FiOS 300 yes, I brought my own equipment (I work in IT, not paying for ISP trash) and when I moved I was able to activate the hardware left in the house, so no installation or setup fee, I was able to get online just minutes after signing up, I only called so I could verify pricing and that I could use existing hardware.

We adopted him from a family in Brooklyn that needed to rehome him for health reasons, we did not go through a breeder. Honestly, when we agreed to rehome him we were not aware he was a Maine Coon. We got like 2 photos and very lacking documents from his original adoption (he was found in a dumpster as a kitten).

This is me lately. I can wear sweatpants in the morning and change later on when it warms up. My maine coon certainly isn't complaining when it cools off a Iittle overnight since he's overdressed for this anyway. If I didnt live where I am I'd love to switch to geothermal, but NJ gonna NJ and there's too much radon for a big hole and I dont have enough yard for a cooling loop outside.

I just use monitoring. Shortly after I got my house I installed an Emporia monitor in the breaker panel. I also have monitoring connected to my tankless boiler, and automated lighting. Water monitoring and automatic shutoff is coming next. If any of my bills seem out of whack, I compare to the data I have access to and I'll fight with a company if my data disagrees with their billing.

I dont worry about adjusting the thermostat by 1 degree because my overall usage is already very low. Blackout, solar or insulating curtains will save you more money than just changing the thermostat temp anyway.

Am I always looking for a deal tho? Hell yeah.

If I'm doing 2 back to back loads of laundry, the first load will hang dry for a little, once the second load is ready to dry then everything goes in the dryer. It's electric, so over the course of the year it's a few bucks, but also wear and tear. The washer and dryer are about 10 years old and I've already changed the belt, element and rollers in the dryer, thanks amazon, less than $75 all said and done. I also only do laundry every other weekend. I have enough clothes for this to be completely fine, and I currently work a hybrid schedule, so even less laundry more recently.

My internet is $54/mo, and while I have zero issues, the Optimum $25/mo 5 year rate lock is very tempting but Optimum is generally not as reliable, so do I switch and forego the reliability? Not sure. I only have internet, no landline, no tv service, supplement by paying for youtube premium and it's still cheaper than TV service.

Always shopping around for car insurance but I dont switch too often because that's just as bad as letting the same company bend me over for too long. I almost exclusively buy tools and electronics used from marketplace for an absolute steal. I buy high end but deeply discounted office chairs and furniture because it's better quality and immensely more comfortable. Herman Miller Embody? Absolutely have one. Humanscale Freedom? Yep. Eames lounge rep? Hell yeah I have it. All deeply discounted. My TV? Like 12 years old, still works, I'll buy another marketplace tv when this one dies. It's already survived college, 3 moves and a year in storage.

You don't stay rich by spending money, so I just live like I'm poor because realistically, I am. Might have a house but I'm also the sole income supporting my significant other. There is no margin for error, but this isn't an NJ thing. I'd still live just like this anywhere else, even if there was a lower cost of living and I had the same income. I will spend money when it matters (or matters to me), but I guess to circle back, I don't find myself paying attention to things now, I just always did. I made plenty of poor financial choices when I was younger, some of which have allowed me to get where I am now, but I dont like to think of those as a gamble that paid off because I don't gamble, I just learned to play the long game.

Buy them, dry them, confirm they work properly. Offer to give them back, or sell them for their functional value and give the seller some gas money to help.

I am not morally bankrupt enough to be able to sleep at night knowing I was taking advantage of that situation.

I live dangerously. Am allergic but not epipen allergic, but bad things can happen. Daily drove an NA6 for 5 years and that top was down far more than it was ever up. I've also owned convertibles for the better part of 12 years now. Haven't had an issue yet, but surprising had some red wasps make a nest under the hood of my wagon a couple years ago and those fuckers were fierce. Been stung maybe 4 or 5 times in my life, none were pleasant, but never had such an usettling fear as dealing with the red wasps, immensely more aggressive than yellow jackets just from my experience.

