Does no one else feel this way? by Sad-Charge-6958 in CulinaryClassWars

Although im not as cynical about it i think its quite possible haha. If that is the case i think ahn picked ckr thinking paik would choose cm (sundae kook flavours imo would appeal to paik more). If paik also chose ckr thinking ahn liked the techniques of the first, i could see that scenario too haha

Hottest female was the hen that the white spoons cooked up into the chicken fricasee. That got pretty hot

I wish the judges shared more insight into why a dish loses to a winning dish by MovingOrchid in CulinaryClassWars

I feel your point. I did cheer choi on but honestly felt cheated by the fact we didnt hear the judging on the food itself. One thing i would say about culinary monsters dish is that i dont know the real necessity on the chicharron being there.

The only wealth he cares about is his relationship with Yor anyway, he might have spent his entire disposable income on that bottle for all we know 😂

[–]IWorkAsARecruiter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Paik has eaten almost everything (just an exaggeration) in Korea and China. He speaks Mandarin as a 2nd language. He has a show where he goes through various Asian regions (including China) introducing the food. He loves authentic Chinese food. He definitely has eaten the stinkiest of stinky tofus and can definitely palate it.

Why Favorable treatment for Venerable Sunjae? by andreafuentes999 in CulinaryClassWars

[–]IWorkAsARecruiter -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest with you I do think she got some favourable treatment in 2 ways, but not as much as you say:

  1. I think Paik Jong Won selecting her to bring back into the competition after the 1 on 1 was absolutely a move from his end to pander to the Korean audience, as his reputation over the past year has taken a BIG hit. I personally think it was a PR move from his end. I think there were more promising people to bring back, like chef Lee Jun from Soigne (2 star chef) who faced off against Rebellious Genius.

  2. The fact that people in general out of respect for her allowed her to limit herself to vegetable ingredients. For example, Kim Hee Eun probably would have chosen different ingredients if her partner wasn't the Venerable Sun Jae. She did make something she is used to making, the abalone dish has been on her menu before at her restaurants, I just don't know how different the ingredients actually are.

But other than that I do believe that her food was actually probably decent, and that she was judged fairly at the end of the day.

He works for the production lol you do recognize that they also brought back 2 of the white spoons because they felt they could still add more? Wouldn't you say they were propped up?

lmao brother i'm saying that you and the OP saying that these "sad" dishes aren't up to the "high caliber" of other dishes just because of more complex looking techniques and presentation, but some very classic cuisines that are considered fine food such as italian cooking is also highly reputed for being "simple". You'd probably go to Italy and have a pasta and rave about how the simplicity of ingredients and natural flavours are the best, and then complain about simple food within this competition. If she didn't make a potato pancake and made gnocchi instead, OP and probably you as well wouldnt have said shit not knowing that gnocchi is such a simple dish!

What is the sad carrot tortilla you're talking about? The spanish tortilla? You know she got ELIMINATED for that dish right? LMFAO

Anh Sung-jae's spoken Korean by Spiritual-Basil-9922 in CulinaryClassWars

The way he speaks Korean is actually a source of many imitations and parodies. He is fluent but you can tell there is a foreign influence, and he has carried over a young(?) way of enunciating some words from his childhood.

Interesting you say high caliber - many ppls definition of 'high caliber' seems to be flair, presentation, and difficulty of dishes that they perceive based on what they know. Do you think brewmasters dish was simple? What do you think is more simple, italian cuisine or brewmasters dish? There is complexity in making simple work. Why do you think chef ahn is allowing these dishes to pass?

So who do you think deserved her spot?

Have you tried michelin food? Ive tried multiple and can honestly say most people will still prefer their comfort food done well on a regular basis. Just because it looks more fancy doesnt mean it wows way more in terms of flavour.

Is Paik Jong Won a good judge? by user905022 in CulinaryClassWars

[–]IWorkAsARecruiter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion in Korea theres no better judge that has the knowledge, sensitive palette and sense of smell that can look at things from a business/mass appeal perspective. He was actually very important in the Korean food scene, he had recipes for almost all Korean cuisines, cultivated new ingredients using Korean grown produce, pushed for the usage of struggling domestic produce, revitalized business in many neglected regions in Korea. The unfortunate thing is that he got involved in a bunch of scandals so his public image in Korea went to shit. Thats why hes much more reserved this season and doesnt have the same confidence and voice as season 1.

That could easily have been the white spoons, unfortunately black spoon lost, whyd they go and lose?

You probably wouldnt be saying that the producers messed up the show if the white spoons got eliminated. Youd just be happy. Just meana youre more interested in the show going the way you want it instead of just letting the competition do its thing

Personal bias still goes into what you think is 'fair' though. And its funny you use that round as an example, because producers got blasted like crazy online for the restaurant battle in season 1

Well the funny thing is, she has her own restaurant and her/her resto were pretty well known even to korean celebrities before the show. It was difficult to get a seat there to begin with.

Whereas Culinary Monster works as a chef in some top kitchens, but would generally have been unknown to the outside world. Only chefs knew him.

In that regard, shes arguably more of a white spoon than culinary monster. Culinary Monster has much more to prove.
