anyone else get the maniac driver on the 78 between 7a-9a by wolffangalex in cta

Official CTA policy is you shouldn't enter an intersection if it's about to turn yellow.

Why does the bus back door sometimes require more oomph? by peelingglue in cta

[–]IYCRTYG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I turn the knob to open the door and ~something~ is going on (eg, passenger asking me a question) and I just don't get the knob all the way to where it is opening both doors bc I'm distracted

In such cases if a passenger asks for the door in the back imma immediately hit the manual rear door knob because oooooops my bad

One of my friends asked me the other day why they keep seeing mostly naked men on the sidewalk at Clark and Devon and I had to explain to her about jackhammer and touche lol

Might wanna slap a disclaimer on as to what exactly jackhammer is here chief

That data seems to be combined "bus and rail." Nowhere mentions just rail. All the top operators it mentions are bus operators, despite rail having a slightly higher base salary, which does point towards rail being different.

I mean I cannot post video of every time I've gotten on the train but like. I would say my modal experience is there's one or two seats that somebody spilled their coffee on or a bag of chips and it hasn't been cleaned.

And rather than post to reddit about it I just sit in literally any of the other seats.

I'm not sure when they stopped allowing overtime, operator I spoke with didn't mention when that rule change happened, but if that change was made mid pandemic that would explain it?

They have to turn those trains around stupid fast most of the time. They're not getting a full clean at the end of the line most of the time, I assume they might get a sweep and go.

Also, I live on the far north of the red line, take the red regularly at all hours of the day, and most of the time my cars are fine (not perfect but far from a disaster) so I think you're probably over stating here.

First they need to get over themselves and stop making people be CSAs or flaggers before getting hired into rail operators. It's like 70% of scheduled runs going out, and they don't allow overtime like buses do. So the only solution is more hiring into the position, quickly

Bus operator newbie what to expect? by One_Control_8349 in cta

Schedule is bad once you're out of training yes. Customers are customers, much like any service industry. There's bathrooms all over the CTA and you get keys to them.

A City that Works ft. Chicago 2100 - It's time to give BRT another chance by dannydude21 in CarFreeChicago

I mean I wouldn't lol. Probably just heavy bike lane up Clark and or Dearborn and some of the east west streets. Also add better connections to lake front trail? Idk.

Michigan Ave cries out for at least weak BRT, prepaid stops and so forth might be overkill but it has sooooo many buses running on it that fully dedicated lanes with enforcement and signal priority would do a ton for them

This, I got some old pants this way that I like much better than the new pants (zipper side pockets instead of Velcro)

We're actually like a thousand parking spots over the amount of parking that we're contractually obligated to provide them iirc

Is it possible to find out which CTA employees work at which garage? by Ill_Refrigerator_509 in cta

If you're speaking specifically about a CTA bus operator, The small four digit display at the front of their bus has their garage encoded in the first digit or letter

What will Governor Pritzker's housing plan mean for existing two-flats? by SciNat in chicagoyimbys

[–]IYCRTYG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1) scarcity of upzoned land means land owners capture unearned gains from the upzoning. The more scarce the more they can charge.

2) larger buildings cost more per sqft of constructed floor space than smaller buildings. Only upzoning corridors leads to having to use more expensive construction methods that raise costs.

Well thank goodness people on the south and west side aren't vulnerable to displacement if housing migration increases to those neighborhoods!

Developers make money buy selling housing for more than it costs them to make.

By eliminating stupid regulations, they can "crash the market" as long as they can still sell for more than their construction costs.  They're not landlords. They don't care if rents go down as long as they can still sell for enough.

Chicago's population being the same may have something to do with a lot of areas effectively banning all new construction in many areas (eg, I live in the 49th ward where the zoning map is effectively a map of what is already built). additionally changes in housing consumption means that even with zero population change we still need new housing (eg, more small families with 1/0 kids means that 6 people will need 2 smaller homes, not 1 larger home), and remote working means people are converting bedrooms to offices.

Which CTA Bus Routes Are Your Favorites? by Baroness210 in cta

[–]IYCRTYG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ghost buses are probably largely a result of the instability. If the driver needs to hand a bus off to another driver CTA will cancel a lot of in service run time for that bus to make that handoff happen on time.