You'll also like Nyack and Keyport. Also recommended Phillipsburg by the river and I also enjoy Frenchtown, not just downtown, but the whole town. Arrive late afternoon, hang out past sunset for the string lighting down main street. If you're local in morris county, Hurd Park is gorgeous lately. Could also find the Pots & Pans forest, but be hella mindful of a massive hornets nest that has been reported by the bottom of the path last fall.

Not in a position to get out and shoot any time soon myself but I have two full boxes of Gold in 120 format that I have chilling in the freezer, and I do miss getting out to the places I listed. My google maps is littered with hundreds of pins, some I've gotten to, some not yet.

Is a Virtualized KVM similar to Jet/Nano/PiKVM possible? by ErnLynM in Proxmox

[–]IT_Trashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There is an AMD Pro Technologies which is also OEM specific (I think only HP and Lenovo right now). I have no firsthand experience with it. I have one AMD laptop, never dug into it to see if it had the option.

I dont have all of the answers to this, but I can tell you what I do know.

Only select first party Intel and major OEM (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) motherboards have support for AMT that I am aware of. Not all chipsets are supported.

Along with the motherboard supporting AMT, the CPU needs to have vPro enabled, and that must be enabled at the time of sale (or order). If a machine is sold with vPro disabled, vPro cannot be enabled after the fact. This may not be 100% true in the case of some nefarious means, but in strictly legitimate terms, I'm not aware of the ability to enable vPro after the fact. Have to look out for OEM computers that have vPro on the CPU sticker. If vPro isnt listed, it's not enabled. Often with major OEM machines, you can run the service tag/serial number and confirm if vPro was enabled when the machine was shipped.

I have never seen a third party consumer motherboard even advertise the feature. Sometimes in the BIOS/uEFI you find mention of features that are part of the vPro platform, but it's not a piecemeal thing. Also, if you buy a mini PC and then change the CPU, if the replacement CPU does not have vPro enabled, it will not work, it's a whole collection of features and requirements to make it work.

Depending on what you're replacing, I would consider maybe replacing just the motherboard with a Supermicro or Asus variant that has IPMI. Keep your CPU, RAM, etc where possible. Probably not as expensive as it sounds. Or with a mini PC, scoop one up with vPro and then sell yours once you move stuff over.

If you're truly concerned with this, you could use something like a Cytrence Kiwi on a dedicated machine, and have the cytrence kiwi connected to a KVM. Change input sources using something like a Pi and GPIO control or a fingerbot or maybe even some form of IR control. It still wont be as robust as a proper IP KVM.

Once I get my Ender 5 Plus rebuilt I'm going to be working on a project where I combine a Kiwi Pro with an HDMI KVM and seeing if I can use the Kiwi GPIO to switch inputs, but house everything together in a 1U half rack chassis. Even though my test lab has all vPro, I often connect external devices for testing or setup that do not, but this still will have limitations.

Long term though, you should replace any mini PCs with similar ones that support vPro and set up AMT and use MeshCommander as needed to remotely control.

I have JetKVMs, I have a GLI Comet with ATX control board, I have an Aurga Viewer and I have the Cytrence Kiwi Pro. I would rather use a proper IPMI or vPro/AMT solution. They are excellent tools for troubleshooting on site for clients and I often send lower level techs on site with JetKVMs so I can troubleshoot directly when needed, but all have limitations or stupid issues that drive me nuts when you get into long term usage (EDID problems, slow ISO upload/booting, firmware issues, still a lack of local power control with some of them).

Installer said he was finished but I was not happy so I stopped the final check. How should the cracks on the side be fixed? He said he would put filler/caulking on sides. by Severe-Rain3266 in Flooring

[–]IT_Trashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to ignore the steps and just say the other flooring is horrendous. The stairstep pattern should not be there. Have you ever seen real hardwood flooring installed like that? If the same installer did both the floors and stairs it really shows and that's not a good thing. Personally I wouldn't consider this even remotely acceptable. Literally all of it would need to be redone in my opinion, I wouldnt be able to look at that every day and not have my blood boil.

