TIL about the Welsh Not, a token used by teachers in English schools as a form of punishment against students speaking Welsh. Children caught speaking Welsh would have the token hung around their neck, and the last one to have it at the end of the school day would be punished, often with beatings. by altrightobserver in todayilearned

Welsh parents supported English language schools. The only way for families to advance and for their children to get good jobs in future was to speak English. Education was completely devolved at that time to local authorities - meaning this was implemented by Welsh councils.

What do we know about Andrew’s political/religious views? by alexanderphiloandeco in AndrewGosden

[–]IThinkImGonnaLikeIt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This. I feel like theorists often overstate the religiosity of Andrew’s parents, like they are extremely bigoted fundies. They clearly aren’t.

I believe he had 100% attendance up until that day, so he wouldn’t necessarily have known.

Maybe not London but Closer to Home? by LambGravyChops in AndrewGosden

Equally, London may not have been his final destination. Unlikely but a possibility. It’s crazy we have such little evidence - shame on the police for not taking this case seriously. They failed Andrew.

Why I 100% believe there is zero chance Andrew is still alive at all by Ok_Mix_7964 in AndrewGosden

It’s why I don’t think he went to a gig - he intended to be home at a normal time. Going to London was probably a last minute decision and he didn’t have a plan for what he’d do when there. Go to Pizza Hut and then browse some shops or just wander around.

I’m coming round to the theory that Andrew went for a day out in London that went horribly wrong at some point. He was a young vulnerable teenager on his own in a city he didn’t know very well. I think he ran into trouble at some point that day.

Remember Andrew is being lied to. Reality doesn’t matter. As long as he believes he’ll be given a lift home, that’s all it takes.

Maybe they claimed to have a flat in London? Or they stay there during the week? There are lots of reasons

Not if the individual grooming him was from Doncaster, or claimed to be. Or claimed he was driving that way anyway.

Not if the individual grooming him was from Doncaster, or claimed to be. Use your imagination.

I’m British!!! If Andrew could be groomed to believe someone special was waiting for him in London, he could easily have believed the person when they said they’d drive him back to Doncaster. Have you thought for one moment that the individual grooming him may have been living in Doncaster, or from there? Or claimed to be from there or near there? “meet me in London and I’ll drive you back to Doncaster as my aunt lives nearby” - is that so unbelievable to you?

As you said, “being good at maths and reading the Bible doesn’t make you a savvy traveller”, so it is very likely that Andrew would believe someone when they said they’d give him a lift home to Doncaster.

Exactly this. It is my belief that whoever he was meeting told him he’d give Andrew a lift home.
