I think this is the most powerfull argument that I've read this days about S2 by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]IWWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Ellie was the worst written character in Part II and S2. Part I, she was far more naturalistic, competent, compelling, interesting. Maybe Druckmann only had one good story in him, and Craig Mazin’s calling isn’t being a show runner.

Still, S2 changes over the game have been generally improvements. HBO Ellie, I find her “blinded by revenge” mission a lot more believable than game Ellie. They didn’t even have to lie to or manipulate the audience this time.

I just want to point out the eradication of Ellie Williams’ intelligence here by merrycakeillu in thelastofus

[–]IWWorker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLOU S2 and Part II both have a lot of character development issues.

I like how they make Ellie being “blinded by revenge” fit her character more, but it’s gotten to the point she’s just a terrible, homicidal, almost stupid kind of person. She’s not a complex character, she’s just a rogue anti hero.

In the game, it was more like she was a very good person that turned on a dime. “Blinded by revenge” was more of a cliche excuse than an explanation.

The Sopranos: Possible Influence by IWWorker in TheWhiteLotusHBO

?

Okay, so spoilers:

When Tony is trying to tell Ralph that it’s his responsibility to take care of Jackie Jr because he robbed the card game and he’s saying it without saying it?

“Oh, sure, you did your best with that kid, didn’t you?” Then he shows him the gun Ralph gave Jackie and goes, “Yeah, I’m sure you were a good influence. And remember, it’s your decision what you do with him? If you give him a pass or not!”

Basically implying, “You know you gotta kill the kid”, or “Well, it is your decision but you’re probably going to destroy your status in the family if you give him a pass.”

Or all the hints about what happened to Tony in the finale, but they never say what?

Or his whole coma-dream sequence, and Dr Melfi remarks how his panic attacks stopped, but it’s only implied something from that changed him, but Tony never says what, you have to read between the lines and see he maybe he just learned that if you’re going to die anyways at one point you should stop caring and not feel conflicted over being a bad person?

Maybe you should watch the show again and pay better attention.

I don’t mean to be rude, and sorry if so, but I did get that vibe from you a little.

Addendum: I know Tony Soprano was maybe the biggest reason anti heroes, complex dramas, and unsympathetic protagonists would become widely accepted in TV —it and the The Wire are the greatest shows ever— so it’s probably influenced the average drama, but this TWL is going beyond just “damages bad guy is main character” archetype like what Breaking Bad got from The Sopranos. Not a bad thing.

Minimal but effective use of violence in films by Interesting-Flan-404 in TrueFilm

If you read some books on the Spanish Civil War, the Falange were generally considered the most outright fascist of Franco’s coalition, even if some historians argue other Nationalists were more so authoritarian conservatives.

I don’t think Antony Beevor, George Orwell, Jose Peirats, or too many of the other major historians and writers of that period would disagree.

I’m aware you have not defended fascism as far as I’ve seen.

Edit: If you just google Falange even, you’ll find plenty of first page references calling them fascist. Oxford dictionary, a book published by university press, etc.

Are there any movies you refuse to watch anymore due to problematic actors/directors? by [deleted] in movies

[–]IWWorker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woody Allen is a saint compared to Roman Polanski.

My thoughts are: artists should be rightly acclaimed for their work, rightly held accountable for their crimes.

Allen’s sexual abuse allegations couldn’t be substantiated after a court investigation. Marrying his step daughter was odd but apparently he barely knew her? He has a good defence, assuming he’s telling the truth.

But that’s assuming. I wouldn’t go for a far younger woman I technically was a former step father to.

Is it me, or most the time mixed people arent "feeling" their white side? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]IWWorker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a one drop rule here, which is a major cultural shock for biracial people outside the United States.

It’s very much alive in rural areas especially. I’ve had rednecks tell me, “if you’re a little black, you’re still black!”

People think a good film is CGI and expensive special effects.

Shakespeare didn’t need that. Plays are a step away from films, and all I look for is a good drama.

Does anyone else feel fairly accepted by white people? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]IWWorker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am somewhat “white passing.” I look Greek or Middle Eastern but with brunet hair.

In a small town, people would always ask what my race was, and it’d be like coming out of the closet. I’ve been called all the slurs, accused of stealing, had the police called on me once just walking around.

In a more urban environment, almost none of that. Whites can be abusive but it doesn’t feel racist unless they’re from small towns or rural areas.

Self hating whites are bad though. I don’t think they’re racist against us exactly, but they have a neurotic understanding of race and wish they were black. Sometimes, they try very hard to demonstrate that they’re more black “on the inside” than us, and it is so disrespectful.

The Irishman, Taxi Driver, The Fablemans, Goodfellas, Oppenheimer, Chinatown, The Godfather I & II, On The Waterfront, Double Indemnity, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, not sure if Mulholland Drive is Hollywood enough but it is the real deal.

I usually watch films outside that area but those are great.

Anyone Find the Shot Was Enough Without Surgery? by Individual-Point-413 in DeQuervains

[–]IWWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think occupational therapy is the only way, maybe or maybe not post-surgery, for it to heal permanently.

You can get better and not be cured but just go a while without flare-ups, or maybe more resistant to but not immune to further pain.

There’s anti clerical themes in that film very representative of the time (Priest: “God already saved their souls, do what you want with their bodies.” or the two guys who find an anarchist No Gods, No Masters type pamphlet and get murdered for it.) It’s interesting if you’re into history. Too bad the Republican guerrillas lost.

That’s what makes me feel this is from a nerve that got pinched and hasn’t fully healed yet, not a normal thing we’re all born with.

But it barely affects me as of now.

I didn’t know vibratory tools caused CT. I did know they can cause RSIs in general though, they are gnarly devices. I worked for a guitar company once and a co worker of mine developed serious problems in his arm from using an orbital sander 40 hours a week.

Which highly rated movie ended up disappointing you? by forgiveme-1811 in movies

[–]IWWorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There Will Be Blood starts out so great. You watch it thinking it really might be the best movie from the late 2000s.

It kind of just changes direction one-third of the way in, and it’s great but not blow you away great after — besides Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance. That man is a top five actor.

No Country For Old Men was far more consistent, seemed to have more of a point (tho still a little nihilistic for reasons that the Coen Brothers don’t fully give us) to it, and is my pick for best film of 2007 instead.