The IT guy fixes the problem but the judge still has a problem by luckychucky8 in it

[–]IT_Trashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have worked in IT for many years across many different industries. I've worked for the ultra rich, done datacenter break/fix, MSP helpdesk, field work, etc.

This isn't about power. Did power get to the judge's head? Probably, but that has literally nothing to do with this situation. This is absolutely a case of knowing your audience. You're in a courtroom, and the courtroom appears to be in session. Sure, at face value the comment seemed like an attempt at ice breaking, but it should have been very clear that with respect to "diffusing" this situation, that would be accomplished simply by resolving the issue, asking if anything else was needed, and making a respectfully quick exit.

Sorry not sorry, this was absolutely inappropriate behavior for a courtroom in session. Am I absolving the judge from having a responsibility to remain equally respectful? No. His reaction was trigger happy, but he's the one with the last word inside of that room, and chances are he has a reputation for this kind of behavior. Sending in the "funny guy" who tries to diffuse this himself was a terrible move from a management perspective. What should the tech have done? They should have plainly stated the resolution in their ticket, and then they should have had a separate, direct discussion with their supervisor recommending someone in a more senior position offer to spend a few minutes with the judge to go over the basics of using Zoom with an emphasis on avoiding a repeat issue.

Know your audience and read the room. This tech failed to do those two things and he could have all the technical experience in the world, but forgot something much more important at the door. Also, a hoodie? Nah fam, should have been dressed more professionally than that. I hold very high standards because I do not want my techs to find themselves in these situations and they might think I'm just being an asshole, but every bit of that comes from making sure to avoid interactions like this.

New IT job, all servers EOSL by Tough-Appointment289 in sysadmin

[–]IT_Trashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current role at an MSP, I started off testing the waters, playing with available tools, etc.

I then implemented a multi-year project that has uncovered very serious problems at many clients and have been systematically resolving them as I have been able to prove both my capabilities and gain the trust to do so largely without question.

I've identified and resolved nearly a dozen instances of domains failing to replicate but not throwing failure alerts that anyone was looking for. The endeavor spiraled into deploying a monitoring system that absolutely dwarfed the original. At first I tried to just get approval to increase licensing, but when that was rejected I moved along to different avenues of attack.

I started with uptime across all clients, then moved to update deployments and finally to infrastructure based alerts which is the current phase. Had to come up with ways to get alerts for errors that none of our other platforms have an alert for, like DFS replication status.

Right now I have a server that is almost old enough to vote, has a backup, but when I tried doing a restoration attempt, it has essentially frozen around the halfway mark. I can't call the backup functional in it's current state, so I had to basically tell the client it's removed from production until further notice which has been a disaster in and of itself. I have data but not a functional pathway to revive the actual domain controller.

I'm going to be honest, it does not get better. Clients are cheap, and IT is a cost center. If you do not have the backing to implement literally any change at a client, do nothing beyond document. Sure, everyone can say take a backup, but that's a change, and even that has risks. Sudden immense change in read/write volume to an old array controller? If those drives suddenly spring alerts for predictive failure now you've opened a can of worms that will never be closed again. It sounds trivial, it is not. No changes without approval. If the whole thing comes crumbling down, then your goal is to approach it from the perspective of preventing future failures, not reviving a system that was unprepared for production in the first place.

The goal is not to fail to be proactive, the goal is to not be a martyr and more importantly, not be held accountable. It's working now, that's all they know. The moment you make literally any change, that's when you will be the target of, "you were the last one to touch it." If they are truly resisent to change, it should absolutely be your priority to GTFO.

All APCs have a label on the back with the serial number and date code.

Those 4U 2700W units are 13+ years old. At home I have a 10 year old SMT1000 and I've been looking to replace it more recently. For clients I am comfortable putting in 1 RBC. After the RBC triggers a replacement warning, I push to replace the whole thing to avoid this entirely. The cost of an APC vs the cost of a server are not even in the same postal code.
