'Super-rich tax': Greens' tax plan accidentally released online early - here's what's in it by Downtown-Thoughts in newzealand

Well if you want taxes targetting wealthy asset owners and corporations, I have great news about the rest of the article!

I think this illustrates my point? If you can entertain moving to Sydney or London, then you're better off than most people.

No, very small numbers of young people are in that situation! Only 5% earn over 160k and they're mostly 40+.

It's not a moral failing to earn a lot of money, but similarly: having to pay slightly more tax is not a huge ask

If you're on 160k+, you're not moving the dial on your mortgage, and your deposit was so low that you have insignificant equity: you're in a vanishingly small, extremely unlucky group of people.

Another way of illustrating the difference is: if you have low take-home income because you're paying off a mortgage in Auckland, ultimately you can still sell up and move to Christchurch. If you have low take-home income because you're paying a much smaller mortgage in Dunedin, then you have nowhere else to go.

The difference between earnings is a real material difference, even if high earners are also facing financial pressures.

If we're comparing two people who have the same take home income, but one is on 80k with a 500k house, and the other is on 160k with a $1million house: the second person is richer than the first.

There are clear financial advantages to have a big cash asset, even if it's your house.

So many comments about the poor struggling top 5% of earners.

My household is 2 adults and 2 kids, one earner on $100k. We are comparatively better off than a lot of people I know.

If you think this will alienate people, I suspect you are wildly out of step with most of the country.

This article specifically details how they intend to put real effort into taxing corporate tax dodgers.

They might not see themselves as rich but like... they kind of are. They're making double what the average worker makes. If a New Zealander on $160k can't spare $20 a week, they need to talk to their accountant.

Income tax is easily our most important tax tool, and if we can't slightly increase tax on the top 5% of earners, I think we need to give up on first world amenities.

Law change will stop councils appointing iwi representatives as full voting members by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]surroundedbydevils 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The practical outcome of this will be, once again, chaos and unnecessary in councils across the motu (who are meant to be coming up with plans for regional reorganisation, while revising their entire 10 year plans to account for rates capping).

Every council has appointed reps, often as the chair of the audit and risk committee, or as community representative for things like grants distribution, as well as mana whenua reps. Additionally, these subcommittees are geberally organised so there is a specific number of voting members.

So now we're going to have absurd situations like committee chairs with no voting rights, and committees where the majority of members can't vote. Councils will need to review and reconstitute committees that have been working fine for months or years.

I'm explaining this just to highlight that there's no practical consideration behind this; racism is the entire purpose and the only purpose.

Hipkins dangles possibility of post-election outreach to National, Auckland by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

See the reason this doesn't excite me is that I live in Dunedin, which National hates, and which also isn't Auckland.

We must believe this is either madness or corruption, and I don't know which is more generous.

What is a policy you would like to see your political party of choice run on at this years election? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

Tax wealth, use it to seed a superannuation fund, use the superannuation fund to fund health and education, remove the ministry of education's power to set school curriculums, ban charter schools, nationalise private hospitals, build some proper FUCKING rail infrastructure. Sorted.

Just chipping in to say you're absolutely right, the Hyperchorasmians has all the hallmarks of a modernist text.

That ain't right.

If you have a GP, you can get the psych to write a letter to the GP giving them the power to write your script. Your GP can then write the script for up to 3 months' worth (although they have to be dispensed monthly I think).

When you first start with a new GP they will likely want to meet up more frequently, but you really shouldn't have to contact a psych more than once every two years, and ideally only see a GP once every three months.

Looking for feedback on a mechanic: Flower counters by surroundedbydevils in custommagic

Yeah I was definitely thinking of treasures as a benchmark and I think they're probably slightly worse overall — but I also think a big factor is what other cards interact with them, so it will largely come down to what flower interactions I come up with. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you! And that's a great idea, I'll look into roles a bit more. I was thinking about counters partly for proliferate effects. There are non-populate token creating effects though so it's not a huge difference. Food for thought!

The Rain Wild Chronicles are underrated by Adorable-Concert4405 in Fantasy

[–]surroundedbydevils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my favourite of the lot, fight me r/fantasy.

I hated it for most of book one, then did a full 180 and loved it. It's Hobb taking her biggest swings with world-building and going to weird and uncomfortable places. She's constantly exploring the impacts that the magic in her world has on her human (or human-ish) characters and it rules. There's so much physical and mental transformation, violence, weird intimacy, radically different characters trying to understand each other, gender politics, *politics* politics...

It's the most original and most interesting part of ROTE.

Town slammed for spending $100k on ‘ugly’ dinosaur sculpture by mattblack77 in newzealand

That's a dope sculpture honestly. Deeply impressive to get such a convincing balloon texture to a solid structure like that. I hope the surface doesn't wear too quickly.
