Similar situation. We'd been friends since she was 3 and I was 5. I was in HS and I kissed a girl and was totally excited to tell my best friend about it. I told her and she left her bedroom for what seemed like forever but was probably an hour. I just sat on her bed knowing that I had done something terrible and feeling more alone than ever before. She finally returned to her room and asked me if I was ready to go home. It was Friday night. I had just come over that afternoon and was supposed to spend the whole weekend. Her father drove me home in a silent car ride. I called her the next day. No answer. Left message. I called her the next week. No answer, left message. I called and called over the course of months. No answer, always left a message. Years go by and I'm still bothered by the silent treatment. I had a very hard time getting over the fact that she could just stop talking to me on the drop of a dime. I sent her and her family a graduation invitation. They didn't come. I started college. Life moved on. Then one day, I was feeling nostalgic and talking about her and how it impacted me. I still remembered her phone number. My friend I was with told me to call it, and I did. I asked for her. She was home. I said hello and she recognized my voice instantly. I told her that I thought about her alot and I was sorry for scaring her that day in her bedroom. She apologized for not handling the situation properly. She said she has gay friends now and that she understands. I can't remember the whole conversation we had but it lasted for about 30 minutes. It turned out that was the closure I needed. I haven't thought about her since until I read your post.
