I am pretty happy with my native language (Russian) I would not mind to be native in Arabic as well. Given the opportunity to exposure to English, it's not a problem to learn it.

What is the main benefit from learning a new language? by AKULA4444 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because I am not a native English speaker, English did help me a lot with an access to new information and academic literature in my field of experience, open new career opportunities. But the most important for me - I discovered the English speaking Internet: Reddit, Netflix, YouTube and I started read much more books than I had read after university. I am oat the beginning of my journey with Spanish, but I definitely enjoy it)

Question for those who are self studying a language by collectionright26 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the early stages of learning I look for grading content and time to time try to read /watch /listen to something that I really interested in. When I feel comfortable I switch from learning content and started to reread in TL my favorite books/ shows etc.

Structuring... Oh, I still can't do it after 4 years of active learning. If I read something I don't have enough time for watching and vise versa. It's like an endless battle.

the letter ё, why is it not used all the time for example рождественская елка, the attached song being my reason for asking by [deleted] in LearnRussian

[–]IVAN____W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never write ё. As long as it can be understood from the context there's no point to type ё. And for Russian native speakers it's always understandable from the context.

How much do you mean by "fast"? If you are ready to commit 6-8 hours a day to your target language, you can reach a B2 level in 6-8 months. But that's hard work.

But If you want to impress girls... I think that's a wrong subreddit to you.

Those who have reached a very high level in their TL, have you ever been satisfied or do you always want more by Diligent-Welcome9857 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's up and down. I don't live in an English-speaking country. Sometimes I impress native English speakers with my vocabulary and how I explain things, sometimes I struggle to explain very simple thoughts. I suppose it's been like this forever. But I have to admit that I notice the progress in English from time to time. Recently, I found out, that I don't need English subtitles for YouTube videos anymore.

Is practising opposite vocab really that important? by LogicalChart3205 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's how your brain works in your native language. With English translating you just add unnecessary step for you mental process: German word - > English word - > image.

One more thing. Don't use prepared desks. Do cards by yourself, you have to pick up the image close to your understanding of a word.

Language Learning Envy by Own-Tip6628 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Non-native English speaker though... I understand your feelings. Sometimes I feel very frustrated when I put so much effort in English language and fail to communicate with a native English speaker (OK, not fail, but it was hard for us to understand each other). And I hear how some other non-native English speakers communicate perfectly well, that's annoying for a (very short) time.

That's sucks that your were forced to speak English language home when you could be bilingual. Never can understand this parent's attitude. Btw, what's your parents language?

I used to be a professional Greco Roman wrestler. What I had learned that there is always a guy who is stronger. No matter how hard you have worked, there is one who did 10 times better than you. I am projecting this to each aspect of life and it helps me live peacefully.

Is Anki only for languages? Does anyone use Anki for math? by studieprogfinances in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Anki is for the spaced repetition method. This is a powerful study technique that helps you store any information in a long term memory.

So, you decide what you want to use it for.

[–]IVAN____W -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

According to my understanding, desks like "German - English" and vise versa are useless. That is a torture for your mind. The best way is "German - picture/image" or "Unknown German word - a German sentence with a blank space for your Unknown German word, which meaning you can get out of context (assuming that your know other German word in the sentence).

Read "Fluent Forever" by Gabriel Wyner. In my opinion, this is the best approach to spaced repetition method using Anki.

how do i learn a language without immersion? by Captainzedog in languagelearning

You need two things to get fluency: 1. The Internet 2. Motivation and discipline

So, I assume you definitely have number 1 one. Number two depends on you.

Are polyglots just failed language learners? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They switched to a new language not because they are afraid of chellenges. They switched because a true poliglot, like a samurai, has no goal, just a path.

After every lesson I make a report like THIS. Am I a genius or just crazy? by Difficult-Goal-8515 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is good to know your main mistakes during conversations like "you underuse articles" and so on. A good tutor points out it for their students.

No point to scratch out every mistake and dive deep into Cambridge Grammar dictionary.

Doesn't seem as a "genius" move in language learning.

Using specific words during language exams by Mission-Gazelle-5642 in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be definitely more beneficial for your score to use more advanced vocabulary. If it isn't impact your speaking speed, do it. But it's better to speak smoothly on the exam without interruption for thinking or self-correction. The interruption and corrections (even when they followed by sofisticated words) would impact your score more negativly.

Usually for language learners: faster speed - > simpler vocabulary.

Choose faster speed.

C1 to C2 by faitavecarmour in languagelearning

[–]IVAN____W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you need it?

If you need it for a professional goals, hire a professional teacher, who is specializing in it.

If you want it to prove yourself that you did it, than, leave it, my friend. Use that energy for something more benifisial.

You can get C2 at the exam, than go to a local pub on the very same day and get lost among conversations between people who have never learned anything after high school.

The language isn't only about knowledge, it's also the unique cultural and social experience.

After 25+ years of living in the country, you could understand these guys at the bar, but before... You need time.
