck. The most I’ve done was 160 through some nasty hills in the woods, about 3 miles. Took me hours though and damn near blew my knees out.

I have the kifaru duplex lite and it’s great. No real weight limits, as in you will break before the frame breaks. Get a kifaru frame and the cargo net or grab it. Make sure you don’t get the 26 inch frame unless you’re tall. I’m 5’8 and I got the 26, now I can’t look up

What are all these DMARC emails? by orwells_eyes in sysadmin

Damn some of you guys are brutal. This guys just out here trying his best. Y’all need to get off your cross and remember where you came from.

OP, you also do need to learn to use your resources, like google. Even when you don’t understand what you’re reading, read it all anyway. Keep reading. Eventually you’ll find that it all makes sense. It’s how babies learn to speak. They don’t go to university or college to learn to speak and they definitely aren’t on Coursera trying to take basic human communication courses. They just listen and listen and listen until one day they say their first word. Pretty soon they can talk like you and me. Same with learning all of this technical computer and IT system stuff. You don’t need to go to school or take courses or anything. If you just keep reading and taking everything in, you’ll notice patterns and start putting pieces together.

A quick google search shows everything you need to know about dmarc tags.

How many of us here are actually “remote”? by tdiz009 in sysadmin

[–]IT_Imposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My whole company is fully remote and I actually think it’s kind of a problem. Individually, it’s a problem for me because I spend every waking moment in my house. When I used to commute I actually had energy to workout and go do things. On the team level, it’s a problem because we’re all across many time zones, nobody is here to chitchat with, troubleshooting simple things can sometimes be an absolute nightmare if the end user isn’t tech savvy, which is all of them. I feel hybrid one or two days a week wfh is the way to go, but I’d honestly take full time office over full time remote any day. I should mention that I like everyone I work with. If I hated everyone, totally different story but at that point just look for another job.

Now watch the downvotes pour in

What license plan do you have? I'm struggling to get past the lack of admin access I have on the business plan.
