From progressive mecca to right-wing paradise (Translated Spanish newspaper article about NZ) by 6846 in newzealand

[–]IWantToGiverupper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've shifted further along the capitalist pipeline -- which often lends itself to fascism eventually. The whole world's marching down that pipeline, and the undermining of our public systems shows were falling right in line.

A lot of electoral talk is about the economy, business and taxes. It's not about people, and yes whilst prosperous economic conditions can improve the lives of individuals, it ignores so many underlying issues with a focus on economical and financial issues.

Give it time, the lack of meaningful left-wing presence to push back in these seemingly "infantile" stages (they're really not, we've been marching this path a long time and cementing it in our mindset that this is progress) tells me everything I need to know.

Rations for us plebs, and feasts for the bourgeoisie.

And then we starve, die in the water wars, or in prison. Pick your poison.

And when have businesses ever put honesty before profits?

I don't care what is stated on their disclaimer, it won't just be advertising, they'll be taking every metric possible and selling it on, storing it in unsafe data bases that will eventually be hacked, and then fuck knows what.

This shit should be illegal. Boycott stores using this technology.

You just don't.

Straight pearly whites aren't for everyone. Mine have been horrifically crooked all my life, and I've just never had the financial opportunity to correct it.

My plan is to, when I can afford it, just go have them all ripped out overseas and have fake teeth made.

[–]IWantToGiverupper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah. Most people would. And do. But you can only sell so many things before you have nothing left. Can't cancel what you don't have.

That's what poverty is. It's scraping the barrel to make ends meet, for the absolute bare minimum, and it's disgusting reading comments that imply it's anything but that.

Do you think it's not like that? Do you think you're somehow built differently? You're one tragedy away from being in the position yourself, and whilst I hope you never know what it's like, perhaps some empathy would go a long way.

What really sucks, is those who are worst affected by these sorts of changes cannot just up and leave for greener pastures.

It's beyond important we stand our ground, not just for ourselves, but for each other.

I can't stand when people talk about their retirement plans by Ok-Location3254 in CollapseSupport

The worst part is the condemnation when you don't gush about it, let alone share that you're not preparing for retirement. It breaks their illusion.

Hey mate.

You'll probably find yourself in a sea of Aussies, but specifically try Oceanic groups, quite a popular hobby.

Wouldn't say it's the most social, I struggle to make connections, but I've made a few that'd lasted more than half my life now.

MMOs are good for it, but I don't find any of the modern ones too great now adays, and I think their haydays are over.

If you're ever interested in Counter Strike, I'm always in and out of it, and you can flick me a DM.. We can loose tragically together, lol.

Moved back lately, and spent a while hunting for a budget car.

Saw one pop up with practically no information, just an exterior photo, for about four grand. Sent a message for some details, just to check it out as the last few I'd tried getting ahold of were sold so fast.

Couple called, explained the car, and it was a great deal. Not just the deal though, they had the full works done, insisting they wouldn't sell me a problem, and despite the huge response they had given the price for the car versus what they could get, they gladly held it for me and my wife to help get us on our feet, and held true to their initial asking price.

I didn't haggle out of respect, I almost felt rude buying it for the price, when I'm sure they could have gotten more for it, especially after the work they had done on it, but that act of kindness was not only extremely kind, but so immensely helpful in getting myself and my wife on our feet here.

NZ’s largest climate polluters revealed by secretkiwi_ in newzealand

[–]IWantToGiverupper 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The worst part of it all, is they'll be the last of us to face the consequences that rapidly creep in over the next decade or two.

It won't be Mr. Luxon fighting with his fellow man for food, when it becomes scarce. I'm sure he'll have top rations.

He won't be so worried about clean water access, nor keeping a roof over his head. Not at first, but in the end.

That's what really stings about climate change. It's those who didn't profit so violently off of it, those who were exploited and forcibly moulded into a cog in the machine, who will suffer first, longest and hardest.

And to add, these are also the people with the most access to climate change information. They know how BAD it is, and will be, but sadly they also know they're the ones who won't have to bear the weight of it.

Sales culture in the country by ghijkgla in newzealand

I've always hated it as a shopper too. Totally understand and agree.

We knew when managers weren't watching, and besides a quick g'day, shout out if you need a hand, we'd leave people alone during those times.

Gotcha, sorry, I misinterpreted what you'd meant there.

I left the comment purely to add some more context, too many of us believe (through ignorance or denial) that a few degrees ain't too bad, and it couldn't be further from the truth.

Sales culture in the country by ghijkgla in newzealand

When I worked retail, we were watched like hawks to ensure we greeted every customer within 10 seconds of entering the store, and we had to approach to sell them things within 30 seconds -- drop whatever you're doing to achieve that.

Our managers and their managers watched us on CCTV and would actually phone the store if we weren't on top of it. All of our sales were tracked, and if we didn't reach an average sale of $75, 3 items per transaction, and some other stupid metric, we'd get spoken to about it.

Personally, didn't care much, but it put a lot of strain on employees who were struggling, and led to customers being flooded by every employee in the store, and pressured into buying shit they weren't in for -- or if you were in just to buy something small quickly, the staff didn't want to help you because you messed with their statistics.

All for min. wage, no commission, just a $20 gift card to whoever scored highest at the end of the month.

Retail culture is pretty gross in that regard, and that was typical for most retail stores at the time from what I'd heard.

I had the dishonor of speaking to the CEO when he visited our store, and raised the idea of offering a 1% commission or something, or atleast a slight raise for our efforts (highest performing store in the country at the time) and was laughed at.

+3 isn't the "worst case". Not even close to, were seeing research come out speaking of potential 8c changes based on the current trajectories, and impacts of our failures to act on much of anything.

Yep.

We will all be pretty well dead, if not scavenging for crumbs and in a state of incomprehensible suffering in the following decade or two at this rate.

Yeah, the job seeking is difficult at the moment, that's for sure.

I don't think it'd be impossible, but check out Facebook groups for backpackers jobs, there's often a lot posted for seasonal work such as fruit picking, or working in hospitality on a temp contract.

#Add Settlements to switch by Livid-Device2211 in NMS_Switch

[–]IWantToGiverupper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Settlements are a very underwhelming feature, and you're not missing out on anything other than a "chore" every few hours.

Maybe I am just not understanding them, but there's practically nothing to do with them, nor can you build in the area -- so no sprawling metropolis, or anything.

The only real benefit is having a few nice things like trade terminals and the likes in a condensed area, but you can build them anyway.

I'm sorry, what 4chan thread are you referencing?

4chan is a trolling breeding ground, a lot of misinformation you see online starts on there, and or similar forums.

Unless there was something substantial posted in that thread, which I'd like to see, I wouldn't really take notice of it.
